Where is this viable? Already in use?

What are the reasons for considering this?

  • Clean/Green
  • Reliable/Predictable
  • Effective at low

speeds

  • Renewable
  • Long lifespan
  • Reduces foreign

importation of fuel

  • Low cost to run
  • Coastal protection
  • Less use of electricity
  • High potential

What are the environmental costs/concerns?

Large negative impact on marine ecosystems

  • Early research indicates tidal stream turbines do much less damage.
  • By building a dam, changing tidal flows, aquatic and shoreline ecosystems are compromised.
  • Sound of machinery(generator) under the ocean, effects lot of sea life on their health, habitat and source of

food because most of the marine species rely on earth’s magnetic fields

  • Many ecosystems along the land/ocean margins are compromised every year

What are the economic costs/concerns?

So tidal energy costs above 20 cents USD per KWH (kilowatt-hour). Tidal power is expensive because technology required to convert tidal energy into electricity is very similar to the technology used in traditional hydroelectric power plants. The first requirement is a dam or “barrage” across a tidal bay or estuary. Building dams is an expensive process. Main concern of tidal energy is the potential of generating electricity from marine tidal currents is enormous. Tidal energy is a renewable source that has an additional value in a future energy market with regard to other renewable energy sources.

What are your conclusions about the prospects

  • f this source of energy?

Useful source as it is renewable of electricity
