  4. When did it all start? • The Botanical Research Institute was founded in 1903 at the foot of the hill on which the Union Building was completed in 1935 in Pretoria as part of Agricultural Services • The first publications were reports on the ecology of South Africa • Bothalia 1921, FPA 1923 • In 1973 BRI moved to the Pretoria NBG

  5. Transformation of Bothalia to African Biodiversity & Conservation The communication from the CEO went out on 23 May 2011. 25 August 2011 the Journal Working Group of SANBI makes the decision that the new journal will be made available via free open access. The final issues of Bothalia will appear in May and October 2012. A decision was also made that a call for expression of interest for an external publisher will be advertised. The final decision on whether it will be implemented will rest with the Journal Working Group and will depend on the available funds. The journal will not lose its ISI rating.

  6. Transformation of Bothalia to African Biodiversity & Conservation continued The communication from the CEO went out to thank the current Editorial board and an invitation to nominate a new Board was sent out to SANBI Scientists. On 15 May 2012 Expressions of interest were received from two South African companies to publish African Biodiversity and Conservation. The first issue of the new journal will appear in May 2013. The evaluation process to appoint a external publisher of African Biodiversity and Conservation will take place soon.
