  5. What do we mean by the terms … Sex? Gender? Stereotype?

  6. Sex "Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. "Male" and "female" are sex categories. World Health Organisation (WHO)

  7. Gender “Gender” refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. “Masculine” and “feminine” are gender categories. World Health Organisation (WHO)

  8. Stereotype A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

Questions to consider • Who is the advert aimed at? • Is it immediately clear what is being advertised? • Who is shown on the image? • If there are people in the advert, how would you describe them? • How are women and men portrayed? Is this the same or different? How? • How much space does the woman’s/man’s image take up? Where are they positioned in relation to one another? • In the image is one person more powerful than another? What makes you think this? • What does the wording say about the advertiser’s attitudes to women and men?
