  3. VIKING TRACK AND FIELD PHILOSOPHY – INDIVIDUAL GOALS Develop respect and enjoyment for the sport of track and 1. field. Win when you should, lose like a champion, and beat 2. opponents more skilled than you by believing in yourself. Exert great effort in a winning or losing result. 3. Develop self-esteem by experiencing hard work, dedication 4. and commitment. Develop a strong body, sound mind and strong work ethic. 5.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION Must be completed before the first day of  practice  Current Sports Physical (since June 1, 2019) Must be completed before first competition  (Feb. 14 th )  Sports participation fee of $140.00.  IHSA drug testing waiver (if participated in a previous sport this school year, it is done) Online registration – Must register even if your  son has been in another sport.

  5. Fund Raiser!!  https://wefund4u.com/single- fundraiser/?fundraiser_id=136999 We raised over $14,000 in 2019!! Net profit of $10,500. Louisville trip = $6,000 – Transportation alone was $3,200 Louisville trip is a two year fund raiser-set aside $3,000 each year Sweats for entire team = $3,300. Team Bowling = $350.00 Food for Lock In = $150.00 Various equipment needs – Poles for vaulting, throwing implements, replacement hurdles, tents, extra uniforms (state, throwbacks), competition sweats. Team Dinner before outdoor conference

  6. IMPORTANT DATES  1. Week of February 10 th – Fundraiser begins  2. February 19 th – Fundraiser kickoff  3. Sometime in mid March – Picture day  4. March 30 th – April 3 rd – Spring Break  No “formal” practices, no meets  Coaches will hold informal practices for those who are in town. No penalties for missing if not in town.  April 18 th – VanDeveer Relays. Senior recognition  All team members must be present.

  8. COMMUNICATION!! Athlete has a problem or question: Discuss it with the event coach Problem still not resolved: Call me or have a meeting arranged. Problem still not resolved: We will meet with the athletic director and/or principal. Email: Please use only as informative. Any problems please see or call me personally. Believe it or not, what is perceived by a teenager sometimes may not be quite what is reality! 

THE NITTY-GRITTY THE TEAM The program  Coached as one team  All grade levels practice with each other within the particular event  Event groups   Distance: 800 meter and above (800 m, 1600 m, 3200 m, 4x800 relay)  Sprints: 400 meter and below (100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 4x100m, 4x200, 4x400)  Hurdlers (110 m highs, 300 m lows)  High Jumpers  Long and Triple Jumpers  Pole Vault  Throwers (shot put and discus) The teams  Compete on basically two levels   Varsity (all duals/triangulars and all major invitationals)  Frosh/Soph (all duals/triangulars, a couple of major invitationals)  Two freshman only meets

THE NITTY-GRITTY THE TEAM How varsity is determined  Obviously by class (Juniors and Seniors)  Top two compete in major invitationals  Determined by competition, top times or distances on the team compete.  Not based upon class  Relays based upon combination  Top times (in open events)  Best handoffs  Number of event considerations

  12. THE NITTY-GRITTY DUAL / TRIANGULARS MEETS  WHEN: Once a week; Tuesdays during the outdoor season, varies during the indoor season. Begins at 4:45 pm, completes approx. 7:00 pm  WHO: The entire team. The competition is run on two levels at the same time. Fr/soph and varsity. All team members compete.

  13. THE NITTY-GRITTY Major Invitationals  When:  Outdoor: Every Thursday or Friday or Saturday  Indoor: Fridays or Saturdays, one Thursday and one Monday  Who:  Top two individuals in each event, one relay per distance  Will have a few invitationals where a few fr/soph events are run

THE NITTY-GRITTY INJURIES  Report all injuries, small or large to a coach.  See our trainer before a doctor  If a doctor is needed, make an appointment with a sports med if possible.  Apply ice to any sore muscle as soon as possible after practice.  A trainer is available at all meets and most practices
