  • 6 year olds can have a vocabulary of 14,000 words which helps them

  • Bilingualism should be celebrated.
  • Parents should speak their mother tongue at home.
  • If children know their first language well it will help them learn

English.

  • It is normal for children to ‘jumble’ words from different

languages.

  • There is no evidence that bilingualism will make it harder for

children to develop speech.

They don’t seem to hear or find it difficult to listen for their age They can’t follow instructions They don’t answer questions or when they do, give the wrong answers They don’t look at you properly when talking They struggle to talk and listen with other children They don’t have as many words as other children of their age They sound muddled when they’re difficult and difficult to follow Their speech is unclear – “a tup of toffee” (a cup of coffee) They struggle to get their words out – it sounds like a stammer
