VLSI Sketchbook

w Everyone should try a sketchbook!

n It should be at least 5x8” n It should be plain, unlined paper n Ideally it should be “nice” drawing/sketching paper n It doesn’t have to cost very much

w Also colored pencils

n These don’t need to be fancy, but you’ll need at least

a few colors

VLSI Sketchbook

w Try using this sketchbook to jot down and keep track of ideas during the term

n Yes - you will have to draw! n No - you will not be graded on the quality of the

drawing!

w I’ll suggest sketchbook assignments that go with the lab assignments

n But, you should use the sketchbook for all your VLSI

design ideas, not just the assignments

l Ideally you will take it with you all the time

VLSI Sketchbook

w What types of things go in a sketchbook?

n Sketches! n That means ideas, thoughts, things you see that

you find interesting, things you see that remind you of engineering issues, random patterns, etc.

n Some of my suggestions will seem unrelated l i.e. to look at artists’ work that is “chip-like” and draw

some examples of similar images

n These are designed to get you thinking, and to

loosen up your drawing/sketching skills

Successful Sketchbooks

w Visual diaries

n They should store personal responses including

thoughts, ideas, and experiences

w Personal and unique

n A collection of knowledge, thoughts,

inspirations, that no one else has

w Near at all times

n so ideas can be jotted down and drawings made

whenever the situation allows

From a book on art education – I’ll cite it as soon as I find it again…

Successful Sketchbooks

w Explore a variety of media

n visual notes with written comments, drawings,

work from direct observation and secondary sources

w Be inventive and experimental with media

n Try out things you haven’t used before

w Sketchbooks do not have to be neat or perfect

n But they need to be legible and interesting to

look at
