  2. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 The New Curriculum Maths • The new curriculum has been statutory for all year groups, except Y2 and Y6 since September 2014. • It goes further than the old curriculum - some aspects that were once in the secondary school domain have now moved down to primary schools. • Children are now expected to master certain skills earlier than they have done before - many goalposts have moved. • The programme of study is now set out in a year by year basis. Each year group working from an agreed set of Age Related Expectations (ARE). 2

  3. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 The New Curriculum The main changes for Maths • Huge overarching emphasis on NUMBER FLUENCY and the ABILITY TO REASON. • 5 yr olds now expected to learn to count up to 100 (compared to 20 in old curriculum) and learn number bonds to 20 (was 10). • Simple fractions will now be taught from KS1 and by the end of KS2 children are expected to be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions e.g. 0.375 = 3/8. • By 9, children are expected to KNOW times tables up to 12 x 12 (was up to 10 x 10 by the end of KS2) • To encourage greater use of mental arithmetic and develop number fluency, calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2. • More emphasis on calculating and problem solving with fractions and decimals and less on data handling (now statistics). 3

  4. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 The New Curriculum The main implications for Maths • We are very much in a transition period - having to meet the demands on the new curriculum, whilst also trying to plug any gaps. • The pitch of lessons has increased. • Children currently in Y5, will be assessed at the end of KS2 against the new curriculum having only been taught it from this year. • We really need your help to develop number fluency. There's so much that can be done at home to help your child to become more number fluent. 4

  5. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 Fluency Not all about memorising rigid rules and procedures. Fluidity and flexibility with numbers. An ability to manipulate numbers. Number sense. Confidence. Know why they are doing what they are doing and when it is appropriate to use different methods. 5

  6. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 Progression from year 1 to year 6 Example 1 -Number Year 1 - Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards beginning from 0 or 1, or from any given number. Year 2 - Compare and order numbers from 0 to 100; use <, > and = signs. Year 3 - Compare and order numbers up to 1000. Year 4 - Find 1000 more or less than a given number. Year 5 - Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. Year 6 - Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. 6

  7. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 Example 2 - Multiplication Tables (x) Year 1 - Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. Year 2 - Count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward or backwards. - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers. Year 3 - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8 x tables. - Use mental and progress to formal written methods for multiplication and division using known multiplication tables (including for 2 digit x 1 digit). Year 4 - Multiply numbers by 10 and 100. Understand tenths and hundredths. -Use mental recall of multiplication facts, including all tables up to 12 x 12 and quickly derive corresponding division facts. Year 5 - Multiply and divide mentally using known and derived facts e.g. 2.3 x 4 = 9.2 - Multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. Year 6 - Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. Give answers to three decimal places. 7

  8. Curriculum Evening Maths slides.notebook March 12, 2015 How can you support Maths learning at home? • Number fluency and number sense • Importance of dialogue • Games 8
