Peyton: You have heard the main gist of what happens...so where do you come in? Before the convention you are tasked with talking to your peers and school community about the different topics and issues that they feel are important and how that affects what they look for in a candidate. During the convention, you will need to listen carefully, ask questions that are reflective of concerns that you and you school community have, and make an informed decision at the end of the day. Once the convention is over, your job is not done. You will need to continue to act as delegates to the chosen SMOB for the duration of their term; this includes assisting the SMOB in gathering feedback, asking questions, and as always, acting as a beacon of communication between the SMOB and your school community.

Responsibilities of the Student Member

perspective on the Board

  • f Education!

Ambika: The student member of the Board is an essential part of making student voice heard in Howard County. They are students, just like you, who are walking and living through some of the common challenges that all students face. Their responsibility is to voice the concerns of the student body on the material brought to the Board of Education. An effective student member will understand their limited voting rights, and the function of the board of education as a whole. In addition, they will constantly seek out to hear more about what the students what, and what they feel needs to be changed.

Ambika: It is important that the candidates running to become the student member know their voting limitations. In addition, there schedule should allow for enough time to concentrate and prioritize being the Student Member. They should understand their responsibilities on the Board of Education, and know the function that it plays. In addition, prior to board meeting, board members are given material which they must review, understand, and gather feedback on in order to make an informed decision/ vote.

Athena In order to be a good representative, it is essential to be a good listener. Remember, you are sent to the convention to determine which candidate you think will best represent your school at the board of education. You are not trying to find a candidate which aligns best with your ideas, rather one which aligns with the mission

  • f your school and the ideas of your peers. In order to choose an effective leader, it is

imperative to ask your peers what qualities they will look for in an effective student member and take this feedback to the day of the convention. You will learn more about this in the next few slides!

Shubhi: Now that you know how to be an effective leader and are informed about your duties, think about what you would personally look for in an effective student member. What are some issues you would like to have addressed, what kind of experience as a leader is most important for someone who will be representing you. Now, ask your peers the same question! Take this information to the convention to make an informed decision!

Shubhi: During the convention is going to be a super exciting time for all you! Make sure that you are respectful of your peers opinions as well as the candidates. Remember that they are putting themselves out there and it can be intimidating. Try to collaborate with the other delegates from your school. Remember contradicting

Athena You are essential part of the decision making process in choosing the next student leadership in Howard county. It is essential that you serve as an informed voter by doing your homework, in collecting feedback from your peers in what they look for in the next Student Member of the Board of Education. Make sure during the convention you are respectful of all the candidates, and if you disagree with another delegate or the candidate remember to be respectful when sharing your perspective.

slide-20

What if the candidate you vote for isn't a finalist?

Lo vour school Lo share their point of vic\v

  • Share leadership opportunilics

Peyton One of the most important jobs a delegate has is to ensure that they support whoever is chosen to be the next SMOB. So, if the candidate you wanted did not win, learn their perspective and be open- minded to what they can offer. You can also keep in contact with the candidates you voted for. Ask them to come speak at your school. There are millions of leadership opportunities all over the county, so keep an eye out for events where their perspective would be beneficial.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Shubhi: The two candidates who were selected during the convention will go on to the final election broadcasted to all the middle and high school students in Howard

  • County. Remember it is your job as the delegate to support who ever gets chosen to

be the next Student Member of the Board of Education. You will help the SMOB gather feedback, and make informed decisions. Your role as a delegate extends past the convention into amplifying the student voice in Howard County.
