Day 1 objectives By the end of today you will be able to:  Define why colleges exist and what environment they operate within.  Define why a students’ association exists and your role within it.  Explain your role as a Board Member.  Explain the regionalisation agenda to your fellow students. You will also have:  Met the sector agencies and understood how they can support you.

  3. What is a college?

  4. Learning Objectives By the end of this session you will be able to:  Identify your college’s stakeholders and their interests.  Explain what environment your college operates within.  Explain how colleges communicate what they do.  Explain how colleges work internally.

  5. Stakeholders  A stakeholder is: ‘A person, group or organisation with an interest or concern in something’  Who do you think a college’s stakeholders are?  What do you think are their interests?

  6. PESTLE PESTLE is an environmental analysis tool and stands for:  Political.  Economic.  Social.  Technological.  Legal.  Environmental.

  7. Vision, mission and values Vision: a long term, idealistic, goal for an organisation. Oxfam’s vision is a just world without poverty. We envision a world in which people can influence decisions which affect their lives, enjoy their rights, and assume their responsibilities as full citizens of a world in which all human beings are valued and treated equally.

  8. Vision, mission and values Mission: a medium term (3-5 years), achievable goal for an organisation. Amnesty's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination--in the context of our work to promote all human rights, as articulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

NUS Scotland/sparqs regionalisation project  Each group of colleges who are going through the regionalisation process will have one consultant supporting them.  Their role is to: → Support students on the partnerships boards. → Facilitate students creating a vision for learning and teaching for the new college. → Support the development of a merged students’ association.

NUS Scotland/sparqs regionalisation project  Training available: → Supporting College Student Governors Summer Course (Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th of June). → Supporting College Student Governors Autumn Course (Thursday the 18th to Saturday the 20th of October).  Two conferences will be held over the next two years to share practice.  A collection of resources to be created for use by colleges and associations going through the regionalisation process.

  29. Gathering student opinion  Hands up before/after class.  Surveys.  Emails.  Post it notes in tutorials.  Face to face chats.  Comment boxes.  Online spaces:  Course reps. → Facebook. → Twitter. → Virtual Learning Environments.
