Chairman’s Report

The 2007-08 season has been an historic season for RBYFC in many ways. In July last year through the hard work of everybody involved in RBYFC we were presented with the FA Charter Standard Development Club Award by Mark Francois MP for Rochford. This achievement should not be underestimated due to RBYFC being regarded by the FA as the largest youth soccer club in

  • Essex. With this award the club can now progress forward with realising our aim of having a ground

that is managed by ourselves for the players of RBYFC and we will be in a better position to obtain grants towards real changing facilities for the players to use. This will be a long journey but the committee are 100% behind this plan for the lease on the ground behind the new Leisure Centre in Rawreth Lane. We have presented a full proposal on how it will be managed, including working as partners with the Council and the people living on the newly built housing estate. This is the closest we have come in 32 years of having a place we can call our home, this also may be the last chance as well due to the constant selling of green space for building which in part then adds to a larger demand for spaces in teams for the growing community. Of the 3 clubs in the final assessment by the Rochford Leisure Services Department we are the largest by far and I believe more importantly the only club based in Rayleigh ,with Hambro Colts based in Rochford and Elmwood Colts based in

  • Eastwood. However, you never know what these decisions are ultimately based on but the only

thing I can say for certain is that if we are not successful it will not be for lack of efforts or compla- cency on the clubs part and on that I would especially like to thank Paul Quick and Karl Hayes for all

  • f their time and efforts. If the decision does not go our way I can assure you we are committed to

keep looking for land in the Rayleigh’ catchment and are already talking to the Catholic Church and Rayleigh Town Council in case our proposal is unsuccessful. This year has seen unprecedented growth in our club with our first ever Cougars team formed at under 7 and our total teams reaching 30. Part of this has been achieved by settling our differences with Rayleigh Town Council and getting a 3 year agreement to use King Georges, a central point for all young players to come and start their careers, King Georges is vital to the clubs progression. We have also seen some proactive recruitment for players with the committee being re-structured to have a Publicity Officer and School Liaison Officer who have boosted our presence in Rayleigh Schools as well as a poster campaign in commercial premises Rayleigh, both of these initiatives led by Neil Kirsh and Danny Stalley have certainly seen our club expand. For the coming year we are looking to implement Gift Aid into the club, with an aim to start collecting with this year’s registration. In a nutshell we are under all of the same cost of living increases as anybody else and although we have not increased registrations in the last 3 years we could soon start seeing the clubs funds dwindling, so increases in registration fees, which I am sure nobody wants to see. We are now registered as a CSC (Community Sports Club) which means that all parents can sign

  • ver a part of the existing fee as a gift to the club, we can then claim back 28p in the pound on this

so boosting the club whilst costing the parents nothing. This comes out of the tax we all pay anyway and will stop the need for registration fee increases for the future. I personally would prefer my tax going to help a community based team that my children benefit from rather than to the Government. I would also like to add to this subject that we have this year increased our fundraising through the social side of the club with nights at the Tandoori Parlour and the very popular Quiz nights. I would like to thank Kate and Mike Driscoll for all of their hard work and to everybody who has sup- ported these events; it does make a difference to our funds.

This year has seen 3 new members to the committee Adam Birch, Chris Hockett and Danny Stalley, their enthusiasm and efforts are already being seen within the club. Whilst on the subject of the committee, I would like to thank all the committee members for their support with keeping the club running, some of whom do not now have children playing for the club. The committee is the backbone of the club, and we are now looking for new committee members to help strengthen the existing members, and provide future management of the club. Dave Evans and Colin Mayor will be leaving the committee in May due to work commitment and on behalf of the club I would like to thank them for their work and efforts in their time on the committee. Dave was the previous Chairman of Rayleigh Boys and his knowledge and input into the club will be sadly missed, Dave’s team will be leaving at under 16 this season but on behalf of everybody well done lads and thank you for your dedication to RBYFC over many years. Another big thank you to Clare Rankin-Maclean our club Secretary. Clare is the person who signs on the 400 plus children which is a major task in itself, removing all of the mistakes and ensuring the correct pa- perwork is on time otherwise the children would not be eligible to play. Clare is also very active on a daily basis dealing with all correspondence results cards and referee fees. Clare’s son leaves the club with the under 16’s this year and we have already told her we will not let her resign with him. Clare is a great exam- ple of the hours of work put in every year by so many people in the club who really deserve more credit. Well done to all the managers, coaches and volunteers throughout the club for their hard work and commit- ment to their teams and the Club. We would not survive without them. Finally, well done to all the children, who have played their hearts out for Rayleigh Boys this year. Remem- ber win or lose always play fair and respect your opponents, and most of all enjoy it. Have a good summer, and look forward to a new and even more enjoyable season in the autumn. Martin Shields

U7 Lions

After a shaky start against Catholic Lions, our rampage started to gath- er pace, a good win against Wickford Town and a hard fought win against one of the stronger teams Leigh Ramblers, gave the boys confidence. The lion’s rampage was turning into a slaughter, the next three games produced twenty goals and some exceptional football from the boys. The next game against Hawkwell saw a poor first half, but an inspired 2nd half with 3 classy goals which earned us the win, Southend Manor tried to kick us off the park, but our pass- ing and football skills under minded their aggressive approach. Two further great wins against Essex Royals and Great Wakering set us up for a rematch against Catholic Lions, where we produced a disciplined win. Leigh Ramblers came looking for revenge, but to no avail, this was probably one of our poorer games, but they still couldn’t break our unbeaten record, this was followed by two further games in which we notched up another 12 goals.  Ellis- rarely been troubled during the season, but when called upon has saved us on many occasion!!  Josh- nothing gets past him, has mastered the art of the aggressive challenge.  Sam-big boot, scored from the halfway line, solid at the back.  Henry-long legs, those legs don’t stop running, great work rate and with many exceptional goals.  Toby-free kick and corner expert, always solid in midfield, achieving amazing top corner goals.  Rhys-little midfield dynamo, skilful runs and majestic passing.  James-solid up front and right midfield, lazy runs, hard working and tough tackler.  Freddie-no-nonsense if in doubt kick it out defending, tough tackling, and good team player  Kai-all rounder, scored couple of important goals, cool on the ball and makes some skilful runs. The boys approach to training and matches is constantly met, with an enthusiastic manner. They always give 100%, but some times only listen 50% of the time. Imagine what they would be like if they listened 100% of the time?. Due to our current form, we have become the team that other teams want to beat, but due to the boys desire to remain unbeaten and the constant improvements in their footballing abilities we still remain undefeated. We would like to thank the boys for an entertaining last two years. We have had many a funny moment dur- ing this time, we would also like to thank all the parents for their continuing support. U7 Tigers

It has been a pleasure to coach such a fantastic bunch of boys. Their energy and enthusiasm has been a joy to be around. Each boy plays the game, both in training and in a match, with a smile and a determination to try his best. This season has seen a group of boys who didn’t know each other, turn into a great little team, full of friendship and fun. They have held their own in the matches they have played, beginning their journey of learning the game of football with a very strong start. Well done all the Tigers!!!!!! Harry S; (The Wizard) Often leaving opponents spellbound by his energy and tough tackling. Has a long range shot that puts fear into the hearts of many! Well done, Harry! Sam M; (The Rock) Great defending and positional play with superbly timed tackles means no forward relishes taking on “The Rock”. Great discipline at the back sees Sam as Mr Reliable. Well done, Sam! Daniel J; (The Babyfaced Assassin) Getting better and better as the season goes on. Providing the killer pass seems to come naturally to the playmaker of the side. Deadly accurate with shooting as well as the pass. Well done, Dan! Charlie Y; (Bam-bam) Although playing in a midfield role, Charlie manages to get forward to score some important goals. Delivers a crunching tackle and has a cultured left foot. Well done, Char- lie! Zak W; (The Rocket) With his jet propelled boots on, Zak constantly showed defenders a clean pair of heels. Terrific dribbling and goals. Keep it up Zak. Well done! Daniel L; (Terminator Junior) Fearless in the tackles and his ‘take no prisoners’ attitude to play, he is already starting to make a name for himself. Great work, well done, Daniel. Joe V; (The Hammer) With an iron will, Joe continues to show great ability. Can play anywhere on the field, tackling, passing and shooting. What a left foot!! Well done, Joe! Freddie C; (The Power) As confidence grows, so does his game. Established himself as part

  • f a very good defensive partnership. Great set-piece delivery. Well done, Freddie!

Archie D; (The Bull). Like his namesake in a china shop, Archie can be unstoppable in front of goal. Great play up front, often on his own. Well done, Archie! A Few Thanks To Maria Seadon who is ever reliable and a great parent rep. To Alan, Les and Mark for all their help and support over the year, in refereeing games and helping with the equipment. Special Thanks To R.P Martin Brokers and Countywedding.co.uk who are our proud kit sponsors. WELL DONE TIGERS AND ROLL ON NEXT SEASON!!!!!!! U7 Leopards

The Under 7 Leopard team was formed during our enforced relocation to Fairview under the coaching of Noel Travers and Dave Mitchell. The boys showed early promise in training and gradually settled into their positions which have large- ly remained unchanged throughout the season. One problem area was the goalkeeper position and various boys were tried out in our early matches. The team only really stabilised once Jonathan Travers stepped forward to take the gloves and over the course of the season he has settled into the role well, making some important saves at critical points in matches. Jonathan’s decision to move from defence to goalkeeper led to George Huckfield taking over the defensive duties which proved to be a master stroke. As a left footer he gave the team real balance, his strong tackling and ability to make long passes and more importantly see possible long balls early have meant he has excelled in his defensive role. Making up

  • ur back three is Edward Mitchell, who has improved dramatically with every game. Edward’s tenacity in the tackle has

seen him play the role of last man extremely effectively. There can be no doubt that our success has been built around this solid, disciplined defensive unit and they most importantly take great pride and enjoyment in their roles. Our midfield players have all played fantastically well and shown a real cutting edge, whether getting forward in attack or tracking back to help out in defence. The key to this unit has been their ability to look up and pass the ball; while this sounds simple we have seen that few teams can match us in this regard. In Jamie Kerr we are again fortunate to posses another gifted left footer and his crossing has resulted in many of our goals. Jamie has also shown a great eye for goal and rarely misses an opportunity presented to him. Luke Golding plays the central midfield role tirelessly and with great

  • skill. What sets him out most is his competitiveness and determination to win! Matthew (Matt) Barnes has shown a tre-

mendous ability to play his way out of trouble and makes extremely well placed through balls to the strikers. He fre- quently pops up throughout the pitch to lend a hand to a team mate who is struggling to cope with the opposition. Our main strikers, James Dennison and Rory Gregory have both shown a decisive instinct in front of goal. On many

  • ccasions they have broken free and caught the opposition cold. They have a real ability not to panic in front of goal and

have taken their time to place the perfect shot. James, who has also shown great skill and determination when he has played in midfield possesses calmness in front of goal that many much older players would be delighted with. Rory has pace in abundance and this has allowed him to play as a lone striker with great success. You can rely on him to get to the through ball before any defender! All the boys deserve a tremendous amount of praise for their commitment and it’s been a pleasure to see them pro-

  • gress. We are extremely lucky to possess such a bunch of skilful, competitive players, but what really sets them apart is

that they are a great bunch of lads – a real pleasure to coach and manage. A big thank to all the parents (and uncles!) for their support this season, without their involvement, commitment and dedication to getting the boys to both training and matches we wouldn’t be half the team we are! Special thanks must go to Claire Dennison for acting as Team Secretary – a very important role! It was a great season and we won some fan- tastic games, but most importantly the boys all enjoyed themselves. Noel / Dave P W D L 11(EL) 7 2 2

As our first season as a team draws to a close I would like to commend the boys for their commitment and hard work, training and playing without a word of complaint no matter what the weather, rain, wind, snow or the occa- sional sunshine. It has proved to be a very satisfying first season with some quite brilliant performances and

  • results. We have a great team spirit and long may it continue. It has been a pleasure to see the boys develop

this year and I believe we are well positioned to mount a challenge in our first competitive season later this year. Well done to all the boys of the U7 Pumas which consisted of the following players: Luke Miller - Goalkeeper - has been keen from the start to be our No. 1 and our No1 he is. Always keen to practice his keeping skills and has shown brave keeping on many occasion. Ibrahim Haidei – Defender - has grown into a solid defender and rarely does a ball get past him. Ibrahim has been instrumental in ensuring the team does not concede many goals. James Taylor - Defender/Midfield - shown great improvement over the second half of the season and has started to show the win-ball mentality the team needs. Harry Dell - Defender/Midfield - A versatile player happy to play out of defence or in midfield. A cultured player

  • f the ball with firm but fair tackling style.

Billy Buckley – Midfield - the heart of the team. An unbelievable engine that keeps going. Great tackler with a fierce right foot shot as his 11 goals are testament to. Voted player of the year from a poll of the parents - well done Billy! Alfie Bridge - Midfield/Forward - growing in confidence as the season progresses and is always very keen to be on the pitch to do his bit. Lucas Bennett – Forward - shown a great deal of football savvy over the season and is improving all the time. Has scored a couple of good goals for the team. Harvey Deal – Forward - our out and out centre forward with a deadly accuracy in front of goal, scoring 12 for the season. A two footed player with a liking for dribbling the ball! I would like to pass on our thanks to Paul Varcoe and Sue Miller for their support throughout the year and JBDS for their kind sponsorship of the team. Of course, it goes without saying that without the continued support and commitment of all the parents, we would not have such a great team - a big thanks to you all. Well Done Boys!! U7 Cougars

I inherited 4 boys on the 6th October 2007 and the progress this side has made in that short space of time is remarkable. The boys played their first ever game in November and have only played 7 games in total. The fact they have managed to score 29 goals in those 7 games highlights the attacking strength within our team, in fact the team remains unbeaten and shows the boys have an abundance of natural ability, a very healthy desire to play football and each boy hates losing so they never know when to give up. The scary thing is that due to their match inexperience the boys are going to get a lot better and I have no doubt that they will. With the enthusiasm the boys have for the game it has been a pleasure for me and I am very proud to be their manager. Oscar Sweeney —His goalkeeping skills have improved dramatically and he has been making saves that no 7 year old should be making. Shows no fear and is a pleasure to teach. Sam Bateman—he ‘Javier Maschherano’ of the Cougars. Sam never plays a bad game, has a wicked shot with eirther foot and has saved us on a number of occasions with prefectly timed interceptions. Taylor Turner—You’re not going to win a tackle against Taylor, a very strong player whose dribbling can turn defence into attack and has an eye for goal as well. Luke Polley—Luke has played the majority of the season as a defender and is progressing every week. He is very pas- sionate about his football and saved our unbeaten run against Wickford with a last minute goal line clearance. Andrew Mead— An all round player who is solid whether it is a defender mopping up the oppositions attacks, a midfielder tackling or passing or as a striker scoring goals. Gabriel Gosden— Has progressed well over the season and has been consistent and solid in defence. He has been un- lucky not to have scored his season when played as a striker. He has a very strong shot and good positional sense Danny Lee Noas—The scorer of great goals and the midfield dynamo who dictates the tempo of the match. Can defend, create and score. The Cougars’ ‘Steven Gerrard’. Chay Ewers—The most skilful player in the team, can turn players inside out and finish well. A very enthusiastic player who has a strong competitive side to his game. Alfie Cassidy—Joined the Cougars late in the season but has shown that in defence or midfield he is a strong player. Played as a striker in our last match ans was a phenomenon and managed to score a double hat trick in one match A big thank you to Ian Turner, tMark Bateman & Matt Law for assistance with training and another big thank you to my wife Hayley for assisting with the administration. Thank you to all the parents for their support of the boys at all the matches and training each week. I want to also thank Ian Law & Countryside Estates for their generous sponsorship. P W D L F A 19 7 3 9 22 37 Into our second season and more serious improvement from the boys, the only minus being we don’t feel

  • ur league position gives a true reflection of the excellent football played by the team. Most of the games

we lost were decided by the odd chance either a great goal or save by the opposition. We did have a cou- ple of hiccups during the season but boys will be boys and I’m sure by their reaction they don’t enjoy it and we won’t see it next season. We had some cracking wins over the top teams including 2 – 1 over Hawkwell and Concord, teams that had beat us earlier in the season. The first half against Ashingdon can only be described as Total Football, emulating the great Dutch side of the 1970’s. Our two well fought games against 2nd placed Forest Glade were a joy to watch, almost as enjoyable as the heroic draw in a very physical game against Catholic where we were once again down to the bare bones, having no subs. Liam : Braveheart – Never shies away from a challenge on pitch and in goal. Ewan : The Wand – A Left foot that finds it mark. Harrison : The New Hansen – Always composed. Reece : Mr Cool - Don’t Panic he covers from everywhere . James : The Engine Room – What do they feed him. Jacob : The Heartbeat – Every attack starts with him. Charlie : Mr Versatile - Always willing to take that new challenge. Craig : Captain – Right Foot or Left Foot it’s in the net including many assists. We look forward to the new season with real confidence. With a great group of boys our aim is to improve their already well advanced training and hope they continue to enjoy the whole experience. Steve’s only concern is that Liam and Harrison will soon be bigger than him. A final big thank you to Ray Pocock for Refereeing all our home matches through the season. We realise it can be a thankless task but one we know deep down he really relishes. “WELL DONE BOYS” for a most enjoyable season. We look forward to many more to come... Neil & Steve. One year on, and it’s great to have witnessed the boys individual development as well as the overall progress of the team throughout the season. It has been a lively introduction to league mini-soccer for the players, parents and coaches alike, best reflected in the fact there has been only one drawn game all season! As the boys mature and the teams consistency improves, our Tigers can look forward to some exciting times ahead. We have 10 terrific boys in the squad, and we hope they look forward to, and enjoy the next season as much as the last. Archie “Smiley” Davies Defence/Midfield Archie’s permanent smile on a Saturday & Sunday shows how much he is enjoying his football. This second season with the Tigers has seen him cement his position as a key defender and he is showing real promise driving forward from defence, inspiring his team mates. Bertie “Bassett” Reade Midfield/Striker Bertie has continued to lead by example. His enthusiasm for the game and drive in midfield has been a key factor for the team this year. His work rate, determination and quick feet coupled with his contribution to the goal tally make him a worthy Captain. George “Berbatov” Burlock Midfield/Striker George is a challenger to Archie in the smiling stakes. He loves his train- ing and is very popular amongst his team mates. The boys have been encouraged to pass more and George is leading the way, demonstrating good vision on the pitch. He strikes the ball cleanly and is now a strong contestant for the taker of the set pieces. Jacques “The Lynchmeister” Lynch Striker Jacques has made a lot of progress this season. He has bagged a hatful of goals, works hard for the team and demonstrates a willingness to use both feet and his head. His ability to find the back of the net has been a real bonus for the team but the celebrations need working on! Luke “Twinkle Toes” Hayton Midfield/Striker Luke can reflect on a season where he has made a significant contribution to the team. There has been a notable improvement in his passing, tackling and finishing resulting in him becoming an increasingly influential player. He has shown us on his day he is a match winner Luke “Scholesy” Simson Defence Luke has again been a very prominent player for the Tigers. He continues to demon- strate natural leadership skills on the pitch and his work rate is second to none. Defenders are often the unsung heroes, but Luke’s significant contribution during the season has been noted by all. “Scholesy” gets awarded Vice Captaincy for new season. Stephen “The Cat” Kirsh Striker/Goalkeeper “The Cat”, like Ollie is terrific in goal and equally as effective on the pitch. Single minded with a natural eye for goal, Stephen has impressed us with his clinical finishing. Fast feet, drive and deter- mination have caught out the best of defences this season. Thomas “The Hit Man” Stalley Defender/Midfiel Thomas has established himself as a key defender and utility player, and his team mates have been reliant on his set piece deliveries. Strong on the pitch, a combination of grit and an improving first touch are clear signs of him being able to influence games with his pace and power. Tyler “Pit Bull” Timcke Midfield Tyler can be very proud of his season. He has continued to develop as a midfielder, rarely losing a tackle and always driving the team forward. His tenacity on the pitch belies his pleasant personality off it, a sign of his commitment to the team. Tyler has shone this season. Oliver “No prisoners” Dowman Midfield/Goalkeeper His nick name gives it away! Ollie is a tough tackling midfielder who is equally as determined between the sticks. He is integral to the team but we have a real problem with Ollie; we miss him when he is not in goal and we miss him when he is not on the pitch! PROMOTION!! was gained after a gruelling 20 match season, in which the team showed all aspects to their game. Passing remains our greatest strength and in many games this has been a pleasure to watch. In addition to this the spirit amongst the players and the will to win has been a decisive factor in many games. We look forward to contin- uing our progression in division 2. Meet the team: Jordan Aspinal – A true match winner, he is the one you want to bag you a goal. His quick feet have once again left many defenders seeing the Number 10 on the back of his shirt! He had also done an excellent job in the sticks too. Jack Beal – The stylish left footed attacking midfielder has contributed in the goal stakes and has many goal as- sists to his name. A player who at training always seems to win the skill competitions, and when he has put the gloves on many a great save has followed. Abbi Brown – A tenacious player who tries her best. Abbi is willing to listen and attempt the skills she learned in

  • training. Always enthusiastic and has been a pleasure to coach this season.

Jack Hooper – The terminator!! leaves attackers lying on the ground with his fair (but oh so tough) tackling. Add to his game the improvement of his passing and we have an excellent defender. Luke Ingram – Luke has shown great maturity and discipline in the role he has played for the team this season. His reading of the game appears years ahead of his age, a dependable keeper who has played his part in the sticks. Tom Jarman – A key player, who even in tough matches displays his silky skills and timely challenges. With con- sistent performances combined with his versatility means he has produced the goods in defence and midfield. Daniel Warrens – Our Captain lead by example in sharing the goalkeeping responsibilities. A dynamic attacking midfielder who has netted on several vital occasions and his ability to always be involved is a credit to his game. Sean Watson – Our silent assassin!! His reading of the game and last ditch tackles has stopped many an attacker

  • scoring. Also his ability to bring the ball out of the defence when under pressure is a valuable asset to the team.

A big thank you to all the parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties, brothers and sisters who have shared this journey with us. Seeing you all pick up leaves (Hambro home game), get tangled in rope and trying to put up Shane`s table has brought smiles to our faces. We would like to say it has been a pleasure to coach your children and we look forward to continuing their progres- sion next season. Kelvin and Simon. P.S. It is hard to believe that this time last year we didn’t have enough boys to make a team. To begin with there was only Josh- ua James and Jack Renew and we started to think that all the other boys of their age in Rayleigh had gone to other clubs!! Brian sidled up to me one day and asked me to take the names of anyone who came to train with us and the next thing I knew I was a football manager! Then as if by magic, along the players came. Just in time to be registered as a team. And what a team! As it was our first season together and in truth we had no idea how things would pan out, we stepped gently into the North League. That was where the gentleness stopped! Thanks in the main to the great training from Andy, who became assistant manager and the boys’ coach and John who is assistant coach, they started to knit together well and left to develop naturally to start with, they found their own strengths which they and Andy have put to great use. So much so that we finished top of the division and are promoted next season!!! Harrison Pitt – Goalkeeper Harrison started the season playing half the match in goal and half in defence but it soon became apparent that he had the most amazing goalkeeping skills. He has been complimented on his skills by opposing managers, even though he kept their goals out!! Elliot Speed – Centre Back Elliot has quickly established himself as the rock of the defence. He is a determined and gritty player. Tackling and clearing the ball well, he has saved the side from some tight spots. He is also the powerful corner taker of the team. Ryan O’Leary – Left Back Ryan was fairly new to football when he joined the team and he is now a strong part of a solid defence and has a great throw-on as well. Ryan always has a smile on his face and has worked hard to improve his skills. Keep up the good work. Rhys Cousins – Left Back Rhys’ confidence on the football field has grown immensely since joining the team. He has a great knack of running the

  • pposing attackers down the pitch, leaving them nowhere to go. He has also developed a huge kick which helps get the

ball where we want it!!! Jamie Fletcher – Right Back Jamie has been a consistent player in defence, always watching the ball closely and getting himself where he needs to be. Jamie sneaks into the line of attack without them noticing, to nick the ball away just in time. David Watts – Right Back David is the newest member of the team who has quickly established himself as a keen and enthusiastic player. On occa- sions he has been asked to play in other positions and has always done really well covering them, (even scoring 3 goals for the side). Always determined to take the ball from the opposition! Joshua James – Left Midfield Joshua works hard in midfield, never frightened to tackle or run with the ball. His passing deliveries are getting stronger as he learns to read the game. Joshua has scored some great goals too (16 for the side), and his speed down the pitch sur- prises many! James Barnes – Central Midfield James is a solid midfielder who has gained confidence as the season has progressed. He has scored some wonderful goals (17 for the side) and his passing too, is contributing to the positive outcomes of the games. Jack Renew – Right Midfield Jack is the ‘powerhouse’ of the team. Outstanding in attack and equally as devastating in defence, he is the top scorer of the Pumas having scored 36 goals this season! Jack is also improving his passing skills which will Well done to all the players for their hard work and commitment. Thank you to all the parents who have come along to help and cheer the boys on. It was always going to be tough! 3rd place is a great achievement; the standard of football at such a young age is outstanding. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride this season. We spent some time at the top of table early in the season then slipped into second spot only to be overtaken in the last match of the season by Trinity. What a great game of football it was though. The boys played some great football taking 6 points from last year’s win- ners, and after a humbling 5:1 defeat at the hands of the eventual league winners, Catholic, the boys came back with a spirited performance to earn a 1:1 draw at the return match. Again the boys have given 100% in training and in matches and it has been great to see them progress through the season. Their standard of football has been impressive and some of the goals outstanding. They have been a pleasure to train and both Neil and I have enjoyed working with them. Thanks to all of you who have given their time and energy to support the team throughout the season. WELL DONE BOYS......... U9 Tigers

This season was always going to be a challenge for our Tigers following their promotion to Division 2. The Boys faced mainly stronger Lions teams, so training was more important than ever. Watching the boys apply these skills to their league matches was extremely rewarding for Simon and I. The final league position did not reflect the way the team played each individual game with only 16 points sepa- rating the top and bottom places. The boys are aware of the mistakes which cost us games. These are valuable lessons and their experience gained will be taken through to next season where we will also aim to better our final league position. One big highlight of the season was the cup game against Southend Manor Tigers which saw the boys win a thrilling game 7-6 on penalties. Was this going to be our route to silver ware? Sadly not, we were knocked out by eventual finalists Forest Glade Lions during a Monsoon ! Finally, congratulations again to the boys who have reached 50 appearances. Birchy – Solid as ever with great saves throughout the season. 19 – 2007/08 Appearances 1 Goal / 47 Total Appearances 1 Total Goal Liam – Improving all the time, keeps things simple and not afraid to put the boot in. 17 – 2007/08 Appearances 2 Goals / 46 Total Appearances 6 Total Goals Charlie - Played well along side Liam in defence and scored probably the goal of the season. 19 - 2007/08 Appearances 3 Goals / 52 Total Appearances 3 Total Goals Harry – Reliable when asked to play in either defence or midfield. 19 – 2007/08 Appearances 0 Goals / 49 Total Appearances 1 Total Goal Lewis S – Created many goal opportunities with his excellent passes. 19 – 2007/08 Appearances 3 Goals / 51 Total Appearances 5 Total Goals Josho – Probably his best season. U9 Leopards

D Despite the loss of a key player from previous seasons, the Leopards have shown tremendous determina- tion in completing the season and achieving a respectable mid table position. Not only have the boys had to contend with the loss of Christopher Olivares, who we wish well in his pur- suit for a higher standard of football, they have had to play in a variety of new positions without the solid performances that Christopher used to provide us with in the central midfield role. This however has given every Leopard the opportunity to have equal match time and more time on the ball which will undoubtedly aide their longer term development. The lads have equipped themselves admirably since the mid season changes, and it is extremely satisfy- ing and rewarding for all of us to see these lads try new skills on the football pitch and it is great to see the boys improve each week. As long as they keep listening, battling and working hard for each other, they will soon get the results that they deserve. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly holding Southend Manor Lions to a cup draw, bravely going

  • ut on penalties after a titanic battle.

Our thanks go to the parents, grandparents and all for your support and encouragement over a difficult season and for those that have helped with refereeing, putting up goals etc . However, the biggest thanks must go to the boys for giving us all some special moments that we can all look back on over the season with great pride. Well done to all the boys. U9 Pumas

There is little doubt in my mind that this has been a highly successful season for the Under 9 Pumas, not only in terms of team results but more importantly, in terms of all the boys’ overall team and individual develop- ment over the last 12 months. In results terms, we finished a very credible third place in Divi- sion 4 and at one point were actually well in contention for the second place spot only to be ultimately edged out by Hambro Colts Tigers. In my own view however, finishing just below the promotion positions is actually a good position for us as going forward next season, we should now have the confidence to per- form well again in this division next season without a n over burden of expectation or trepida- tion which might have resulted from being promoted up to a higher league. We will need to continue to develop though as there will be strong teams coming up from Div 5 as well as the relegated teams from Division 3 ….so no resting on our laurels! As mentioned above, it is the ‘bigger picture’ development of the ‘team’ that has really impressed me this

  • season. All the boys have understood the roles they have been given within the team play for any particular

match and have successfully fulfilled those roles for the greater benefit of the team rather than the individual. Whilst we may not have any 30 goal-a–season ‘superstars’, what we DO have is a stable squad of 10 (including Jacob Nicholls who trains with us) enthusiastic and attentive footballers who are ALL making posi- tive progress in their development. I also believe that all of the boys have a good perspective with regards to their football. They seem to love playing it, watching it and also attending both matches and training. They also listen well and take on board instruction….well most of the time anyway! Which brings me to the man they listen to for the coaching…I again want also give a huge thanks to Darren Brookes who is the person primarily responsible for the boys footballing development. The fact that the Pu- mas are a well organised, well respected and tight knit footballing unit is a direct reflection of Darren’s excel- lent coaching methods. I believe Darren has the respect of all the boys and if they stick with him through until eventual 11 a side transition, they certainly won’t go far wrong. Thanks Darren and let’s do it again next sea-

U10 Lions

At the beginning of the season we looked at our previous two mid-table finishes and knew that with the talent and ability of this team, with the right attitude and application we could really push on and improve. I am very proud of the team as although we were literally pipped in the last two games, we were top of the league for not less than 95% of the season. We finished one point behind eventual winners Leigh Ramblers Tigers, a good side who will be promoted with us into the top league for 11-a-side next year. It has been a pleasure to manage this team as not only do the personalities make it so enjoyable, the football we have played in most if not all of the games, even in defeat has been nothing short of excellent, hence why we were the leagues top scorers. It’s with this in mind that I would like to say a very big thank you to the players who have shown me a desire to both learn and improve, make sure you use your achievements of this season as a strong base to push on from for the seasons ahead. Stephen Lynch (GK) – Well done Steven you have more than played your part this season coming up with great saves at vital times to make sure more often than not the result was a positive one for us. Excellent Steven Joe Ives (DF) – Joe has had another good season as he continues to make the art of defending appear easy. Joe is strong, tackles well, but also can play football and likes to where possible pass his way out of trouble, this gives us the opportunity to build from the back and utilise the other good passers in the team. Well Done Joe Sam Murphy (MF) – A very clever player, Sam has played central midfield this year and has help to pull the strings for us, Sam does not shirk a tackle either and is often helping the defence to thwart an attack. Going forward he combines coolness in possession, good touch and vision, which help him to beat a player as well as find that killer pass and goal. Superb season Sam Max Bailey (MF) – Max is a joy to manage, his attitude is spot on hence why he is our captain. I took the deci- sion to play him out on the right this season as his pace, work rate and skill could be used to great effect. Max has not disappointed as he has ripped sides apart with his dribbling, passing and goal-scoring exploits. Max is

  • ur 3rd top scorer and 2nd in the assists chart. Well done Max

Daniel Grainger (MF) – Dan has shown real commitment to learn and improve and I am extremely pleased with the season he has had. Dan is a natural athlete with pace and trickery, he is a real threat scoring vital goals and creating chance for others. Excellent season Dan Henry Reade (DF/MF) – Henry has great pace and strength and gives good protection to the defence. His foot- balling skills have really started to show now and because of this he is more confident in his ability. His passing is very good and he has not only created but scored goals as well. In my book Henry achieved the assist of the season, he’ll no what I’m on about! Well Done Henry Luke Sullivan (S) – We said last season that playing up front on his own Luke had to learn the other parts of that role, holding the ball up, defending from the front, creating space, etc. This season he has done all that and much more, add in his goal scoring and you can see how good a season he has had. Luke is our top goal-scorer this season as well as top of the assist chart having involvement in no fewer than 30 goals. Say no more! George Vile (MF) – George joined at the beginning of the season and settled quickly and to good effect. George is very competitive with a strong will to win. He’s predominately played on the left of midfield utilising his very powerful and accurate shot which has made him our 2nd top scorer. George has also played in defence as he tackles well and makes life tough for attacking players. Super stuff George Aaron Zimmer (MF) – Aaron took the decision to join the tigers at Christmas time and I’d like to thank him for his contribution to our season. Special mention to Jo Murphy who since we started has organised birthday presents for the boys as well as all

  • ther social matters and Martin Reade of Michael Clarke designs who has been our shirt sponsor since we start-
  • ed. In particular a big thank you to Steve Sullivan who more than assists me in the running of the team, a great

coach as well as a good friend who has the ability to make the learning side of football fun for all the team. Thanks also to the parents for their continued support. Kris Ives (Manager) P W D L F A 20 (L) 11 6 3 49 27

After the disappointments of the previous season that saw us relegated, this season has seen us regain our confidence and our results have definitely improved. We have certainly seen the standard of the teams we are playing improve in this division and it is fair to say some teams have gained success through bringing in players. Scott joined us at the start of the season and has settled in well with the other boys. On our day we can match any team in the division but we are not consistent enough which is why we have finished mid table. Last year we found goals hard to get, but this year we have done better up front. Our defence this year has been more intermittent with some great dis- plays and some not so good, but I firmly be- lieve the boys will learn from this and we will improve next year. One area we have reached the pinnacle of the game is in fair play league as we are the proud holders of the South East Essex Mini Soccer U9 fair play winners which was voted for by every team in our league. This was a great achievement and is a testament to how our kids play football. A fantastic result lads.!!! This was our last year in Mini Soccer and I will certainly miss it, it seems like yesterday when we sat down for the first time with the kids left over from the Lions selection and formed a team. You expect to watch your own child getting older, wiser and stronger but for the last 4 years Neil and myself have had 9 children every weekend we have watched grow. As we go into next season with new players joining I would like to wish Bradley all the best and I hope he will keep training with us because you are with all of your friends and training would not be the same without the famous BRADLEY BELTER. Well done to Aaron Zimmer and Sam Beckett who have been patient all year train- ing with us, look forward to you joining up next season. The boys have been a pleasure to work with all season and when you see them congratulating each other on good goals or saves it makes the effort all worthwhile. I would like to thank Lime Packaging for their continued sponsorship of the team shirts and Nova Innovene for their tracksuit sponsorship. Finally I would like to thank the parents on behalf of Neil, Paul, Dave and myself for their support and under- standing throughout the year I hope we can count on this for next season. Neil Calamity Kirsh (Assistant Manager) Now nearly a level two coach he has bought lots of new training methods to the training field works tirelessly to improve the kid’s skills. Neil still struggles to get to the bar and his dress sense has improved he is now taken to wearing one (yes a dress). Dave Imelda Marcos Hayton (Head Coach) Always to be seen in shorts even on the coldest days which goes to show fake tan does keep your legs warm. Great work again Dave we will miss you next season. Paul Lord Quick (Goalkeeping Coach) Paul has worked hard again with Martin and has got further involved with the outfield players. Any chance of the butler and gamekeeper running the line for us next season ? Well done lads and keep enjoying your football. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Under 10 Tigers. T The last season for the boys at mini soccer in a league in which they have managed to hold their own. Most games being won or lost by the odd goal and the difference between finishing 3rd place or 9th place separated by just a few points. All the players have continued to develop and hopefully will be in a good position with their acquired skills to compete successfully at eleven a side. It has been a real pleasure to train and manage all of the boys and feel that they have enjoyed their football at mini soccer and hope they can carry their enthusiasm onto the next level. James Bundy- Goalie who has made some fine saves this year. Matthew Naylor- A solid season between the sticks and also scored goals when out on field. George Chapman- Great passer of the ball played in most positions this season. Charlie Moyes- Has performed successfully at the back Jamie Coates- Switched to playing up front this year and is top scorer. Angelo Manor- A steady season playing on the left or right of midfield. Daniel Paynter- Tricky winger played left midfield. Beau Simpson- Played in midfield or attack has contributed with important goals this year. Harry Higgins- Another strong season in the centre of midfield. Patrick Mills- Switched to defence and has adapted very well. Here’s hoping that all the boys go to eleven a side with enjoyment and success and continue the friendships that they have made. A few thank you’s: To Paul and Mark for this season and the throughout mini soccer, especially with the putting up and taking down of goals on cold Sunday mornings. To Liz and Lynn for all of their help and having to listen to Paul and myself moaning. To Mark Simpson for our sponsorship. Champions!!! With the team only having been quickly formed in July 2007, and with most of the boys not having played in a football team before, what a fantastic first season these lads have had. There was no time for any pre- season tournaments; it was a case of quickly getting to know positions and how to play as a team. What’s even more extraordinary is how they achieved so much under the guidance of the coaching staff!!! Between us had no previous experience of managing/coaching a football team, and we couldn’t even get the hang of erecting the goals until half way through the season!! To finish as “Possible Champions” of Division 7 is a remarkable achievement, something that all the boys should be truly proud of. Each and every boy has worked so hard this season, and on the back of some very hard fought (and some not so hard fought) performances this season, they certainly deserve the title of “Champions”. Each player improved as the weeks went by and we can only imagine how good they might be if they actually paid a little more attention during training on Saturdays!!!! Josh Thorn – Goalkeeper Absolute nightmare trying to keep him quiet during important team talks, but a fearless keeper between the sticks. Kept us in many a game with his outstanding saves. Stephen Crocombe - Defender Great sound effects when kicking the ball!! A true master of the long

  • throw. Solid at back and scored some very good goals from set pieces.

Callum Barker – Defender Excellent partner to Stephen at the back & when Callum decided to go on a run, nobody stopped him!! Edward Taylor – Midfield/Defender Finally found the right position for Ed. A right little terrier and was always nipping at the heels of opponents. Alfie Wood – Right Wing The “drag-back king”. Often lost the opposition with his trade-mark wizardry. Even his “old man” has been trying (unsuccessfully I might add) to copy him. Ollie Birrell – Midfield The Midfield General. Good ball-winner and sprayed the ball about well. Scored some very important goals but needs to work on those dodgy celebrations!! Ryan Lambert - Left Wing Always got a pattern in his hair! Good on the ball and has a absolute peach of a left foot. Scored hat-full of excellent goals. Adam McDonnell – Striker (C) Don’t be fooled by his size – as they say, size isn’t important!! He’s quick and when he’s running with that ball, opponents beware!! Scored a number of cracking goals through-

  • ut the season.

Jordon Terry – Striker Worked hard up front and grew stronger as season progressed. Massive cheer when his first goal went in – we never thought we’d see the day!! Well-done Jordon. Bradley Reader – All Rounder Worked hard for the team in all positions. Regretfully decided to leave us midway through the season to pursue other interests. A big thank goes to all the parents (particularly our wives for putting up with the constant talk of football) and all the hardened supporters that turned up each week, come rain or shine, to shout the team on. Our thanks also to Karen Shields for doing all our paperwork, and a particular thank you to Alan Webb for kindly refereeing our home games. We hope all the boys (and supporters) have enjoyed the season and we look forward to “Big Boys” football next season. Paul, Dean & Gerry

Last season’s success of winning 2006/2007 mini soccer league, brought us into 11a side football. No one knew how we would fair, with a bigger pitch 30 minutes each way, more players and the dreaded offside rule .Nevertheless we arranged many friendlies , which saw us play a few teams above our age group. Surprisingly they coped very well, with their new surroundings and winning many games quite comprehensively , this was highlighted in a Rochford tournament, where we were placed in the under 12’s section and ending up winning it. This brought us nicely up to the new season, with our confidence high we were raring to go. The first game of the season saw us draw a match we should have won easi- ly ,with this we carried on in the same fashion struggling sometimes to win games drawing and losing silly games. WELCOME TO WORLD OF 11 A SIDE FOOTBALL… Although we found it quite tough this season , we have finished a respectable third. I think with more work and increasing the boys technical abilities, we shall do very well for next season. I would like to thank Gary Cole, Phil Ashkuri and Tony Long for keeping me going through the good and bad times also Georgie Long for being the treasurer, and All the parents who contributed to running the line and supporting their boys with nothing but whole hearted enthusiasm. Firstly a massive thank you to the boys, parents and grandparents for making the season so enjoyable. Although it has been com- petitive and on occasions tense, the boys have al- ways played football in the right spirit. The parents have been supportive and vocal but always in a posi- tive way. Well done to eve-

  • ryone. The season itself

has been a great success

  • n the field. Whilst losing
  • ut on the divisional title on

goal difference was tough

  • n the boys, (and manag-

ers!), finishing 2nd and gain- ing promotion was a great achievement considering we only had 6 players after last season ended and we were very close to calling it a day. Whilst I do sympa- thise with the people who say there is too much competitive football too young and that it gets in the way of technical development, we have had a string of great games this season that will leave a lasting impression on the boys and will teach them a great deal, not just in footballing terms but also in their personal development. There were numerous memorable games but the 4-3 win against a very strong Catholic Utd team is probably the highlight: Having only been able to field 10 players we had played superbly all game yet were still trailing 3-2 with only 10 minutes remaining. We then not

  • nly managed to force the equaliser, but Joss Pountney, in true Roy of the Rovers style, and playing his first ever

game in Junior football hit a screamer to give us all 3 points. The game against the eventual champions Hawkwell was another that sticks in the mind and was possibly our best all round display of the season: Although winning 4- 3 we were always in front and found a new level in our play. It was also a memorable game as it was the first time Steven Mead failed to score when starting and for Joe Mackenzie making a string of great tackles, none of which were fouls! On to the last game of the season and with everyone knowing we needed to win and win well we maybe felt the pressure for the first time and found ourselves 3-0 down at half time. A quick goal at the start of the second half saw the momentum change and we were then camped in the Wickford half for the remainder of the game. A Rory Taylor special from outside the box and a brace from Steven Mead put us level before Dylan Galligan with a crisp strike and Rory again this time direct from a corner sealed the win. Whilst it is of course a team game I just wanted to mention a couple of individuals. Firstly James Button has done fantastically well between the sticks, having never played before this season he has played with great heart and confidence and has the perfect mix for a goalkeeper; 1 part mad 2 parts brave! Well done James. Secondly, Steven Mead; the supply form the boys has been great but to score 45 goals in 20 games including 10 hat-tricks is a great achievement, well done Steven. Finally a big thank you to Steve Davies for his support as assistant manager and also to Phil Alone and Cheryl Taylor for helping to organise the finances. Also thanks to Phil for being linesman. I’m sure Phil is happy to share the duty if anyone fancies a go!! Enjoy the summer and roll on next season. The Team: Oakley Brown, Richard Carey, Jack Chitty, Ben Clark, Jack Harvey, Ryan Holton, Nich-

  • las Latham, Lawrie Mayor, Anthony Pegg, Chris Punt, Charlie Richer, James Sanders, Jake

Speed and Jack Vail. This is the first year of 11-a-side football. It has taken a little while for the lads to get use to the size of the pitches where the passing has had to be stronger, running with the ball restricted more so they can get their breath back and playing in positions and as a team has become so much more important. Nevertheless, we have played well and at times excelled ourselves, with the lads showing their ability to take in the new game and pulling off some fabulous victories against some very good teams. We did slow down after the Christmas break and this is something we can improve on with the commitment I know the boys have. A very big ‘Well done!’ to you all. I very much welcome the new lads, being Oakley Brown, Chris Punt, Charlie Richer and Jake Speed, and thank them for their contributions. They have settled in very quickly and all of them are a benefit to the team. Thank you to all the boys for a sterling effort; to Paul Richer for his support in training and managing matches; to Dave Carey for his help with goalkeeper training; also to Michael Vail. Thank you to those who have offered words of encouragement and support during the season. In our 18 league games we have won 8, drawn 5 and lost 5. We scored 50 goals for and conceded 34. We came 5th in the league. We must continue to get stronger and work hard for one another in the following season. I want the lads to bond as a team and as friends for a great future together. I am confident that we can continue to work together and produce some good results. Colin Mayor Your Most Wonderful Manager

Well, this was certainly a sea- son of two halves. Having had back to back promotions over the last two years we just were- n’t sure what to expect as we entered Division ‘A’. It was a shame that we lost two boys from the team just prior to the season starting, but we were very fortunate to gain some great signings to take their place with both Reece Coleman and Ben Ransome becoming very influential players within the team. The season started well with a win in our first match

  • we were top of Division ‘A’!!!

The second match brought us back down to earth with what turned out to be our biggest loss of the season against Catholic United. This was fol- lowed the following week with a 5-5 draw against Chalvedon - no-one said that this year was going to be boring!! The season continued up and down in this way with just 1 win and 2 draws to show from our first 7 matches. At this point we made another great find when we signed Jack Smith to complete our team. At the half-way stage we were unfortunate to find our- selves languishing second from bottom in the league. The boys did not let this get them down, they were playing some great football and working as a team with huge determination - it was just unfortunate that the results were not going our way. The second half of the season was somewhat different to the first half. Our return match against Catholic proved the turning point. With the most hard thought and memorable match of the season came a great 2-1 win. The boys continued in this vein, which also included doing the double over Trinity – a team that we had never beaten before. The second half culminated with the stats of 4 wins, 2 draws and just 1 loss. This meant that we finished 3rd, which is a fantastic achievement at such a high level of football. The boys thoroughly deserved this as they have really gelled and have become a team to be feared. We also made it to the quarter finals of the cup – which was by far the best that we have ever achieved. This has been a great year for the boys and one that they should be proud of. It is with sadness that we are saying goodbye to 4 boys that have been with Rayleigh since they were 5 years old. I would like to say a big thank you to Jack Scrivener, Bradley Hughes, James Horsburgh and Edward Hine for all their hard work and commitment over the past six years and I wish them every success for the future. I would like to thank Ian & Wayne for all their hard work and the coaching com- mitment that they have put in over the season. I would also like to thank Colin Lander and Paul Coleman for carrying out the majority of the linesman duties between them over the year - this certainly made my job a whole lot easier. Thanks must also go to Gerry McCarthy for the entertaining match reports posted on the Rayleigh Boys website. We have learnt a great deal over this season and can now look forward to the next where I am confident that we will be pushing for promotion into the Premiership. Well done to all the boys – I am really proud to be your manager. On the back of a very encouraging opening first season at 11 a side last year it was felt appropriate to move up a Division and it is clear this was wholly justified given the way we have performed. Again the never say die attitude was evident for all to see as our philosophy of playing open attacking football was once again adopted. Whilst this at times left us vulnerable at the back it is clearly the way the boys want to play and the approach best suited to the team. Special mention to Jack Goddard and Chas Burlock who have battled back from injury and whilst unavailable have always shown their dedication to the team by attending matches whilst they were unable to play. Also congratulations to Ollie Lloyd and Andrew Hewett on passing the 100 caps mile-

  • stone. There were many memorable moments in a most enjoyable season and I am sure the boys

have learnt a lot and will be back again next season once again challenging at the right end of the

  • table. At times we have been down to the bare bones as a squad but with at least 3 new signings for

next year we will continue to go from strength to strength. It only leaves me to thank my assistant manager Steve Lloyd and my wife Maria who between them have once again put off the requirement

Looking back I believe it was the right step and I think the majority of the boys have developed as players this season. I said at the start of the season that our aim was to stay in the Prem and the boys have managed

  • that. I think our best performance was the 2-1 win

against Concord towards the end of the season closely followed by the 5-0 defeat at the hands of Leigh Ramblers. I know the scoreline is not very flattering but the effort that day was fantastic and we created twice as many chances as them. As we face another year in the Prem I hope the boys can rise to the challenge and give maximum

  • effort. I think the effort made in training is becom-

ing more and more important as the boys get

  • lder and there fitness levels will make a big dif-

ference. I have invested a lot of time this year in improving myself as a coach and this has meant me not be available for some training sessions but this should pay dividends next season (assuming my back holds out!). If coaching levels are improved and the boys want to learn and work hard we should be able to improve further again next year. Despite taking some heavy defeats this year there have been some great performances and the boys deserve praise for their efforts. It's very easy to stand on the sidelines and tell them where they are going wrong and what they could do better but if the boys are playing to the best of their ability and giving 100% then you can't ask for more. I would say that the ma- jority of boys fall into this category but unfortunately not all ! I would like to finish by sincerely thanking the boys for an enjoyable year. What a season! We came out firing all guns at the start of the season with a 3-0 win at Catholic. But just after Christmas four boys went to pastures new. Games had to be suspended whilst we recruited new players – Steve Sexton put a lot of time and effort into finding new players to keep the team together – which the re- maining boys and parents thank you for Steve. Unfortunately Steve took and early retirement, and I know the boys were going to miss him – but we have soldier on. So we started again! Bringing up the boys confidence; working on repositioning; and working on building team spirit. It hasn’t been a fruitful season, but the boys have worked really hard under extreme conditions, playing the majority of games with just 9-10 players, sometimes coming off exhausted but happy, sometimes exhausted but deflated, but they came back the next week for more! But I think we can all agree that watch- ing each match the boys have played, they have tried their very best- but some were not so good, but every-

  • ne has their bad days, even the best teams – some they have deserved not to lose. They have had nothing

but praise from the opposing Managers who have said what great lads they are – and you are – you should all be proud of yourselves – and when you play football you play good football – you kept going, well done for giving it your all. 1. Oliver – started the season as our left back – spot on defender – spent a little stint in mid – and then took the hardest position of all, goalie – and what a brilliant goalie he has turned out to be, receiving praise from more than one opposing manager. 2. Harry Davies – started the season in his normal position as right mid-field – I have seen this boy’s confidence, maturity and determination develop over this season – he is now our fantastic right back. 3. Damien – tall and focused has done another fantastic job as our centre back – taken fantastic free kicks – back of the net – done! 4. Josh – one of our newest members – his confidence has come on leaps – he appears from no- where sometimes, and clears that ball of the goal line – how does he do that! 5. Elliot – the other of our newest defenders on left back – again I have watched his confidence come on leaps – does a good job of turning that ball around back to mid-field. 6. Harry Walker – a little bit of our all rounder – started life in defence – come up to mid – bit of wing – bit of upfront – quick legs, shear determination, and pure guts. 7. Ben – took a little time to find his position – just needed a good confidence boost – but is now our second fantastic attacking/defending mid-fielder. Well done. 8. Dean – “Deano” – when he gets out of that easy chair – beware! Fantastic attacking/defending mid-fielder – watches the game – loads of strength and determination. 9. Jack – left mid-field – lacks a little confidence in himself – but when he is focused – his passes can make a winner – scored a great goal earlier in the season – it’s about believing in yourself!

  • 10. Oliver – the last of our new members – working in mid-field or just behind the front man – nice

technique – I think there is more to come from him yet!

  • 11. James – started the season in his normal left mid-field – speedy winger – has set up, and scored

some great goals – took position of striker half way through season – not a selfish player with the ball – superb crosser.

  • 12. Cameron – happy to play any position needed from him – enthusiastic – we need to work a little

more on his confidence, although I am sure that will come with the more games he will play. I would like to say a huge thank you to Andy for stepping forward to help me with the boys, not just in training but at the matches too. Also I would like to extend many thanks to Brian & Trudy for doing all the e-mails for me. Thanks also to the parents for hanging in there. But I think the biggest thank you goes to the boys who have kept going through very difficult times – I am proud of you, your parents should be, but most of all be proud of yourselves – believe in yourselves – each

  • ne of you is unique – here’s hoping we can keep the team together – move forward – but above all have

fun! Karen Smale

At the time of writing this report we still have 3 games to play and it does not seem possible that another season draws to a close. Following the success of the previous 2 seasons and the return to Division A I was able to sigh 3 new boys to the squad, with hope that we would be able to hold our own back in this division it has proved to be much more difficult. I will say that the boys have gone out and tried their hardest, while not always getting the rewards that they deserved. Some unfortunate firsts did happen along the way, Jason fracturing his wrist at a tournament while about to score a hat trick (Jason’s words). Tim then fractured his elbow in a league game. In the last month our veryfirst booking was picked up by Dom followed closely by Jason collecting 2. We did reach the semi-final of a tournament only to lose 1-0. I would like to extend my thanks to Duncan Ward for his assistance with training, Michael Ox and Colin Lander for running the line. Lastly I would like to thank you all for your support of the boys at the games no matter the weather. Another Season over! We started the season with optimism. We were runners-up in the Catholic Tournament. We were hop- ing for an improvement on last seasons results ( 2 wins , 1 draw). Well we did that. 5 wins and 6 draws. Up until Christmas we were our own worst enemies, by not playing for the whole game. Some of the performances this year have been outstanding, and the final run in to close of season was

  • great. 3 draws and 2 wins.

SO WELL DONE TO ALL YOU BOYS! Lets have more of the same next season! Having lost numerous key players and their coach at the end of last season, things were not looking good for Rayleigh A. The team’s future was secured by the signing of several keen and talented new players to compliment and complete the squad. We welcomed Jordan Fry, Callum Shadbolt, Alex Fuller, Ryan Weeks, Matt Mardell, Tom Poulson, Luke Nicholls and James Bateman who have all become valued mem- bers of Rayleigh Boys. Our newly qualified FA coach Geoff Middleton knew he would have a task ahead of him to get the boys to gel and perform as a team, however his faith in their abilities has been one of the teams strengths this sea- son and his confidence rewarded by some outstanding individual and team performances. We started the season with a run of bad results, and with our first win being discounted when the opposition

  • folded. The turning point in Rayleigh A’s season was ironically during their heaviest defeat this season

where an incredible team spirit emerged for all to see. Following that defeat we went from bottom of the table to challenging for 3rd place in the B division having beaten the divisional champions and the runners up, Rayleigh B in what turned out to be a very exciting season. We said goodbye to Edward Woodford ,and Shane Raffaelli took a sabbatical after Christmas. A key part of Rayleigh A’s upturn in fortune was it’s defensive foundation with Sam Levett outstanding in goal, the superb partnership between Luke Nicholls and Tom Poulson at centre back supported by Trevor Smith, Ray King, Will Cooper and James Heather in the full back positions giving us the 3rd best defence in the division. The Midfield saw a wealth of riches for the coach with Jordan Fry, James Howe, Shane Raffaelli and Tom Cerson all giving fantastic performances on the wings. The centre midfield saw immense competition due to the high quality of play from Captain Callum Shadbolt, Ryan Weeks, Conor Mason and James Bateman. Upfront saw the “Golden Boot” shared (as things stand with one game left to play) between Matt Mardell and Alex Fuller. Honourable mention must go to James Bateman who, had he played a full season for the team, would also have challenged for the Golden Boot. Geoff and myself would like to say thank you to Graham Levett for his continued support running the line, sponsoring the kit, standing as referee officially and unofficially and frequently in the face of adversity. Thanks also to Mark Fry for providing the tracksuits for the squad, and to every parent and supporter for their fantastic commitment and support throughout the season including everyone that has run the line for us, not forgetting our faithful assistant to the coach, Joe Gibbons. Some memorable moments of the season include Matt Mardell’s super goal against Cornard United and James Bateman’s spectacular strike against Shore, the 3-0 hammering of Champions Great Wakering and the magnificent win against title contenders Rayleigh B, number amongst many highlights. The team look forward to next season and the new challenges that will bring. Catherine Cooper

WELL DONE BOYS At the start of the season we set ourselves a goal to win promotion. The squad was strengthened with the return of Sam Taylor, Jake Smerdon, who had both played for the team before, and Josh Mann, who had rejoined the club. Glen Humphrey, Jared Sims, Matthew Taylor and Luke Vincent were also added to the squad. Promotion was achieved with three games to go by beating Great Wakering the league leaders putting us top. But after losing the next game against Rayleigh A 2-1, beating Trinity C 13-0 and Trinity B 10-1 we finished Runners Up. UNDEFEATED IN EUROPE At Easter we the squad to Holland unfortunately the weather was not very kind to us. Saturday’s tourna- ment was cancelled, as was the friendly on Sunday. The Travel Company managed to arrange some fixtures for Saturday. In the morning we played Zwaluwen U18 (Holland) in a 40 minute game drawing 2- 2 with goals from Matt Taylor and Eddie Proctor. In the afternoon we again played Zwaluwen U18 (25+7) drawing 2-2 with goals from Sam Taylor and Jamie Boyce and Bessacarr U15 (Doncaster) (25) winning 3

We started the season full of expectation following an excellent run of results at the end of last season. However, some unexpected defeats early in the season quickly made us realise we were playing in a tough division against some very capable teams. It was our lack of confidence in front of goal that pre- vented us achieving the success we expected, for while we have one of the best defensive records in the division, we have scored the least number of goals of any of the teams with only 19 to our credit. In December we welcomed Chris Price, Ryan Saggers and Josh Wagstaff to the squad, which strengthened a midfield beset with injuries. After a couple games, the new boys had settled into the squad and confidence returned to our game. The New Year saw us getting the results we deserved, but with our season limited to only 14 league games we were unable to capitalize on our new found suc-

  • cess. However, we now have a very strong, cohesive team and expectations are again high for next

season. We say farewell to Daniel Cole at the end of this season who is leaving to pursue other interests. I would like to thank him for his commitment to the team and wish him every success for the future. My thanks go to Lee Olley, our coach, for the enthusiasm and motivation he generates within the team, to Phil Wright for his valuable support on the training ground, to Tim Mahoney for valiantly run- ning the line again this season and to Debbie Chitty for being the team secretary. As we look forward to our final season with Rayleigh Boys, I am sure the hard work and commitment shown by all those connected with the team will bring the rewards we deserve. Russell Carter

Total games/goals for club including 1st team and other RBFC Teams This has been the hardest season I have had to manage the team, and we have struggled all season to get 11 players to play for many reasons. I was criticised last season when I signed 16 boys for having too many, I signed 14 boys this season and wish I had gone for 16 again. We welcomed two new players to the team this season, Tom Webb and Mat- thew Oram, but Matthew left after only one match, also James Evans has only played 3 matches due illness. So we only had a 12 man squad. We started well with three straight wins, scoring 19 goals, but then strug- gled as we consistently played games with just 10 players. We went out the cup in the first round, to Ashing- don A, in a very close match. I think we would have finished higher than the 9th place in the league if we had had a full team for each game. Well done to Jack Leavy and Tom Webb who both played in every game of the season, both having very good seasons. A special thanks to Thomas Byford, John Rankin-Maclean, Nicky Cox and Jamie Wooller who have played for me in every one of my 9 seasons as manager.
