Research Question:
The objective of this study is to investigate workout preferences University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) students. Because all UNL students have access to the campus rec center, users of the rec center facility are the population for this
- experiment. The research questions present in this experiment are as follows:
1) Which gender uses the rec center more frequently? 2) What prominent purpose does the rec center user have for working out? 3) What proportion of college-age students are using pre-workout/exercise supplements? 4) Do rec center users prefer to workout individually or in a group?
Data Collection Explanation:
- We conducted our survey on Facebook pages for classes of 2015 and 2017 with 100 UNL students
as our sample size.
- Our questions are categorical variables
- Survey administered had following questions:
- 1. What is your gender?
Male Female
- 2. How often do you use the rec center each week?
0-1 times/week 2-3 times/week 4-5 times/week more than 6 times/week
- 3. Are you using the rec center facilities for:
Training for an event (marathon, competition) Personal well-being (weight loss, muscle gain)
- 4. Do you use pre-workout supplements or exercise supplements regularly?
Yes No
- 5. During your workout, do you usually workout individually or with a partner/group?
Individually Partner/Group
Data Summary & Analysis: Gender
- 1. What is your gender?
Female- 66% Male- 34% ***Notice: Females participated notably more than males results may be more representative of female population
- Because we were unable to cross reference multiple questions based on
individual responses, we are unable to determine which gender works out more frequently
- If study were to be redone, we would have used a survey method that
allows viewing of individual surveys as opposed to only cumulative results
Data Summary & Analysis: Workout Frequency
- 2. How often do you use the rec center each week?
0-1 times/week: 31.31% 2-3 times/week: 25.25% 4-5 times/week: 31.31% more than 6 times/week: 12.12%
- Even spread for workout frequency among
students - Inability to cross reference workout frequency with gender gives inconclusive results pertaining to which gender works out more frequently
- Workout recommendations for the general
populations include working out at least four times each week meaning 43.43% of rec center users are reaching recommended workout standards
Data Summary & Analysis: Workout Purpose
- 3. Are you using the rec center facilities for:
Training for event: 8.08% Personal Well Being: 91.92%
Implications: The rec center classes/groups for strength competitions, 5K, 10K, and marathon training are most likely not going to be as successful or pertain to as many students as their personal well-being programming events such as ‘Weight Room Exposure’ or ‘Healthy Eating’ Most students are working out to maintain optimum health, not to compete
Data Summary & Analysis: Workout Supplementation
- 4. Do you use pre-workout supplements or exercise supplements regularly?
Yes: 16.84% No: 83.16%
A surprisingly high amount of the sample reports using workout supplements regularly → DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health Education Act) Results suggest that the rec center may financially benefit from providing pre/post-workout supplements and students would benefit from health supplement education available from the rec center
Data Summary & Analysis: Workout Company
- 5. During your workout do you usually workout individually or with a partner/group?
Individual: 66% Group/Partner: 34%
The majority of students workout individually Implications: When allotting funds for the new rec center renovations, it should be kept in mind that although the group fitness classes and intramural sporting activities are beneficial to a small group of students, most rec center users are at the gym for individual workouts - so higher investments in resistance training equipment, cardio machines, and circuits are beneficial to more students
Conclusion:
- We’re a lovely fit campus with lots of active
women who participate in surveys :)
- Most students are working out for personal
well-being
- 16% of students use workout
supplementations regularly
- 66% of students prefer to work out alone
