SATISFACTORY PROGRESS
In order to remain in the PhD or MFA program, all students must maintain good academic standing which includes the following:
- GPA – Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Enrollment of Units – Students must maintain continuous
registration (at least 12 units) each quarter throughout graduate career
- Normative Time to Degree – Students must advance to
candidacy and complete the degree within the limitations established per their program. A student exceeding the maximum time may not be able to receive University resources (e.g., financial aid, TA-ships, housing, etc.)
GRADING
- Acceptable grades are: A+ through B and “S”
- Always choose “Grade Option” – “P” / “NP”
courses will not count toward graduate course (200+) requirements
- Grade Reports – Check your transcript!
- Incomplete (I)
- SOH Policy requires all Incomplete grades to be
changed by August 31 to receive funding.
- No Report (NR)
- Withdrawal (W)
FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT
- 12 units MINIMUM
- 16 units MAXIMUM
- 17+ units – Email Graduate Coordinator
- Students must register in at least 12 units before fee
payment deadline in order for fees to be paid
- Teaching Assistants/Associates (TA) must enroll in 399:
University Teaching units under the appropriate department/program

- Submit electronic Enrollment Exception through
StudentAccess
- No guarantee that request will be approved
- Automatic $3.00 processing charge for any late

ALTERNATE ENROLLMENT OPTIONS
Intercampus Exchange Program
- Allows students to concurrently register at another UC
campus
- Must submit paperwork at least 4 weeks prior to start of
quarter
In-Absentia
- Conducting research outside of California
- Renewable for up to 6 quarters
- Must have advanced to candidacy for PhD
ALTERNATE ENROLLMENT OPTIONS (CONT.)
Leave of Absence (LOA)
- 3 quarter maximum without exception
- Must complete at least one quarter of work at UCI
Filing Fee
- One-time only option for students who are ABD
- Maintains active student status without having to
register or pay full-time fees
