  • $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to Indiana

University-Purdue University Indianapolis is targeted to boost the number of students graduating with bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by 10 percent.

NSF STEP Goals

  • “... STEP Type 1 activities should be aimed at adapting and

implementing best practices that will lead to an increase in the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) obtaining STEM degrees.”

  • “The goal of the project must be to increase the total graduation

numbers of such students at the institution.”

  • “The proposal must include specific numerical targets for these

increases.”

  • “A project cannot focus efforts to increase the graduation numbers

at the expense of degrees in other STEM fields.

CI-STEP Goals

CI-STEP at IUPUI is creating a central Indiana pipeline to increase the number of students from central Indiana obtaining STEM degrees. The goals of this project are to increase the numbers of students of all demographic groups who:

  • (1) pursue STEM academic and career pathways;
  • (2) participate in STEM research, industry internships, and honors activities;
  • (3) graduate with an undergraduate degree in STEM fields; and
  • (4) transition into industry, graduate and professional programs.

The program has set a target of increasing the number of STEM graduates at IUPUI by 10% per year (an increase of an additional 782 STEM graduates by 2015).

Eligibility

  • Full- and part-time faculty at
  • IUPUI
  • IVY Tech
  • Butler University
  • Individual faculty members pursuing teaching innovation

projects are encouraged to include at least one other faculty

  • r staff member in some capacity (see RFP for more details).

Funding

  • Awards limited to $25,000
  • May range from $5,000 - $25,000

Application/Implementation Timeline

  • Might be implemented over one or two semesters
  • May or may not include summer work
  • May 15, 2013: End date for all work pertaining to RFP

Submission and Review Process

Step 1

  • Supervising Administrator Letter of Support

Step 2

  • After Administrator support is given the committee may

accept, reject, or recommend improvement

  • Proposals that are rejected or with recommended

improvements will be returned to the proposer(s).

Step 3

  • Commence proposed work after receipt of award notice

Item 1 – Work is beyond proposer(s) position requirements: Performed outside normal work hours or duty days –OR– Involving activity not normally required –OR– Encompassing a scope of activities not normally required Item 2 – Retention, Persistence, and Graduation goals are met: Prioritize student learning and successful achievement Relationship between performance objectives or project goals, the plan of work and methods, and the intended student learning outcomes. Item 3 – Evaluation and Assessment Methods Strategies and tools used throughout project Connected to course learning outcomes
