Steam measurement objectives

To ensure steam generated by the boiler fulfils its design norms To establish steam consumption of the plant To estimate / establish steam consumption per batch of product To establish product/process specific steam consumption To establish steam losses, if any in process/plant To save money by plugging the losses

Principle of Operation

  • When steam passes through a restriction like an orifice plate installed in

a pipeline, pressure drop occurs. A Differential pressure transmitter measures DP across the orifice

  • Steam flow is proportional to square root of this pressure drop
  • Density of a compressible fluid like steam is a function of pressure and

temperature

  • The above input is taken in to computation unit by providing pressure

and temperature sensors

  • The steam flow indicated is fully compensated for variation in density due

to temperature and pressure variations.

  • Mass flow is calculated and values for both instantaneous and totalised

steam mass flow displayed
