Problem x Solution

Identifying the problem of the lack of awareness for the Ecological Footprint, we utilized Vancouver’s transportation system to our

  • advantage. By doing this, there is an opportunity to

bring awareness to the citizens of Vancouver.

The Challenge

As the project progressed, the team approached the two step process. The first step is to get the audience to approach the offline

  • material. The next step is to guide them from

the offline medium to the online website.

Offline Approach

The solution to the two step process challenge was to introduce the limited edition Compass

  • cards. These cards will not only promote public

transportation, but also provide the incentive for the audience to visit the online website.

Design Process

The interactive website focuses on displaying information about the Ecological footprint. By utilizing wireframes to structure the website, this provides good information architecture, as it conveys content effectively and clearly. This allows the audience to access the website with ease.

Online Website

To ensure that the audience can circulate through the website, the navigation is located at the top of the site. This navigation tab will guide visitors through the different ecological footprint categories on the website.

Legibility

Given that the pie charts are difficult to read visually, the team reorganized the data into gauges. This decision, created a simple and legible data about the Ecological Footprint.

Effectiveness

To ensure consistence between the online and offline approaches, there is a contest page that allows the audience to enter a special code, which can be found on the sticker attached on the back of the compass

  • card. The team believes that the design is

effective as it connects both online and

  • ffline approaches, creating the incentive to

go on the website.

For the implementation of the limited edition compass cards there will be a partnership with Trans Link. The cards will be accessible through translinks card machines or at customer service desks. Not only will the partnership promote the EF card design, but it will also encourage citizens to take public transit.

Implementation

In the future, there can be a possibility for the creation of personal accounts for individuals to track their Ecological Footprint through the use of the compass card. Furthermore, with the flexible aspect of the compass card design, this allows the team to spread awareness on the Ecological Footprint with different designs.
