  3. FOCUS ⚫ All parents are encouraged to utilize FOCUS . This service in combination with communication with your child’s school counselor enables you and your student to have the most up-to-date information regarding your student’s progress during their high school career.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) ⚫ One parent + student needs PIN number for electronic signature (www.fsaid.ed.gov). ⚫ Application on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. ⚫ Required by ALL schools to apply for aid and for low interest Stafford loans. ⚫ Determines family’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC). ⚫ Does not ask for equity in home ⚫ Considers income of the CUSTODIAL parent only.

  26. COMMUNICATION ⚫ Counselor Phone #’s ⚫ Counselor’s Corner on newsletter ⚫ Web site ⚫ Individual meetings with Seniors ⚫ Weekly to Bi-Weekly Emails ⚫ College Career Counselor- open door policy with pass. Students can sign-up on clip board outside the office if not available when they come by.

  27. DON’T BE A HELICOPTER PARENT! ⚫ Student should be doing applications ⚫ Empower your students! ⚫ Student meltdown ⚫ Parents make mistakes-jeopardize acceptance ⚫ Be supportive ⚫ School choice right FIT for STUDENT--- not PARENT!

  28. FINAL THOUGHTS ⚫ Senior year DOES COUNT!! ⚫ All acceptances PROVISIONAL dependent upon final semester grades ⚫ Weak Senior schedule – jeopardizes acceptance at competitive schools ⚫ Change in schedule – MUST notify colleges ⚫ Things too tough?? Call Counselors!
