  4. Substa nc e Ca te g ory This course covers the transport of Category B, Exempt Human & Animal Specimens, Dry Ice. This course dose not cover the transport of Infectious Substances, Affecting Humans, Category A (cultured or amplified stocks of human pathogens OR genetically modified organisms or microorganisms meeting the definition of an Infectious Substance, Category A material www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  5. Shipping Re g ula tions A variety of national and international agencies regulate the transport, exporting, and importing of research materials. These agencies include the: • International Air Transport Association (IATA) Each country and/or hazardous material carrier/courier can have their own regulations in addition to the national and international requirements www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  6. Purpose of Shipping Re g ula tions Ensure safe shipment of research materials through: • Training people involved in any aspect of shipping • Properly classifying research materials • Packaging research materials to prevent release during transport • Identifying research materials on the package and shipping papers Only training personnel may be involved in research material shipping or transport www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  7. F ollowing Shipping Re g ula tions The shipper is responsible for complying with all applicable shipping regulations including permits and export licences. • Instructions/Guidance should be sought when necessary. www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  8. F ollowing Shipping Re g ula tions Failure to follow shipping regulations may result in the following: • Package delays during transport • Mishandling by the courier • Potential for inadvertent release of the contents • Criminal/civil penalties Complying with shipping regulations protects the material being shipped, those individuals handling the Package , and controls the potential for negative impacts on the environment. www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  9. De finition of Ha za rdous Ma te ria l A Hazardous Material is defined as a substance or material, that when transported is capable of posing a risk to health, safety, or property. Hazardous Materials include biological, chemical and radioactive materials. www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  10. Ha za rdous Ma te ria l T ra ining Staff who perform any of the following with Hazardous Materials must be trained on a regular basis: • Package • Prepare Shipping paperwork • Handle • Transport • Receive www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  12. Cla ssifying Ha za rdous Ma te ria ls Each Hazardous Material listed in the IATA Hazardous Materials table is assigned a UN (United Nations) number. The UN number allows emergency responders to act appropriately in the event of an incident. www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  15. Dry Ic e Dry ice is classified by IATA as a miscellaneous hazard, class 9 during transportation for three reasons: www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  16. Ha ndling Dry Ic e • Dry ice must be stored in a well-ventilated location well-ventilated location. NEVER store dry ice in a cold room, warm room, tightly sealed device, closet, plastic/glass container, or other enclosed space unless adequate supply ventilation is provided, as the sublimation of dry ice to CO 2 gas will cause an airtight container to expand or possibly explode explode. In small amounts, CO 2 is harmless, but in larger quantities it can lead to shortness shortness of breath reath or even asphyxiation. It is important to always use dry ice in a well-ventilated area http://polarice.ie/about ‐ dry ‐ ice/health ‐ safety/ http://www.uvm.edu/safety/lab/DryIce www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  17. Ha ndling Dry Ic e • NEVER handle dry ice with your bare hands. Dry ice temperature is –78.5ºC. Always wear thermal gloves Always wear thermal gloves to reduce risk of thermal burns to the skin. • Wear long pants, sleeves and closed toe shoes long pants, sleeves and closed toe shoes to cover any areas of skin that might be exposed to dry ice. • Wear safety glasses when breaking a big block of dry ice. • Never place your head near dry ice vessel. If you working with or near dry ice and suddenly find you are having difficulty breathing or are out of breath, open any nearby windows and vacate the area for at least 10 to 15 minutes. http://www.ecu.edu/cs ‐ admin/oehs/ih/Dry ‐ Ice.cfm http://polarice.ie/about ‐ dry ‐ ice/health ‐ safety/ http://www.uvm.edu/safety/lab/DryIce www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

Ha ndling Dry Ic e Dispose of unneeded dry ice by: • Letting the unused portion sublimate in a Letting the unused portion sublimate in a well- well- ventilated area clear of people e.g. ventilated area clear of people e.g. fume hood. fume hood. • NEVER dispose of dry ice in a sink, other device or trash. • NEVER leave unneeded dry ice in hallways or other public areas. • Do not place dry ice on a solid surface countertop as the extreme cold will cause damage. Never transport dry ice in your personal vehicle. http://www.ecu.edu/cs ‐ admin/oehs/ih/Dry ‐ Ice.cfm http://polarice.ie/about ‐ dry ‐ ice/health ‐ safety/ http://www.uvm.edu/safety/lab/DryIce www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18

  20. Pa c ka g ing Dry Ic e Secure your samples in such a way that when dry ice sublimates, they will not move freely inside of the insulated box. This can be accomplished by wedging your samples in place with cardboard or Styrofoam. Fragile containers such as glass tubes or vials must be wrapped with cushioning material. Dry Ice Shipments should not be placed in just a Styrofoam. The Styrofoam must be placed into a cardboard box. www.cancertrials.ie www.cancertrials.ie Cancer Trials Ireland Training Course Biological Substance/Dry Ice_V2.0_27 ‐ Mar ‐ 18
