How will Work Experience help me in the future?

  • Clearer idea of what type of job or career you would like to

have in the future – try the job to see if you like it

  • Find out what it is like having to go to work everyday rather

than school

  • Develop employability skills such as team-working, time-

keeping, problem solving and communication skills

  • Use your initiative and face new challenges
  • Help you to get a job later on when you have left school or

possibly a part time job while you are still at school if you impress your boss

  • It should also help you with applications in the future such

as University or Apprenticeship applications

How do I organise my placement?

  • What type of placement e.g. office, outdoors, ICT based,

creative, practical, working in a team

  • Think about possible future career plans or your GCSE

subject choices or interests and skills you can already offer in Year 11

  • You have to organise your own placement – visit them in

person, write to them, possibly attend an interview

  • Search the Internet using websites such as Total Jobs to find

ideas of different jobs and names of companies or businesses

  • r

walk around Harrogate for ideas and addresses

  • Speak to family, friends, teachers to see if they have any

contacts or helpful suggestions

Hints and tips to make you stand out!

  • Sell yourself! Tell the company about yourself and state clearly why you

are interested in the placement you have chosen

  • Think about what you would like to achieve whilst you are on placement

and why do you think you will benefit from working with them

  • Think about what skills you have to offer – remember qualities such as

good timekeeping, confidence, enjoying new challenges and the ability to use your initiative are just as important as good maths or I.T. skills and

  • ther qualifications
  • Draw on every bit of experience you have – things like babysitting,

Saturday jobs, responsibilities or participation in activities both in and

  • utside of school such as sports or music etc can provide valuable

experience that can be transferred to the workplace

Health and Safety Checks

  • All student placements must be passed by NYBEP (North Yorkshire

Business and Enterprise Partnership) for health and safety checks. We cannot approve your work experience unless this is completed.

  • £32 cost to be paid per student to cover the Health and Safety checks.

Must pay this at the same time as returning the Student Work Experience Placement Form by the Friday 17th January 2020 deadline

  • You must make the online payment and return required paperwork by

Friday 17th January 2020 to be included in the school programme

  • NYBEP cannot pass placements outside the NYBEP area (£30 - £60

charge for out of area). Look for placements in North Yorkshire e.g. Harrogate or York as they are usually okay

  • NYBEP and school will require you, your parents and your employer to

sign a number of very important forms before you are allowed to go on placement so you must make sure that your placement is organised by deadlines set

  • Complete a NYBEP Record Book during your placement
  • Your employer will receive a phone call from a member
  • f staff from HGS to see how you are getting on
  • After work experience you hand in your completed

NYBEP Record Book and Daily Diary for assessment. You will then be awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze certificate to reflect your progress during work experience. This certificate will be very useful in the future – evidence for applying for jobs, college/apprenticeship/university applications
