  2. The University of Salford We have a history • 1896: Royal Technical Institute opens • 1921: Becomes Royal Technical College • 1967: University of Salford by Royal Charter We are dynamic • Continual university-wide investment • Investment into Peel campus • New campus at media city

  3. The University of Salford • A Greater Manchester University • Very close to city centre • Best of both worlds • Peaceful campus • Close to city The main campus …

  4. The Peel Campus – Academic The chemical sciences are Chapman based at the Peel Campus (Lectures ) (shown here). Mary Main Library Seacole Labs Cockroft Labs Most of your lectures will (Teaching + be in the Peel Building. Research) Peel Building Most of your Laboratory classes will be in the Maxwell Building Cockcroft Building. (Lectures + Reception )

  5. The Peel Campus – Recreational Sports centre New There are also Students Union accommodation extensive recreational Food Food facilities on the Peel Food Campus. Peel Park (Green Space) Check out our accommodation on an online tour today! Food What about the programmes? Food 5 min to city centre!

  6. Key aspects of our courses • Research-led teaching • Independent research project • Placement opportunities • Support: personal tutors, student voice • Small-group studies, tutorials, skills modules • Friendly, approachable, accessible staff!

  7. BSc (Hons) Programmes The programmes are: • Biochemistry (with option of study in the USA). • Pharmaceutical Science. • Chemistry. • Medicinal Chemistry. All of these can be taken as: • Three year course. • Four year course - placement year between years two and three. • Six years part time (no placement option).

  8. Biochemistry and Pharm. Sci. YEAR ONE – SHARED MODULES Introduction Biochemical and Introductory Biological to Organic Genetics Cell Biology Pharmaceutical Biochemistry Chemistry Skills Chemistry YEAR TWO – COURSES BEGIN TO SPECIALISE Chemical and Clinical and Biochemical Human Genomics and Molecular Research Physiology Proteomics Genetics Skills Biochemistry Pharmaceutical Science Drug Fundamentals Medical Discovery and of Pharmacology Biochemistry Medicinal Biochemistry Chemistry

  9. Biochemistry and Pharm. Sci. YEAR THREE - FURTHER SPECIALISATION Biochemistry Research Science and of Drugs and Project Industry Disease Biochemistry Pharmaceutical Science Clinical Applied Biotechnology OR Immunology Pharmacology Cancer: Bench Advances in OR OR Cell Pathology Biotechnology to Bedside Pathophysiology Biochemistry: more focus on fundamentals on biochemical processes. Pharmaceutical science: more focus on applications of drugs to disease.

Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry YEAR THREE - FURTHER SPECIALISATION Advanced Research Science and Organic Project Industry Chemistry Chemistry Medicinal Chemistry Frontiers in Advances in Biochemistry Applied Inorganic Physical of Drugs and Pharmacology Chemistry Chemistry Disease Chemistry: fundamental wide-ranging understanding of chemical processes. Medicinal chemistry: chemistry applied to a medical setting.

  12. A Typical First Year Timetable A typical week at first year might contain: • Five lectures - two hours long each (i.e. 10 hrs total) • One (or two) laboratory class - three hours long. • One tutorial - one hour long. There are no classes before 9 am or after 6 pm. Wednesday afternoon is generally kept free of teaching. This is approximate and will vary.

  13. Placement Year Completion of year 2 Optional placement year (no need to decide now) Final Year

  14. Placement Year • Many placements are in Greater Manchester, Lancashire or Cheshire • Others are across the UK • Or in Europe

  15. Year in the USA - Biochemistry Biochemistry students have an opportunity to spend a year at the University of Toledo in the US during the 2nd year of their studies. At domestic fees!

  16. Final Year Project We have a range of interesting areas for you to work on with us. • Cancer • Drug design • Synthesis • Molecular biology • Antimicrobials • Materials • Catalysis

  17. Foundation Year Do not have the background to go directly into 1 st year? Foundation year prepares you for entry to first year. Subsequently you can enter the full degree here (or perhaps elsewhere). Biological Chemical Scientific Professional Principles Principles Methods Communication Science for Data Handling Health

  18. Integrated Masters in Chemistry • MChem is a four-year integrated Masters programme • Leads to a level 7 qualification. • Available for chemistry and medicinal chemistry. • New courses started running from September 2019. • Also a placement year between years two and three.

  19. Industry Focus and Networking Events Our programmes incorporate topics on industry awareness and networking events. Module content includes: • Intellectual property • Industry speakers • Networking (including social media) OCCA (Oil and Colour Chemists Association) Host industry events with guest speakers: Industry Event 2019 • Learn from people in industry • Create contacts for future employment • Apply networking skills

  20. Employability We talk to employers and know what they want. 1. Our degrees provide high standard knowledge. • Well designed, forward thinking. 2. Demonstrate the ability to use knowledge. • Focused + relevant projects provide real transferable skills Integrated industrial experience provide 1 st hand insight • 3. Provide the experience employers require. • Placement years • Summer projects 4. Help you develop industry connections.

  21. Our Graduates’ Careers Scientific industry • Pharma / biotech • Equipment / assay development • Management • Scientific writing • Chemicals industries Clinical career • NHS clinical / Biomed scientist • Medical degree • Physicians associate

  22. General Skills and Careers • Strong analytical skills • Their reports and presentations. • They work hard and manage their time. • Dealing with practical challenges (project work). Provides opportunities that are not directly in science • Consultancies • Education • Publishing and Journalism • Intellectual property • Sales and marketing (scientific) • Public (science) policy

  23. Further Study MSc • PhD • Medical Qualifications • at Salford, other UK universities, or abroad.

  24. Investment • New campus buildings • New student accommodation • State of the art teaching labs

  25. Mega Lab • £3 Million! • AV first of its kind WORLDWIDE. • State-of-the-art. • (probably) the newest and most advanced teaching lab in UK! • We also have fantastic research labs.
