  1. Emmaus High School Student Intern Teacher Program Inspiring the next generation of secondary educators

  2. Program Overview The Student Intern Teaching Program is a chance for our students to serve as assistant teachers in classrooms at Emmaus High School. We are currently preparing students for many career fields after high school, but this program allows us to support students in a career path that is the closest to all of us - secondary education. The Student Intern Teacher Program is an alternative to the current Independent Study option our students have, but with a focus on teaching and learning. To start, this program would be open to 12th grade students to work alongside teachers in classes with underclassmen. Our EHS teachers serve as voluntary cooperating/mentor teachers. Senior students will apply into this program and presumably have an interest in teaching and learning. This is a great way for seniors to take leadership, serve as role models, and connect with underclassmen in a variety of ways and to enrich and support their classroom experiences. 2

  3. Student Responsibilities Teach/Facilitate Students will have the opportunity to work with the cooperating teacher’s class in small groups, large groups, leading activities, and more. As students spend more time in the classroom, they can expect to handle more responsibility at the cooperating teacher's discretion. Student Intern Development The Office of Teaching and Learning will lead monthly seminars/meetings during Flex blocks for student interns. Attendance Students are expected to attend the class with which they are paired. 3

  4. Timeline The core team will create an application process that will be open to upcoming seniors. The application will include program details and expectations so students will know what is included in the Student Intern Program. The pairing of interested student interns and cooperating teachers will take place in the first few weeks of the semester once all schedules have been finalized. Just like the Independent Study, there will be an agreement document in place. LaBar 4

  5. What does this look like in a classroom? Students and cooperating teachers will be given a thorough explanation of acceptable and unacceptable practices, actions, etc… Protecting the student intern and protecting the privacy of students in the class are of utmost importance. Cooperating teachers will coach and develop the intern throughout the course so that they hopefully can teach a lesson on their own. Throughout the course, the interns can teach one-on-one, in smaller groups, and the whole-class instruction, if appropriate. The progression of teaching responsibilities will be at the cooperating teacher’s discretion. LaBar 5

  6. Grading A grade will be assigned to the Student Intern Teacher at the completion of the course, but the grade will not factor into the student’s GPA. The most significant portion of the intern’s grade will be the final portfolio that the interns work on throughout the semester and present at the end of the term. Credit Value Students will earn credit equal to the course for which they intern up to 1 credit; Students can break a full-year course into a half-year internship for .5 credit. 6
