About the Southern Alberta FISHES Program

  • The FISHES Program is a multi-million dollar program developed after the

2013 flood event, to provide mitigation for emergency works that were exempt from considering environmental impacts.

  • A science-based approach was developed and used to determine where

best to complete habitat restoration projects at flood impacted sites.

  • Resulting habitat restoration projects were designed and constructed to:

– Mitigate flood-related impacts – Speed the restoration of degraded habitat following the 2013 and 2014 floods – Enhance fish habitat to improve resiliency to future high flow events

“Overview Summary” literature and relevant/known database review to support decision- making “Preliminary Assessment” HD Videography during helicopter flights – collect watershed data and score using ESRM Data analysis using the Evaluation Scoring and Ranking Model (ESRM) Prioritization of reaches and habitat units; provides limiting factors in system “Detailed Field Surveys” to collect required biotic/abiotic habitat data and score using ESRM Design Stage Consultant lead Conceptual, Preliminary and Final Designs; Environmental Permitting Construction of Projects Tendering, Contractor Hire and Construction Monitoring and Evaluation

Habitat Issues Common Among Projects

  • Bank Instability – Flood and Anthropogenic Disturbances
  • Riparian Disturbances

– Trails and roads – Campsites and other clearings

  • Crossings

– OHV crossings – Cattle and wildlife crossings

  • Instream Disturbances

– Channel migration – Excessive gravel deposits – Anthropogenic debris – OHV travel instream
