day

Fir irst la language not Engli lish
- Bilingualism should be celebrated.
- Parents should speak their mother tongue at home.
- If children know their first language well it will help them learn
English.
- It is normal for children to ‘jumble’ words from different
languages.
- There is no evidence that bilingualism will make it harder for
children to develop speech.
They don’t seem to hear or find it difficult to listen for their age They can’t follow instructions They don’t answer questions or when they do, give the wrong answers They don’t look at you properly when talking They struggle to talk and listen with other children They don’t have as many words as other children of their age They sound muddled when they’re difficult and difficult to follow Their speech is unclear – “a tup of toffee” (a cup of coffee) They struggle to get their words out – it sounds like a stammer
