  1. Work Experience Briefing 23 rd May 2016 to 27 th May 2016

  2. PAPERWORK In your work experience pack there is a student/parent agreement form a job description and a work experience diary.

  3. Student/parent agreement form • This is a legal document. It is important. • The top box must be signed by you • The bottom box must be signed by your parent/carer • Your parent/carer must also complete the bottom box with the medical information by deleting (a) or (b).More details about this are in the accompanying letter • Return in person to Mrs Cooper in the work experience office before the deadline. • Do not hand in to anyone else

  4. Job description • Different students will have different information depending on their placement. • The whole document must be read with your parent/carer • You need to keep this document. Next year you can file it in your Record of Achievement folder as evidence of your placement. • Any queries please see Mrs Cooper

  5. Preparation • Now you have your paperwork it is vital that you contact your placement quickly. • Thank them for offering you a placement • Check the dress code that you need to follow. School uniform will probably be replaced by practical dress, smart, or smart casual dress DEPENDING upon the type of work. • Check the times you will be expected to work • Check meal time provision. You may need to take take your lunch if there is nowhere nearby • Ask any other questions you may have

  6. TRAVEL • Make sure you know how to get to your placement • Do it in advance! Don’t start looking up bus/train timetables on the morning you are going • Where possible make a practice journey beforehand if it needs one • Punctuality is important

  7. Protective clothing • Some placements may require you to have protective equipment such as goggles, safety boots etc • It is always preferable to have your own but school does have a limited amount of second hand equipment to borrow • If you need any please get in touch with us as soon as possible

  8. Absence • It is not only essential to let your placement and school know if you are unable to attend but good manners • Your placement should not have to be contacting school to find out where you are. • Please contact both early in the morning • Make sure you have the name and number for your placement (on the front of your sheet) • Make sure you also have Mr Pickles school mobile number. This is 07889 809022

  9. Mobile phone etiquette Mobile phones in the workplace are similar to mobile phones in school. There is a correct time and place for them! Most companies do not allow their use during working time but may permit their use during breaks and lunchtimes. Please ensure that you ask what the rules are and do not use them to take photographs for your diary record without asking first.

  10. Use of any social media sites It is not appropriate to make any comments or post any photographs on social media sites , good or bad, about your work experience. It is a breach of confidentiality so please don’t do it!

  11. Emergency mobile number • Mr Pickles school emergency mobile number will be switched on from 7am until 7pm • 07889 809022 • Please make sure you have this written down • This is for absence or any concerns whilst you are out on your placement

  12. Teacher visit • During your placement you will receive a teacher visit. Some placements are not practical to visit as they may be too far away or you may be at different locations during the week. If this is the case you will have a phone call instead of a visit. • It is your responsibility to contact the teacher who is visiting you to arrange a date and a time and to let your placement know when your teacher will be visiting • In some cases it may be necessary to change the teacher visiting you, we will let you know if this happens • The list will be displayed in the exam case in A block soon. We will email your mentors when it is ready.

  13. Remember • These employers have kindly agreed to help you and they and the school will expect good standards of behaviour • Manners cost nothing! • 4000 students are on work experience in Derbyshire this month. We need these employers to help us next year too. • Show an interest • You will be tired, that is normal and school will seem a short day afterwards! • Most of all enjoy it!

  14. REMINDER • I will email this powerpoint to you so that you can check that you don’t forget to do anything! If your email is full you will not get it…..
