WHAT IS NC GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL? ➔ 2 campuses - Salem College & ➔ 5 ½ week summer Meredith College residential program for ➔ Bridges high school to college intellectually gifted high ➔ Studies nominated area school students in-depth and other areas such ➔ Integrates academic as philosophy, ethics, etc. disciplines, the arts, and ➔ Concerts, electives, seminars, unique courses exhibitions, field trips, dances, ➔ Does not involve credit, sports, etc. tests, or grades - just learning!! 2

TIMELINE ➢ Sept. 13 - Parent Information Meeting at Waddell Language Academy - 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. ➢ Oct. 23 - Completed applications dropped off to Advanced Studies Department at Atrium Ed Center ➢ Oct. 29 - Nov. 5 - Applications scored by CMS Specialists ➢ Nov. 13 - CMS Nominees selected and mailed to NC Governor’s School; students notified via School Counselor ➢ Feb. 2019 - Auditions for eligible Dance, Theater, Choral Music and Instrumental Music ➢ March 2019 - Nominees notified of selection and payment 3 due; Governor’s School Foundation Scholarship award recipients notified

WHO CAN APPLY? ◈ Achievement test score ◈ Legal NC resident of 92% - 99% - full ◈ Attending NC Public or composite, area non-public school composite or EOC in ◈ Juniors (or the test associated with Sophomores in Choral their content area Music, Instrumental ◈ $500 tuition - Music & Dance ONLY) scholarships available ◈ Top 35% of class (CMS only - unweighted GPA) 5

  7. COUNSELOR’S ROLE Guidance and completion of the entire application. Please refer to the Governor’s School Application Packet (www.ncgovschool.org) for all required materials, as well as the order in which you submit the pages of the application. The packet will be posted to their website in early September!! All materials - including Teacher Recommendations - MUST BE TYPED!! Governor’s School will NOT accept hand-written forms. 7

PROCESS STEP 2: Based on interest & STEP 1: Distribute parent qualifying class rank, meeting information and support students with all gauge student interest in components of application attending the program. MY STUDENT(S) GOT ACCEPTED, NOW WHAT? ● Students will be notified in March 2019 if they have been accepted into NC Governor’s School ● Student will complete online registration (Google Form) and submit payment (online with credit card or check/money order) of $500 ● Students needing a scholarship can apply through the Governor’s School Foundation (www.ncgsfoundation.org) - watch for their deadlines, which are separate from CMS deadlines!!! 9

TIPS TO HELP YOUR STUDENTS ● One of the recommendations MUST be from the area in which the student is nominated (example: Science → AP Biology Teacher) ● Make sure students think deeply about the essay prompts and address ALL parts of the question in their response - be original! Use your voice! ● Teacher comments are important to the selection of students - so be specific! Encourage them to say more about the student. ● Make sure that all portions of the application are TYPED!! (Handwritten Teacher Recommendations will NOT be accepted!!) ● When listing activities, please be sure student includes any leadership or prestigious roles within that activity. (examples: Captain of Debate Team, Founder of school Recycling Club, etc.) ● It is best to bullet point activities and awards when listing them. It makes 10 for easier readability.
