Defining Cultural Competence Our Definitions

Barriers we as Hospice Care Professionals Face 1. Lack of diversity in healthcare’s leadership and workforce 2. Systems of Care poorly designed to meet the needs of diverse populations 3. Poor Communication between providers and patients of differerent racial, ethnic, or cultural backgrounds

 We need to learn terms and language that is not insulting to other cultures  Ask questions about cultural norms with the effort to learn people that live differently  Communicate ideas and differences  Every Culture has a Strong Skill set to bring to Team Change Language

 Cross Cultural Engagement: To actively pursue activities that are the cultural norm for another ethnic group.  Create Activities that other team members participate in activities that are not their cultural norms:  More African Americans on golf course more Executives on Basketball Court Change Locations

 Boundaries are good but with careful trepidation they can be crossed  Diversify your Life Portfolio  Meet Individuals where they are  Create Strong Recreational Programs (game days)  Encourage off site integrated events Challenge Norms

 Team Captains  Company Events  Equal Pay for Staff  Leadership that reflects the Diversity of Community they serve Interventions
