HIGH VOLTAGE SERIES CIRCUITS PHASE I

Why are we here again?

  • Replacement fixture color.
  • Proposed new light locations from original plans.
  • Petition for additional lights.
  • Construction schedule including Public Works and

Water & Power Departments.

Typical HV Series Circuits Diagram

3

  • Open loop series circuit requires 6.6 amps and

variable high voltage dependent on the number of lights on system.

  • Since the lights are daisy-chained together, if one

lamp fails, the whole circuit would go dark.

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Department of Public Works

Low Voltage Multiple Circuits Diagram

4

  • 110/220 volt system that utilizes multiple circuits in parallel with

separate lighting controls.

  • Smaller circuits equals easier troubleshooting and less affected

lights when circuit is under repair.

Safety Factor

5

 Public Safety

  • Due to their aged infrastructure, HV series systems

experience intermittent service outages affecting entire neighborhoods.  Worker Safety

  • Lower voltage (120/240 volts) systems are safer to

work on than high voltage (1,000 plus volts) systems.

  • Frequent grounding problems and lead shielded

conductors are prone to electrical shorts that can yield greater risk of electrocution. Use of thermoplastic insulated conductors instead of lead shielded conductors reduces the risk.

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Department of Public Works

Reliability Factor

6

 Availability of Obsolete Equipment – Difficulty Servicing the System

  • Transformers are difficult to procure due to
  • bsolescence and typically cost 10 times

more than (low volt) counterparts.

  • Heavy duty incandescent bulbs are no

longer produced and City has limited supply of replacement stock.

Color Temperature…What is it?

All lighting sources emit a range of wavelengths, which, when combined, produce the color of light perceived by the human eye.

28

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Department of Public Works

Color Temperature

Corrected Color Temperature (CCT) is a shorthand way to describe the light’s color, in terms of its apparent “warmth” or “coolness”. CCT is measured in kelvin (K).
