South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) An entity of the Department of Environmental Affairs Leads and coordinates research, and monitors and reports on the state of biodiversity in South Africa Provides knowledge and information, gives planning and policy advice and pilots best- practice management models in partnership with stakeholders
• The SANBI is mandated to monitor and report on the status of biodiversity in South Africa. • SANBI meets part of this mandate through the NBA - which reports on the status and trends of biodiversity and ecosystems on a 5-7 year cycle. • The NBA focusses on high-level indicators such as threat status and protection level for species and ecosystems
