  4. ACTI VI TI ES ESA is one of the few space agencies in the world to combine responsibility in nearly all areas of space activity. • Navigation 1 . Space science • Telecom m unications & 2 . Hum an spaceflight I ntegrated Applications 3 . Exploration • Technology 4 . Earth observation • Operations 5 . Launchers * Space science is a Mandatory program m e , all Member States contribute to it according to GNP . All other programmes are Optional, funded ‘a la carte’ by Participating States.

  8. ESA’s I ntegrated Applications Prom otion Program m e ( ARTES 2 0 ) The goal : Foster new utilization of existing space capacity and capability, in close partnership w ith end-users, through the developm ent of integrated ( different space and non space technologies) applications projects w hich dem onstrate a potential for sustainable services. Addressing global challenges in different them atic areas: Space for: Health, Safety, Transport, Energy, W ater, Environm ent, Agriculture, I nsurance, Education, … Incubator of Services

  9. Many households in Europe are not expected to have broadband even by 2 0 2 0 Projected % of households that do not have a superfast line by 2020 (the inverse of the commercial take-up by 2020). They may be outside the footprint for superfast networks or they may have accessibility but either cannot afford it or just have nott taken a line Results from the BB-MED ( B road B and ME diterranean D evelopment) ESA Study made in cooperation with the EI B

  10. I nvestm ent gap: a m ajor bottleneck • The Council of the EU notes [ 1] : The investment needs for achieving the Digital Agenda objective are estimated to reach up to EUR 270 billion … while the private sector investment is expected to be not more than EUR 50 billion until 2020: the resulting investment gap represents a major bottleneck to infrastructure provision • Even for basic Broadband: ‘A huge investment would be needed to secure 1Mbps coverage at an affordable price for all households in the EU’ according to Commissioner Kroes [ 2] • Satellite broadband appears as the most efficient and in many cases the only means for providing broadband in areas where the cost of terrestrial network deployment is prohibitive • In particular in rural and remote areas, where satellites may be the only means for communication, their role may be key for growth and for retaining local population • Satellites are recognized by Governments as a means to connect rural citizens: in Australia public plans for broadband include 48.000 satellite internet connections (10.000 already in place) using existing satellites, and two new high throughput broadband satellites (HTS) have been ordered [ 1] Council of the EU, Brussels, 30 and 31 May 2012-Conclusions on the Digital Single Market and Governance of the Single Market [ 2] Commissioner N. Kroes, SPEECH/ 10/ 537, Dublin, 12 October 2010 ESA UNCLASSI FI ED – For Official Use
