University of the 3rd age Matthew Homer, Waste Strategy Manager Waste Minimisation and Recycling in Islington Introduction How much waste?
  • 80,000 tonnes each year from Islington
  • Cost around £8m each year to dispose of
  • In less than 2 hours the UK produces enough waste to fill the Albert
Hall How much waste? Or put another way…
  • We use over six billion glass bottles and jars each year.
  • It would take you over three and a half thousand years to sing "Six
Billion Green Bottles"! Or put another way…
  • Each year in Britain, we throw away 28 million tonnes of rubbish from
  • home. This weighs the same as three and a half million double Decker
  • buses. A queue of buses that long would go around the world one and
a half times.

Or put another way…
  • Each child uses a total of 5850 nappies in their lifetime - which would
weigh the same as an average family car! Or put another way…
  • Every year, an estimated 7 billion plastic bags are given away by
  • supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 100 bags for every person in
the UK.
  • Stop press!!! Since the 5p bag change came in this has reduced by
85% Disposing of London’s waste North London Waste Authority
