Chairman’s Report

The 2008-09 Season has been an historic season for RBYFC in many ways. In May 2008 after two years of hard work by many members of the club, Rochford District Council decided to keep the land behind the leisure centre in Rawreth, to be controlled and hired

  • ut by themselves for use as football pitches, ignoring our proposals to manage this at no

burden to the tax payers whilst involving the local community in the decisions we would

  • make. This was yet another kick in the teeth for the club and seriously brings into question

the commitment of our local authority to a club that gives so much to the community. On a brighter note the Club have sourced a piece of land at Old London Road opposite the Chichester Hotel which will potentially give us five 11 a side pitches and three mini soc- cer pitches, these combined with the three mini’s already at Rayleigh Sports and Social will be ample to accommodate our thirty four teams and leave room to expand further if

  • required. We can hopefully get toilet and refreshment facilities over there in the future and

if we work the land properly with all of your support we can improve the drainage giving the kids something decent to play on. The most important part of this is we will have a place to call home instead of being nomadic across Rayleigh. Like most things it seems it is not all a bed of roses as the field is green belt so we have to apply for planning permission, which is not being helped by a couple of ‘nimby neigh- bours’, but lets hope the councillors on Rochford and Rawreth parish council support us in turning a green field in to an amenity for 400 local children. They are supporting 800 new houses on green belt in Rayleigh and Rawreth so surely they will support eight football pitches? This year has seen unprecedented growth in our club with our first ever Cougars team formed at Under 7 and Under 8 with our teams expanding further to thirty four. A lot of this has been achieved by the hard work of many Committee members. For the coming year we are looking to increase fund raising within the club to support the equipment re- quired at Chichester and more importantly in the current economic climate not to increase registration fees. In my four years as Chairman we have not increased our registrations which is a record I am truly proud of. We as a club have been subjected to the same cost

  • f living increases as yourselves but sound management of our accounts by Margaret

Cook and Clare Rankin Maclean and the funds raised from the quiz and comedy nights, the continued support we get from kit sponsors and the 100 Club all helps to keep the reg- istrations at the same level. We will review in May at our AGM the levels of registrations but I hope we can keep them the same for another year or two but a lot will depend on the support we get for our fundraising events. Some local clubs are already charging double

  • ur registrations.

This year has seen two new members to the committee Karen Hicks (Mini Soccer Secre- tary) and Shane Bird, their enthusiasm and efforts are already being seen within the club. Whilst on the subject of the Committee, I would like to thank all the Committee members for their support with keeping the club running, some of whom do not now have children playing for the club. The committee is the backbone of the club, and we now have a very strong structured committee with a mixture of youth, enthusiasm and experience. (I am

not saying who comes into each category but needless to say the ladies all come under Youth.) I would like to thank the three Managers who’s teams are leaving at Under 16 for all of their efforts over many years .Geoff Middleton (A Team) Colin Norfolk (B Team) and Russell Carter (C Team). It should not be under estimated how hard it is to keep a team together at this age with all the obvious distractions and they have all done it very successfully. Geoff is taking over an-

  • ther younger team, Colin I hope will still carry on as a valued member of the Committee and

Russell hopefully will still keep involved. The good news to this is we have got at least one team carrying on with us to Under 18 so this is a first in recent years and keeps the boys in the club for two more years. Another milestone for this year is the newsletter. Communication is always a problem between so many people and the newsletter I hope gives you information about what is happening within the club, The newsletter has been developed by Neil Kirsh and is sent through to your e-mail on a monthly basis throughout the season. Neil has done a fantastic job with this so please contact us if you do not receive a copy. My final mention is the most important of all, on behalf of everybody in the club I would like to wish Matthew Ridgwell a speedy recovery, Matt is a player in the current under 10 Leopards and was sadly diagnosed with leukaemia last year. Whilst everybody has been enjoying the season Matt has been undergoing extensive chemotherapy, spending long periods away from home in

  • hospital. Matt has fought this disease with the same way he has represented RBYFC with deter-

mination, courage and a smile. Get well soon Matthew we want to see you back in that number 10 shirt from everyone at Ray- leigh Boys YFC. Well done to all the managers, coaches and volunteers throughout the club for their hard work and commitment to their teams and the children. We would not survive without them. Finally, well done to all the children, who have played their hearts out for Rayleigh Boys this

  • year. Remember, win or lose always play fair and respect your opponents, and most of all enjoy

it. Have a great summer, and look forward to a new and even more enjoyable season in the autumn. Martin ______________________________________________________________________________

Nobody really knew what to expect from our first season, but on summary with one game left we are delighted with how the boys have performed. From 14 games we have won 8, lost 6 scoring 34 goals and conceding 19, and I think all would agree that aside from the games against Hawkwell. The other 4 defeats were by 1 goal and could have gone either way. From a coaches point of view myself and Ian have been delighted with how the boys have tried to pass the ball and at times we have seen some really good football considering they are 6 and 7 years old. Even more encouraging is that the boys seemed to have enjoyed every minute of this season. Player profiles: Alex Coleman: With no obvious goalie in the ranks Alex showed some interest in having a go so we threw him in, and his improvement has been a real bonus. Now much braver, more aware and with a stronger kick. Callum Blackaby: Looking like a real top defender, brave, strong and reading the game ex- tremely well. Joe Watson: As strong and brave in the tackle as they come, always listens and tries to put in place in a game what he’s learnt at training. Shane Rowney: Keen, enthusiastic and ever present. Shane is now showing signs of being a real- ly useful defender with no fear of throwing himself into a tackle. Cameron Harris: Always had the strongest kick ever seen in a 6 year old, but over the season really improved technically, helping defensively and scoring goals. Nicholas Clements: Becoming a real strong midfielder, decision making and passing much improved and chipped in with some valuable goals. Joe Thomas: The youngest in the team, but loves training and playing and improving with every game, working hard on making best use of his pace. Charlie Sullivan Great attitude, very skillful, carries the ball as well as anyone and now starting to link up nicely with his teammates. Matthew Wicks Enthusiastic as they come, loves playing. Top goalscorer, bundles of skill and natural ability and gives every team we’ve played something to worry about. Looking ahead to next season, we know it wont be easy but if we can continue improving we’re confident of being a match for anyone. A massive thanks for the support shown by the parents and for the boys for being a pleasure to coach. Ben & Ian

As our first season draws to a close, I would like to commend all

  • f the boys for their hard

work, commitment and enthusiasm that has made it such an enjoyable (most of the time!) experience to coach them. I think it is fair to say that it has been a season of highs and lows. An excellent start (3 wins in our first 3 games) was followed by a run of unlucky defeats against some very good teams, before picking up some good results again over the last

  • month. The team has matured and developed over the course of the season and I look for-

ward to next season with real confidence. We have an excellent squad of players who will

  • nly get better through our match experiences this year.

Mitchell Clulow - Goalkeeper Started the season in midfield before finding his natural position in goal. Brave and enthusi- astic, Mitch is developing into a very good goalkeeper. Matthew Enderson - Defender Has grown into a solid defender with an eye for a goal. Great athleticism, never stops run- ning and has shown massive improvement over the course of the season. Joseph Shields - Defender Has shown great improvement this season and has grown into a solid defender. Strong as an

  • x with great discipline at the back. A very dedicated trainer.

Haiyden Maxwell - Defender An enthusiastic, reliable member of the team. Strong in the tackle with a very competitive nature, has grown in confidence over the course of the season. Tom Couchman - Midfielder Tom has a great attitude and is a great dribbler of the ball. Tough in the tackle, and another who has shown great improvement over the year. Joe Whittaker - Midfielder - Captain The engine room of our team. He never stops running and covers every inch of the pitch during games. An excellent tackler and passer of the ball - Joe has had a great first season. Very mature and a fine captain of the team. Owen Hicks - Midfielder Owen has improved steadily over the course of the season and is starting to show real enthu- siasm for the game. Strong in the tackle (like his Dad!) and always tries his best Joe Lovett - Midfielder A bundle of energy on and off the pitch and is showing all the signs of becoming a great

  • midfielder. Has a great engine and a good all round game.

Brook Wilkins - Striker Has grown in confidence over the season, and is developing into an excellent striker. Loves to dribble with the ball and possesses a great shot. His partnership with Charlie is developing Charlie Else - Striker An excellent first season for Charlie. Has deadly accuracy in front of goal, as shown by his record of 18 goals so far this season. A real match winner. I would like to say a big thank you to Simon, Darren and Brian for all their help, advice and tactical knowledge. It has been great working with you all. Many thanks to all the parents for your continued support and huge enthusiasm this season and a big thank you to our spon- sor, Steve Wilkins. My final thank you must go to my wife, Karen, for taking care of all the admin for the team and putting up with my bad moods when we lose! I couldn’t have done it without her. What a pleasure it has been to share the experience of the boys first season! Along with the U7’s Cougars the whole team but one has come through Footy Tots and Academy Soccer. So having coached them for such a long time (some from the age of 3 years old) I knew the potential of this

  • team. Over the years I have been fortunate to see the boys grow and the development of their core

skill sets (dribbling, passing and shooting). This season they have really grown in stature and some of the football has been breath taking for boys this young. They are not the biggest team and at times have been out muscled. However a ‘never say die attitude’, willingness to work for each other and a determination to stick to our coaching beliefs has seen fantastic rewards. This team from back to front play football, through the midfield out wide and into danger areas. We do not need to leave a lone figure goal hanging on the edge of the opposition penalty area waiting for a big kick over the top. Results have been good, I take responsibility for our three losses (through selection and playing with

  • nly six players available), the boys could not have given more and bounced back in their next
  • games. But development of the boys collectively and individually is most important to me. This

group will move forward because they listen, understand and execute, making them a credit to their parents.

  • NB. At the time of writing, 2 games were still to be played.

Parent’s thanks for all your assistance through the season with the goals, pitch maintenance, getting the boys to matches and training on time, but most important your vocal support on the touchline. Big thanks to John Eagles and Philip Burbidge for your help organising the boys on match days and all the Staff at Academy Soccer. Chris Susans, for taking on the admin for the U7’s Cougars and Dave Huzzey the coaching. This was my first year and I must say it has been extremely enjoyable and fulfilling if not taxing at times! It has also been the first year for the boys as a team, having only played a couple of summer tournaments prior to the season. It has been a joy to see them progress individually and to gel as a team as the games have come and gone. The years results are shown below and all the boys should be proud of their contributions. At this level a full time goal keeper is a real asset but is unusual so I would like to thank all the boys who have volunteered throughout the season to help out in goal. I'd also like to thank Dave Huzzey for all his help, organising and coaching of the boys, Shane Bird for his support, encouragement and reminders when I've forgot to do something! Finally I'd like to thank all the parents for helping out and for their enthusiastic support for all teams, not only ours. Here's looking for- ward to next season. Well done everybody… Chris Susans

We started the season very much like we finished the last, winning our first eight games. The boys look set to keep their almost unbeaten record going, until we came across a very strong side, Leigh Ramblers. The wheels came off for a few games, but then we managed to get back to

  • ur winning ways. Over the course of the season, the team have worked well together, making

them stronger and difficult to beat. What we would say about the team is that we truly believe we are the best footballing side in the

  • division. As a team we have not been blessed with height, but with heart and passion. This is

evident, as our team spirit, sportsmanship and camaraderie is amazingly strong and our competi- tive spirit shines in all matches. They have been together from five years old. In that time they have not only grown as a team but formed firm friendships. This season we are really sorry to be losing Henry to Southend United. As one of our top goal scorers, 15 so far this season, he will be a huge loss to the team. Those long legs and short shorts will be missed. We wish Henry the best of luck with his signing. Our thanks go to our very supportive parents, for their help on match days and at training. With-

  • ut your support, our team would not be as strong as it is. We would also like to say an extra

thanks to Tony for his unbiased refereeing and Michelle for her organisation and running around. Our final and most important thanks goes to the boys, their dedication, hard work and enthusiasm has been a joy to watch. You are a fantastic group of lads and have achieved so much this season. 2 Matches Remaining What a great season we have had! The boys have really knitted together as a team and this has shown in their growing confidence and improved play. Their ball control and passing skills have come on leaps and bounds and they can be really proud of the football they have played this season. On numerous occasions, we as a team, have been complimented on our game and the boys’ sportsmanship on the field, by the opposing team, parents and officials. Alex Davis (Goalkeeper) – Alex joined us at the beginning of this season. As a team we really feel privileged to have gained such a talented keeper. He really has saved the day on a number of occasions! Well done, Alex! Sam Martin (Defence) - Sam has continued to progress since last season. Sam comes alive in matches and is becoming a formidable force in defence. His tenacity and timing are something that the opposing strikers are going to have to learn to deal with. Keep up the good work! Danny Lanning (Def/mid) - Danny is establishing himself as the terrier of the team. He never gives in when there is a ball to be won and is always willing to ‘put himself about’ . His enthusiasm on the field is a pleasure to watch. Keep snapping at them, Danny! Harry Seaden (Def/mid) - Harry is a truly reliable all-rounder. His passion and energy, both during training and matches, often prove to be the foundations on which the team stands. His powerful shots are becoming well known , striking fear into the hearts of the opposition. Keep them firing in Harry! Archie Davies (Striker/def) –Archie scored some important goals for us in the attacking position, and has now settled into a more defensive role, where he is equally as effective. Archie shows spirit on the field of play and has been consistent throughout the season, keep working hard! Daniel James (Midfield) – Daniel has this season, shown maturity in the game beyond his years. He has been a lynchpin in the team, winning tackles and delivering killer passes. His team play has been his outstand- ing feature this season adding another dimension to the side. Great job, Daniel! Zac Wing (Midfield) - Zac covers more ground than most on match day. His speed and energy can be quite breathtaking. He has the ability to ‘appear’ wherever he is needed on the pitch and his determination to win the ball is second to none. Great season, Zac, keep it going!! Charlie Young (Mid/Striker) –Charlie has maintained his form from last season and has proved to be a prolif- ic goal scorer as well as a vibrant midfielder. His ability to deliver the ball from open play or corners has influ- enced many a result. Looking forward to seeing more of the same next season!! Joe Vaufrouard (Striker/mid) – Joe’s confidence has grown this season and it is showing in his football. He is very fluent on the ball, having the ability to go past the opposition easily. He can deliver outstanding balls into the box as well as scoring some vital goals. Well done, Joe! Special thanks this season go to:- Maria for her admin support, Mark and Alan for refereeing and helping out, John Seaden for standing in when we needed him and Phil for being the official team photographer. Thank you also, to the committee members, who keep everything running smoothly with all their hard work. And finally a huge ‘thank you’ to all the parents, grandparents and other family members who have supported the team throughout the season, no matter what the weather! It means a lot to the children. We have now completed our second full season playing together and the boys have clearly improved significantly in all areas of their play. We are fortunate to have a team who are committed as a squad and really enjoy their football. Despite a slow start to the season, when we didn’t record a win until the sixth game, our final record is testament to the effort, commitment and spirit that the boys have shown. The attitude has been brilliant both at training and on game days. The season began with the arrival of our new player Callum Dunmore. He has proven to be an excellent addition as a central midfielder and with no little skill. He has excellent ball control and has probably been our most consistent player. Callum has also played brilliantly in defence when asked, even though we know it’s not his preferred position! We couldn’t have asked for more. Our established goalkeeper Jonathan Travers has performed consistently well and has continued to work hard on his all round skills. A key penalty save from Jonathan early in the season was a turning point in our fortunes after a run of poor results. He enjoys playing in goal and it shows. Edward Mitchell and George Huckfield have continued their solid work in defence showing great disci- pline and some tenacious tackling. Edward is far stronger this year and is linking up well with the mid- field players. Despite rarely crossing the half way line, he deserves equal credit for the teams overall

  • display. George has again enjoyed a fantastic season and can always be relied upon to take his responsi-

bilities seriously. He has launched some excellent counter attacks that have often led to goals for the

  • team. His double clearance late on in the game against Benfleet Youth ensured our victory.

On the left side of midfield, Jamie Kerr has been a constant threat in every game. He now has the confi- dence and strength to go past players and has provided some fantastic balls into the opposition box. He has also been our leading goal scorer and his free kicks have been unstoppable. Several rival coaches have commented on his performance. A real revelation this year. Beside him, Luke Golding enjoyed another good season and covers every inch of the pitch working tirelessly on behalf of the team. He is equally at home in attack or defence and gives 100%. Another committed season from Luke as we have come to expect. Matthew Barnes has grown in stature again this season and has now established himself as a right wing player. Always on hand to keep possession when we need it, Matt has also worked hard

  • n crossing the ball from the wing. His performance in the game at Barleylands in very difficult weath-

er conditions will live long in the memory. James Dennison and Rory Gregory have been our main attacking options again. James has really im- proved his overall play as well as maintaining his instinct in front of goal. Crucially he was on the score sheet twice in our first game of the season to ensure a much needed draw. He is often winning the ball and looking for the decisive pass. Rory has been equally impressive and has started to impose himself

  • n games. He is one of our quicker players and has broken free to score some cracking goals. He under-

stands what is required and has shown great commitment to the team cause. Many Thanks to all the parents for their support. We really appreciate the dedication to get the boys to both training and for the matches. Special thanks to the Dennison family and Les for refereeing our home games. Also special thanks to Andy, Kevin and Jason for helping out with training. The boys have been brilliant to coach this year and genuinely enjoy playing together. Noel / Dave P W D L 19 9 4 6

This report has been written with 2 games of the season remaining, but what a great effort by the boys this year! We kicked off with a 9 – 1 thumping at the hands of a rejuvenated Deaneswood Lions, but have shown incredible spirit to put in some top performances consistently through the season. Arguably, one of the best performances came in the return leg against Deaneswood when we drew 1 – 1 away and were unlucky (according to their manager) not to have won that game. As with last year, I am extremely proud of our team from the boys, to the parents and the coaching team and although we have seen some changes in personnel this season, believe we are well placed to have a real crack at winning our league next year in our first competitive season.. Well done to all the boys of the U8 Pumas which consisted of the following players: Luke Miller - Goalkeeper – 08/09 Appearances: 19 – All time appearances: 37 Luke is really starting to look like a goalkeeper !! He is improving with every game and his kicking is now a powerful team weapon. Luke has shown this year what a valuable member of the team he is and his 3 man of the match performances are testament to this. Ibrahim Haidei – Defender – 08/09 Appearances: 18 – All time appearances: 36 Ibrahim shows great courage in defence playing alongside Harry and has a great knack of clearing the ball up- field and away to safety. He has put in good performances this year and has been awarded man of the match twice. Harry Dell - Defender – 08/09 Appearances: 19 – All time appearances: 37 Harry is the rock of the defence. Always calm and collected but tough tackling. Able to play a cultured ball

  • ut of defence and provides a pivotal link between defence and midfield. Always puts in a performance to be

proud of and has 3 man of the match awards for the season. Nathan Barrtlett – Defender – 08/09 Appearances: 2 – All time appearances: 2 Nathan joined the team mid-way through the season and has trained well with the team. He has a great energy about him and certainly does not lack speed. Nathan has shown he is ready to be registered for the U9 season and we look forward to having him onboard. Billy Buckley – Midfield – 08/09 Appearances: 19 – All time appearances: 37 – Goals: 17 As captain of the team, Billy leads by example! He has a great fighting spirit that never dies and has driven the team on to achieve some of the great results this season, a real bulldog! He has 17 goals from midfield and 5 man of the match performances to his name. Christian Stillabower- Midfield- 08/09 Appearances:18 – All time appearances:19 –Goals: 10 Christian joined the team at the end of last season and has fitted in perfectly. He is lighting fast, with an amaz- ing energy level. Willing to run forward in attack and then sprint back to defend! He has scored 10 goals and has 2 man of the match performances so well done Christian for a great first season! Lucas Bennett – Forward - 08/09 Appearances: 19 – All time appearances: 37 – Goals: 8 Lucas has shown that he has a good first touch in providing the link play between midfield and attack. He is always available on the goal line to poke the ball in, our very own Gary Liniker (without the ears!). Lucas has scores 8 goals and has a man of the match award to his name. Harvey Deal – Forward – 08-09 Appearances: 19 – All time appearances: 37 – Goals: 27 Harvey has proven to be a bit of a goal machine this year! He likes to run with the ball and take players on (sometimes the same one several times!) and has also shown he can be provider as well as scorer of goals. Har- vey has 4 man of the match performances to add to his 27 goals. Alfie Bridge & James Taylor – We would like to thank Alfie and James for their efforts through the season and wish them well on their new endeavours. I hope all the boys and parents have enjoyed this season as much as I have. I would like to thank Jim and Paul for all their help and advice throughout the season and to Sue for her debt collecting services! Well Done Boys!! Darren, Jim & Paul P W D L F A 19 11 5 3 64 32

After going undefeated last season this season was a learning curve for the boys and also myself. We lost two key players at the start of the season and took on 3 new players and it took time to find positions that suited our new look team. The boys have shown improvements over the course of the season and have managed to score a lot of goals and attack very well as we have scored goals against all teams in our league but we have let a lot of goals in this season and need to get the balance right between attack and defence. I know we have the players to go on and do well next season. A big thank you to Ian Turner and Dave Harwood Janson for assistance with training. In all honesty this was not quite the season we were all hoping for, especially following a

cracking pre-season winning all four games very convincingly. The League season started well with 2 wins and 2 draws in our first 5 games, however the loss of a key player through illness a third of the way through the season had a detrimental effect on results, the boys had to adapt to playing in a variety of new positions and this proved a little too difficult against the quality opposition from a tough division one. Unfortunately as the temperature dropped so did the performances and to say we had a poor winter is an understatement, the “playing as a team” attitude vanished and results started to pile up against us , this is something that the boys will have to address themselves. With spring came a vast improvement, having upped the anti the boys produced battling performances against Runwell, Ashingdon & Concord where we were unlucky not to gain points, a win against Leigh Ramblers and another fine performance against Concord leaves us with a game to go where a draw will maintain our Top Division Status. Whatever the out- come this season one thing is for sure, the boys will always keep moral high as they have throughout this, which has proved our most difficult season. We look forward to next season and hope the experience from this season (good & bad) helps with the boy’s progress. We have a great group of boys and if we can get stability and the boys playing as a team again in their most suited positions, we are sure all can improve no end which will aid their progres- sion to 11 a side in a year’s time.

A final big thank you to Ray Pocock and Kevin Ovens for refereeing our home matches through the season and Anthony Cullen for his assistance in training, bringing a new dimension, fresh and new idea’s which the boys fully appreciate. When the season kicked off back in sunny September, we were hopeful of a promising sea- son building on the strengths from last year. Then came the rain & the snow! During this period of adverse weather, the team also lost their manager, Danny Stalley. A big thank you to Danny for all his hard work over the years for the team. Once the boys got into their stride with regular games, they fought like Tigers, George Burlock - George has come on greatly this season, as demonstrated by scoring a third of the goals for the team! George has added a battling quality to his game this season, which with his pace, has enabled him to be an asset in defending as well as in attack. 15 07/08 Appearances 8 Goals / 59 Total Appearances 10 Total Goals Archie Davies - Archie has developed into one of the key players in the team this year. He can turn his skills from solid defending into full blooded attack. Archie’s confidence has soared, enabling him to press forward & unleash his right foot shots into the back of the net. 15 07/08 Appearances 1 Goals / 59 Total Appearances 3 Total Goals Oliver Dowman - Ollie is without doubt one of the best keepers in the division, if not the league, unrivalled in his bravery, launching himself at the feet of strikers bearing down on goal & saving the team. Ollie is also a fearsome tackler in defence or midfield. 14 07/08 Appearances 0 Goals / 58 Total Appearances 4 Total Goals Luke Hayton - Luke showed great pace running with the ball & has delivered an excellent final ball into the path of a team-mate often resulting in a great team goal. Luke isn’t afraid to show off his skills, often embarrassing the opposition with his quick feet. 16 07/08 Appearances 1 Goals / 60 Total Appearances 8 Total Goals Stephen Kirsh - Stephen, is without doubt one of the best keepers in the division, if not the

  • league. Stephen’s shot stopping is his strength, often belying his lack of height! Stephen is

also one of the best finishers, never afraid to shoot & scoring some vital goals for the team. 15 07/08 Appearances 2 Goals / 59 Total Appearances 18 Total Goals Jacques Lynch - Jacques is once again leading the goal scoring chart for the team. His un- believable pace has embarrassed many defences & combined with his strength & eye for goal this makes Jacques a feared opponent. 17 07/08 Appearances 10 Goals / 61 Total Appearances 35 Total Goals Bertie Reade - Bertie has driven the attack forward but dropped back when required to cover defensively. Bertie demonstrated a steely edge in all aspects of his game, never giving up what others consider a lost cause & has developed into a great all-round player. 17 07/08 Appearances 2 Goals / 61 Total Appearances 16 Total Goals Luke Simson - Luke has commanded the defence & has been the mainstay of the defence, delivering a master class in the art of defending every game this season. Despite his lack of height, Luke still has one of the best long throws in the division. 16 07/08 Appearances 0 Goals / 60 Total Appearances 0 Total Goals Thomas Stalley - Thomas has worked tirelessly in both defence & midfield this season. He has not been afraid to play his way out of defence. Thomas has continued playing to his strengths in midfield & when he runs with the ball, the opposition back off! 14 07/08 Appearances 0 Goals / 58 Total Appearances 4 Total Goals Tyler Timcke - Despite moving house, school & chicken pox Tyler manfully soldiered on where many would have given up. Tyler carried this attitude on in training & into the match- es, showing his determination to win the ball & tough tackling. 14 07/08 Appearances 0 Goals / 58 Total Appearances 1 Total Goals Thanks to Steve Davies for refereeing all our home games, at Grove & Rayleigh Town! Thanks to Lynne Hayton for her assistance throughout the year on organising all the boys’ birthdays, medical bag & hopefully the team’s treasurer job next season! Thanks to Sue Burlock for organising the boys’ Christmas party & the parents dinner; Thanks to Clive Murray of London Commodity Brokers Ltd for their continued sponsorship. Life in Division 2 after gaining promotion was always going to prove challenging. After an

  • pening 9-2 win, we soon realised the difficult task ahead of us with two losses against teams

who dominated us in the football and physical sense. We believe that as the season progressed the team has adapted to this and held onto a mid-table place for the majority of the season. We have continued to play a style of football that is attacking and good to watch, just look at

  • ur goals for/against column!! However, learning the hard way that we need to be more organ-

ised and disciplined defensively as a whole team. The first 6 games were played, as last season, without us having a regular goalkeeper (thanks again to JB, LI, JA & DW). When Harrison joined to be our undisputed No. 1 a massive boost was given to us all. Our squad is as follows:- Harrison Pitt – Goalkeeper Jack Hooper – Defender Sean Watson – Defender Luke Ingram – Midfield Tom Jarman – Midfield / defender Daniel Warrens – Midfield Oliver Clark – Midfield / Attack Jack Beal – Midfield / Attack Nathan Ingram – Midfield Jordan Aspinell – Attack Looking ahead we can take the lessons and experience we have gained from this season in a higher division and build upon this to continue the footballing development of the players. We would like to thank the parents for their ongoing support and the boys for being a great group and a pleasure to coach. Kelvin & Simon

2 Games remaining So we come to the end of our second season together as the Pumas. There have been a couple of changes throughout the season, and we have come through to finish in the top half of our new

  • league. At the beginning of the season we welcomed Flynn into the team and he has proved a great

addition. Flynn Karrer (Goalkeeper) – Flynn started the season as a forward where he scored several goals for the team. For the last 6 games he has moved into the goalkeeping position and has been remark- able there. He has an great attitude and is always positive, even on the occasion he was faced with a penalty against him. Flynn has an amazing jump and will fly to save any ball shot at him! Flynn has had an excellent season with the Pumas. Rhys Cousins (Defence) – Rhys has continued to gain confidence in the team and has become a rock in defence. He is an excellent team player and in recent games has started to move forward as well, striking some amazing shots from the half way line and beyond. That wonder goal will come… opposition goalkeepers watch out! Ryan O’Leary ( Defence) – Ryan started the season in goal for us, but after an injury away from the game, he has returned to carry out a defensive role. Here we have seen Ryan play with a grow- ing confidence and develop a powerful kick. His timing on the ball is improving game by game and we look forward to seeing Ryan gain even more confidence in the coming season. Jamie Fletcher (Defence) – Jamie has played a vital role this season for the team. Since the intro- duction of the three man defence, he has played his part well in a unit which is growing in strength. Jamie is applying his growing football tactics to hold the fort at the back. He is always positive and always gives his best. A great team player. David Watts (Midfield) – Since David has moved from defence to midfield, we have seen David’s confidence grow. He has a growing appreciation of the game and his passing and tackles have im- proved greatly. He has endless energy and is always eager to do his part on the pitch. We look for- ward to David settling even further into his role in the season ahead. Jack Renew (Midfield) – This season has seen Jack become a more ‘complete’ player. He is still excellent on the ball and has now developed as a team player, seeing the passes and using his team mates as well as maintaining his own level of goal scoring. Jack is a strong player with a real pas- sion for football, which shows in his game. Joshua James (Attacking Midfield) – Joshua has adapted well to the various positions he was asked to play in, doing so to a high standard. He has a good technical ability on and off the ball and has scored some vital goals. When captain he has shown strong leadership. He has settled well now into the attacking midfield role and we look forward to more influential goals from him in the sea- son ahead. James Barnes (Midfield) – James has become the master of the set pieces, most notably the cor-

  • ners. He has a good attitude with his team mates, linking up well with other players to score or

make some important goals. James works hard on the ball and is not afraid to put in a timely tackle when needed. Elliot Speed (Defence) – During his time with the team, Elliot played solidly in defence. When called upon he stepped into the goalkeeping role and did a great job there. Elliot has a kick that can go the entire length of the pitch and often did! We all wish Elliot well in the future. We would like to thank the parents and grandparents who have come along to help with training and matches (we will get the hang of those goals J). A big thank you to Rob who was the ref at many of our home games for us and to Alan who was ref at the others. A big thank you to everyone

club. We look forward to a good season again for our last year in Mini soccer. Bring it on!!!!! Adele, Paul and Andy. P W D L F A Pts 18 9 3 6 43 35 30

I knew at the beginning of the season it was going to be the hardest season so far and I wasn’t far

  • wrong. The quality of the opposition has been very high and I was worried that the boys would not

rise to the challenge. But rise they certainly did. I think we found ourselves all saying either we de- served to win that game or we didn’t deserve to lose that game and in most cases I think we deserved to win, especially the really close games against FC Lions, Forest Glade and Trinity. The boys really showed character this season both individually and as a team. The quality of their football has been

  • utstanding.

Whilst we weren’t scoring goals like some of the teams we weren’t conceding them either. Josh, James and Oscar are a supreme team and have shown how strong they are all season. The best de- fence in the division.......probably. It is also so good to have 5 other boys who can play well both in midfield and attack, this will help them next season going in to 11 A-Side. Again they all work to- gether and have been fantastic. The boys should be very proud of their achievements this season, probably 5th place in the league and beaten semi finalists in the Lions cup. I know I am very proud of them and despite the ups and downs have enjoyed watching them develop over the last 5 years. It has been a joy to teach them. My thanks must go again to Adrian for his superb refereeing skills. I will personally have many memories to cherish and hope that all the boys continue to enjoy their football and have the same passion and discipline going into 11 A-Side. I wish them all the very best as they continue their football journey. Brian Judge P W D L F A Pts 17 8 4 3 26 14 29

After the disappointing outcome of last season’s efforts and hard work we started full of expectations to improve our standing in Division 2. Again we were up against familiar opposition in what was going to be a very competitive league. The first two games ended in narrow defeats followed by vic- tory against Redwing only to see the match declared void as Redwing folded. The next 4 games were very exciting but the boys were left deflated as each game was lost either 1-0 or 2-1. A point was won at Essex Royals only to be followed by a crushing defeat by Hawkwell. Mistakes were ironed

  • ut in training only to see the next 3 games also end in defeats. We have always had a good team

spirit in the squad and the boys got their just rewards beating Ashingdon Lions 3-1. A battling draw against Benfleet served the boys well as they kept up their 100 pct record against Ashingdon by beat- ing them again 2-1. With boys away over Easter we had to play a 6 a side game against Southend

  • Manor. The game was played at a high tempo and without any subs the boys deserved more than an-
  • ther narrow 3-2 defeat. At the time of going to press we still have 2 remaining games to play which

will bring an end to the boys 4 years in Mini Soccer. The results and league position do not reflect the way the team have played. There has been some

  • utstanding football, great goals and fantastic saves. The biggest problem we have seen this year is

that many of the opposing players were much bigger and able to muscle the boys off the ball which has lead to many frustrating goals against us. I know the parents have enjoyed their half time refreshments this season and we would like to thank you for all your support and encouragement over the years. U10 Leopards

The season started well. The Leopards won their first trophy in their short footballing careers when deservedly beating Catholic United in the final having earlier disposed of a strong Forest Glade side in the semi final after an epic penalty shootout. From the outset of the season, the boys were continually encouraged to play a passing game. We were finding that at this level, many teams were reliant on strong individual performances and although our lads played the better passing football, their efforts were not rewarded by the right

  • results. As the season went on, the work that had been done at training and during games began to

pay dividends and the Leopards got their first win of the season against Ashingdon Boys. This result gave them the confidence and belief to continue to play the ‘Leopards way’ and the closing stages of a difficult season saw the team put together a run of results that showed all their effort, determination and hard work during the season had paid off. At this point, I would like to thank the parents and the Leopards boys for sticking with our beliefs as to how the game should be

  • played. I know that it could have been so easy to become frustrated while we encouraged this

style of football, especially during the first part of the season when results were not going our

  • way. Hopefully you will be encouraged by the way each player has developed their skills and

have enjoyed this season. As you all know Matthew has not been well since Christmas. I would like to take this opportunity to say well done for his bravery and courage in fighting his illness. Our thoughts have been with him, Belinda, Simon and Tom. As soon as he is better the no 10 shirt will be waiting for him! At this point, I would like to say a big thank you to Simon for his help and support, during such a difficult time for him and the family. Thanks mate. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents for their support, help and encouragement through-

  • ut the season.

U10 Pumas

This was our last season at 7 a side level and we once again did ourselves proud with a safe mid table finishing position in Division 4. As seems to be a common trait of the Pumas, we struggled a little in the first part of the season with some mixed performances but then after Christmas went on an excellent winning run which saw us move up from potential relegation trouble right up to the point where we potentially had a shot for 3rd place a few weeks back. However a 3-1 defeat against Trinity Pumas in late March effectively ended any hopes of that 3rd place finish and it looks as though we will end up in a mid table position either 6th or 7th (there are still a few games left in the league as I write this piece). Most pleasing this season has been the continuing

  • verall footballing development of all the squad which should stand them all in good stead for

the move to 11 a side soccer next season. A Pumas (4th ) team may often contain a mix of natural playing abilities within it but notwithstanding, all 9 of our squad showed an excellent passion for their football and a willingness to listen and learn from the coach. We are rightly proud of our TEAM ethic in the Pumas and adopting this strong ‘team-orientated’ approach, we made quite a habit of surprising some of the top teams this season and oddly enough, we seemed to save up

  • ur weakest performances for the bottom teams (managing somehow to hand both Wickford and

Hawkwell their only wins of the campaign! One of the keys to our successes this season has been the solid “spine” within the team comprising the excellent and fast improving Bryn Evans in goal, Oliver Nevin (wise head on young shoulders) at the back, Kieran Judd (constant running and good skills) in central midfield and Owen Brooks (foraging away up front and covering a lot

  • f ground). These four have been ably supported by Rory Blackaby (left footed defensive mid-

field), Elliot Davies (Solid tackling defender), Jacob Nicholls (an energetic midfielder with a heck of power in his right foot), James Buckley (right midfield) and Sam Missing (likely to pop up anywhere on the pitch!) Whilst I won’t personally be actively managing a team next season, I’m hopeful that Darren will be involved in coaching of one of the 11 a side teams and once again I would like to publicly thank him here for all his time and effort this season successfully coaching our group of players. Darren’s approach to coaching is positive, enthusiastic and au-

  • thoritative. The boys react well to his proven methods and I hope some of the boys will get the

chance one again to benefit from his coaching next season. Whatever choices the boys make for next season, I wish them all well whether that be playing for Rayleigh Boys or other clubs in the local area. Have a great summer everyone! Colin Blackaby & Darren Brooks

The beginning of the first season of 11-aside football is always challenging, like others teams we had to integrate players from different sides from last season as well as players moving to us from other clubs. This proved to be painless as the key to it was having good lads in both talent and most importantly personality, coupled with this Steve, Dave and I have enjoyed the full support of the parents. As we have maintained all season team spirit can be forged within the team and coaches but in junior football the parents help maintain that spirit and the support this team have had this year has been fantastic, so thank you to our loyal supporters. We competed in Division A so we could focus on improving ourselves and earn promotion to the Premier Division by right. We won the league which we targeted and as you can see from the stats above our record speaks for itself. We play good, attacking football and al- ways look to win games but not compromising at the back. We had a great cup run, dismiss- ing two Premier division teams (away from home!) playing another Premier Division team, Ecko Whitecaps in the Semi Final at their home pitch, which was hard, bumpy, sloped, windy! We eventual lost on penalties – the lads deserved better The team have earned the right to play Premier Division football and we need to be eager to keep learning, improving and most of all enjoy our football. It will be tougher, but I know we have the capability and belief to continue on this so far successful and enjoyable journey. Thanks to Dave and Steve who have been a huge help to both me and the lads and we’re lucky to have them. Going into 11 a side was a large leap for everybody and was not helped by being put in a league with teams who for the last four years had been playing at a higher level. Coming into the season we added to the old Ti- gers team George Chapman, Beau Simpson and Daniel Paynter from the old Leopards Aaron Zimmer and Sam Beck- ett who were ex Lions players and Josh Parry who joined from FC Redwing, we also had Mark Chapman and Karl Hayes join the coaching staff. The season started off reasonably well with close fought contests in the early games and with an ex- tremely good win against Cath-

  • lic A. As the season moved on
  • ur displays seemed to get more

intermittent and we fell into the trap of not killing teams off, I would say at least 75% of our lost games we were ahead at half time. We have played fantastic football at times this year and we have certainly not had the luck just purely by how many times we have hit the post and bar. This has culmi- nated in the second half of the season being very disappointing by way of results seemingly losing be- lief we can win games. I firmly believe the boys will learn from this and we will improve next year. As we go into next season we will again be changing with Beau having left mid season to pursue Kite Rac- ing we will be having at least one new player joining The lads have formed further into a team and more importantly there friendship has grown. The boys have been a pleasure to work with all season and when you see them congratulating each oth- er on good goals or saves it makes the effort all worthwhile. I would like to thank Simpson Webb for their sponsorship of the team shirts and BASF for their tracksuit sponsorship. I would like to thank To- ny and Dave for regularly running the line and Wendy for doing the water bottles. Pre-season saw a number of additions to the squad of last year, which only strengthened the team in readiness for our first season in 11 a-side football. Nobody really knew how the boys would adapt to the new rules, the bigger goals and the much bigger pitch and it was with a sense of trepi- dation that we commenced the season. The boys quickly got to grips with the changes and to their credit the football at times was just excellent. As the season progressed, it became a two horse race as to who would win the Division E title, Ekco Whitecaps or ourselves. In a repeat of last year, it went right to the very last game of the season but unfortunately Ekco beat us and grabbed the top

  • spot. Despite the disappointment of not winning the title, it’s a massive achievement to have fin-

ished our first year in 11 a-side football as Division “E” runners-up. Each and every boy has im- proved this year and they should feel proud of finishing the season in 2nd place and gaining promo-

  • tion. . Well done to all the boys for their efforts over the season.

Josh Thorn (Goalkeeper) There were games where Josh saw very little of the ball but he kept his concentration & could al- ways be relied upon to make great saves when needed. Even scored us a goal on the rare occasion we let him out!! Adapted well to the bigger goals and had another great season. Well done Josh. Stephen Crocombe (Defender) The sound effects of last year have disappeared but his defending ability most definitely hasn’t. Great job of organising the back four and adapted very well to the offside rule. Scored a number of good goals. Well done Stephen. Callum Barker (Defender) Another solid performance this season who has improved and added thundering headers to his

  • skills. A key figure at the back and has played a major role in our success this year.

George Ramsay (Defender) First season for George who performed exceptionally well in defence (as well as giving us a few laughs along the way). A great character who’s pace got us out of trouble on a number of occa-

  • sions. Well done George for an excellent first season.

Christopher Streames Defender A new recruit at the start of the season and quickly fitted in to the left back position. Very quick & a very effective defender. We’ll miss him next year. Good luck Chris. Edward Taylor (Defender/Midfield) A great battler for the ball and despite not really liking the defender role, he performed it extreme- ly well. Eddie always seems to pop-up from nowhere to score some cracking goals. Angelo Manor (Midfield) Joined us from the Leopards Team at the beginning of the season and was a great addition to the

  • squad. Great engine and works hard in the midfield. Some good goals this year,

Matthew Naylor Midfield Only a crazy person would get in the way of one of his shots. Another great catch from the Leop- ards Team who strengthened the midfield considerably. Hard worker who blasts in goals from all

  • ver the place!! Well done Matt.

Ryan Lambert (Left Wing) Another good year for Ryan and his left foot. Excellent provider of the ball to the front boys & always on hand to help out on the left. Great attitude & some great goals. Nice one Ryan. Alfie Wood(Right Wing) Still performing that “drag-back” but this year has learnt where the net is and added goal scoring to his game. Had a good year on the right wing. Well done Alfie, good season. Ollie Birrell(Striker) Moved up front this year & showed just what he’s capable of. Demonstrated good dribbling skills & control, and scorer of some very good goals. Great season Ollie, well done. Adam McDonnell (C)(Striker) Great awareness, worked hard up front and always a threat on the ball. Provider to many a goal and scorer of some very good goals himself. Another great season. Many thanks Adam. Isaac Fuente (Defender/Striker) Only place we didn’t use Isaac was in goal. Always available to do a good job and worked hard for the team. Scorer of the goal that wasn’t!! Well done Isaac. One person who deserves special mention is Dave Barker. Dave has run the line for us all season (and without the use of any heavy armed tactics!!). His help on match days (as well as on Satur- days) is greatly appreciated by everyone within the team. Thanks Dave. Finally, a big thank to the wives, parents, grandparents & families/friends that again have been magnificent in supporting the team (and us as coaches). We hope everyone has enjoyed the season and we look forward to seeing you all again in September, when we do it all over again. Gerry, Dean & Paul

After our promotion last season we had high hopes of doing well this season but a 9-1 defeat was not the start we were looking for. I have always tried to be more focused on the ‘taking part’ and less on the ‘winning’ but I am sure Sunday lunch tastes better for the team with the ‘9’ than the team with the ‘1’. We were to have a few more character building results over the coming weeks but it says a lot about the commitment of the boys and parents that we managed to keep things going and have had a very strong finish to the season. Good performances against the top 3 sides have shown that we are more than capable of competing in this division and have given us plenty to look for- ward to next season. Well done to Sam Ashkuri on scoring over one hundred goals for Rayleigh boys, this is a great achievement and I am sure there are many more to come. Well done to Steven Mead for playing at all this season. Steven had a nasty accident last summer and missed the first 3 months. I think most boys would have been out for a year but thanks to Steven’s determination he has made a full recovery and is now back to his goal scoring best. A big thank you to Steve Davies and Phil Ashkuri for helping out with training and the matches. Thanks to Phil Alone for doing such a great job with the finances, unfortunately our bid for David Villa has been rejected. Finally a big thank you to all the mums and dads for being so supportive year after year and to the boys for keeping going, Win, Lose or Draw. What a season! Just before the season commenced, I was having to turn prospective players away because there were already fifteen who wished to go forward to the 2008/9 season. Suddenly, the lads were let down by a few who de- spite having signed on, decided to go elsewhere. A bit of honesty would have meant that I’d have been able to sign new players to take their place. After this, some lads decided that they no longer wished to play foot-

  • ball. Throughout the season we have lost even more players for a variety of reasons.

We signed a new player, Simon Murphy, who has settled in well and a couple of weeks ago James Ottewell kindly agreed to come and help us out, transferring from another Rayleigh Boys team. At the time of writing, we have ten players. I have to say how tremendously proud I am of all the lads who have stayed with the team. They have rallied and produced some very good football in the direst of circumstances. On some occasions, there were only eight players; sometimes matches had to be cancelled as there were only seven. It would have been very easy for us to give up and admit defeat. Yet they have all shown remarkable resilience and the team spirit has been increasingly evident. I am proud of every single one of them and it was extremely difficult for me to choose a Player of the Season this year. Our final position in the league will not reflect the hard work nor the way in which the lads have selflessly given of themselves. The final roll of honour : Oakley Brown Ben Clark Lawrie Mayor Simon Murphy James Ottewell Anthony Pegg Christopher Punt Charlie Richer James Sanders Jack Vail Without the strong support of the assistant manager Paul Richer, I do not think we would have been able to carry on. He has given me and the boys great assistance both on and off the field and I’m sure that all the parents will join me in expressing their gratitude. I should also like to thank all of the parents; you have been very loyal towards the team and many of you have given me encouragement and thanks throughout the season. Your most wonderful manager, Colin.

At the time

  • f writing this

report, I am unsure as to exactly where we are going to finish this season, although it is likely to be either 3rd or 4th in Divi- sion ‘A’. Still, what was apparent, with

  • nly one

team manag- ing to do the double

  • ver us, we

have become an extreme- ly tough and competitive

  • squad. All

boys have worked very hard this year, with their great passing game philosophy that has had some of the

  • ther teams in
  • awe. I have

thoroughly enjoyed watching the team im- prove and learn from the additional coaching techniques provided by Ian Boxall who has been installing the requirement of composure to all the boys. A big thanks must go to Wayne for all his hard work in coaching the boys this year, along with taking up the managerial duties in the second half of the season - and not forgetting the fact that he is also the team Sponsor. Wayne – your hard work is very much appreciated. I would also like to thank Colin Lander and Paul Coleman for their continual assistance in carrying out the duties of linesman and on some occasion’s even refereeing the matches at very short notice. We are saying goodbye to two people this season. The first is Luke, who has been with the team since he was five years old. Luke has decided to hang up his boots for the relaxing game of golf. Luke is a two times past winner of the Player of the Season Award, so he is going to be a great loss to the team. I would like to say a big thank you to Luke and I wish him every success for the future. The second person is his Dad Ian who has been part of the coaching team for some years now. Ian bought the calmness and determination to the training sessions that was always so needed. He quietly analyzed what was happening in the game and offered some astute advice throughout. I would like to thank him for all the help and hard work that he has given the team over the years and I hope he enjoys his future weekends playing golf with Luke. It is with some sadness that I am writing my final End of Season report after eight great years of managing the team. It is now time to pass this honored duty on to Wayne, whom I have no doubt will take this team from strength to strength with renewed optimism and energy. Well, that’s it from me. I wish the boys the best of luck for next season and I am very much looking forward to becoming just one of the Dad’s (just please don’t ask me to do the lino duties)!!!!! We started the season with four new signings and the loss of four players from last season but I have to say overall a stronger squad. With the new look team taking time to gel the season did not start well with 2 heavy defeats. However with a lot of hard work by everyone things turned around in our third league game which saw our first win and we then went on a five game win- ning streak. Unfortunately the bad weather brought this to an end and when we resumed we could not recover our form and the next seven games saw our challenge fade with five defeats and two draws. Having said that, one of those draws was against the runaway leaders and cham- pions elect who up until meeting us had won ten out of ten. Things are looking very encourag- ing for next season as we have another four potential new signings which will hopefully once again strengthen the team and also give us a slightly bigger squad. It only leaves me to thank my assistant manager Steve Lloyd Martin Burlock, for his kind financial contribution Adam Birch for securing our kit sponsorship deal. From when the team started all those years ago I always knew that every year would bring dif- ferent challenges but I believe this year as been the toughest so far for many rea-

  • sons. The season started

with some bad results, players leaving and we picked up some injuries. This meant that many games were played without a fully fit team and at one point this season I couldn’t see us getting even a single point. Throughout this time it would be fair to say that the boys kept turning up and their effort was

  • fantastic. I can think of many games during the season where the opposing manager comple-

mented me on the resolve of the boys and despite losing they came of the pitch with dignity. As the season progressed and players returned to fitness I could see the improvement in the whole team and we had three or four games where you could see that we were on the verge of picking up points. Then we managed to beat Benfleet B and from then on we started playing some excellent football with real belief and the results started to come. I applaud all of the boys that stayed committed because many teams would have folded when the going got tough and to turn the season around like you did shows amazing resilience. We were losing every week and players were quitting but paradoxically that made the team stronger and I believe the whole experience has made the boys better players and a closer, stronger team. I am moving over next year, after 8 seasons, and Geoff will no doubt take the team forward and his experience of running the U16’s this year will be of benefit to the boys. It will be good for the boys to have a change of coach and I know Geoff is looking forward to it. I sign off with great sadness as this role has brought me some fantastic memories and I would like to thank the parents and the boys for giving me those years. I have been very fortunate with the support I have received. I possibly haven’t always said it but I will take this oppor- tunity to say a big thank you to you all. As always the last word should be about the boys. It has been a pleasure to share the experi- ence with you and you are a great bunch of lads. I wish you all the luck in the future and thank you for allowing me to be part of your great team for 8 years. Welcome to this afternoons presentation awards. Normally this is when the manager reels of all the statistics showing the goals his team has scored and all the assists that his midfielders have had etc etc….well, this article will not be quite like that. It is old news now dwelling how and why we ended up back in the B Division but that is what has happened. We started the season with 16 boys and are ending the season with 13, which actually is more than I thought we would finish with. In fact the truth is, halfway through the season I was not sure that we would finish the season at all and it is this determination to be a team that I want to focus on here. Even though the division has proved that we are not strong enough to compete (by that I mean win) at this level, we have at times given a good account of ourselves. I can honestly say that at the end of every game we get praise from the opposition manager and referee, not for the results or for the free flowing football that we would like (and want) to play but the way the team never gives up or let their heads drop! I can remember the Gt Wakering manager ringing me up on the Sunday night after the game, we had lost 7- 0 but had only conceded our first goal seconds before the half time whistle, this game was only a couple months after losing 14 ¬0 to the same opposition. He called me to say what a credit the boys were to the team and themselves, and that several of their parents had mentioned that if their boys had gone through the sort of season we were having, then a lot of the boys would not have been interested and would had left or given up. So to summarise, I just want to say a big well done to the boys for their energy and enthusiasm for the team and the game they love! All the boys enjoy training and it has been a pleasure to lead the boys for the season, having said that I do hope for more competitive games next season! A few good lucks and thank you’s to mention, James Smale, left to try new out other interests. A big thank you to Karen Smale for being assis- tant, full manager and coach in recent years. Due to a medical complaint Karen has had to stop being involved with the team, thanks for all your hard work Karen. Damien Bull left halfway through to try his luck at another team in a lower division, Damien and is parents were a pleasure to know and we wish them well. Dan McDuff has had to leave due to a medical complaint, I am sure I will not find a more enthu- siastic goalkeeper than him! Get well soon Dan. Cameron Hagie is leaving the team to concentrate on his other love, Basketball. Thank you Cam for sticking with the team all through the season and good luck for the future. I can honestly say that Cameron almost won most improved player of the season, 2nd place but very well done! Thank you also to Brian and Trudie, his parents, for their help and support throughout the season. I am looking to add to players to the existing squad for next season and I would hope you would all stick together so we can have a successful 09/10 season Oliver Marley – Goalkeeper Reece Latimer – LB Harry Stevens – CB Harry Davies – CB Bradley Hayes – RB Elliot Acton – MID/DEF Luke Harris – MID Dean Keetch – MID/ST Ben James – MID/ST Charles Butler – MID/ST Luke Wellington – MID Cameron Hagie – MID Tom Foley – DEF/MID Andy James

The season started with a new management team and just enough players to register the team to compete in the league. Over the next few weeks new players were recruited and we started the season with a squad of 15. Pre season started badly with Ryan Slater chipping a bone in his hip and subsequently missing almost two months. This basically was the story of our season. I don’t think we were able to field the same starting 11 players for two weeks in a row. Over the year we lost Mike Molford and Matt Riley (Goal Keeper) with broken arms along with numer-

  • us niggling injuries to a number of players that left them out of action for one or two weeks at

a time. A more long term injury occurred to Jack Smith who played only in a couple of games and missed most of the season - better luck next year Jack! Jake Lander deserves a special mention for standing in a number of times as replacement Goalkeeper, during Matt’s injury, giving some outstanding performances. Well played and many thanks Jake. Team Spirit What team spirit! What can I say? This group of lads has tremendous team spirit. They never fall out or argue amongst themselves. Their attitude and spirit are second to none. They always supportive of and encouraging each other, never giving up or letting their heads drop. They are all a credit to themselves, their parents and the football club and it has been a pleasure for Paul and myself to be associated with them. Training I think this group of lads would train all day given the chance. They have a fantastic attitude to training with at least 70% of the squad attending each week come rain or shine. We espe- cially like that they do as they are asked with no backchat. Special Thanks Special thanks go to Angie Slater for all the administration, without which we would have no games, referees, pitches etc - rubbish job, no reward, no thanks, taken for granted - thanks for everything Angie. Also thanks to our resident linesman, Colin Lander. I think Colin only missed one game this year. Many thanks. Supporters Its great to see (especially at this age group) the majority of the lads parents still watching their sons play with full support and encouragement. Finally To the lads. Thanks for being a great set of guys, never complaining, moaning or criticising especially when you have been substituted. It has been for Paul and myself a pleasure to be working with you. We look forward to carrying on in the same way next season (more winning than losing though). Enjoy your summer and see you next season. Paul and Kev

Another Season nearly over, as I write this we still have two games to play. It’s been a long drawn out season, what with not playing our first league game till mid Octo- ber and the bad weather. As a team we have a great team spirit, and must congratulate the existing team for welcoming the new players, we had seven new lads join us in the summer. And they fitted in straight away. I’m very fortunate to have a great bunch of lads who are willing to listen and work hard. As a team we are our own worst enemy, on our day we can beat anyone in this league and we did prove that. As for performance of the season it has to be the 2-2 draw with only nine players, it was great witnessing the effort and work rate of the team that day. If one word could sum up our season it is inconsistent, so next season let’s change that and challenge for the title. Thanks to the following people for their help this season: Alex (training) Andrew, Harvey, Duncan (refreshments and linesman) and Chris. Also a big thank you to Rayleigh Window Cleaning Services for our new kit this season. Thanks to ALL THE PARENTS FOR THEIR SUPPORT EVERY WEEK Look forward to seeing you all next season. Rayleigh U16A opened the 2008-09 season with a victory against Rayleigh U16C which saw new Captain Luke Nicholls given the honour of lifting the Mark Chitty Cup. Confidence was high as the team opened the league season with a resounding 5-3 victory away to Trinity, normally a bo- gey team for Rayleigh, the result bred confidence and Rayleigh remained unbeaten in the league until January. A solid defence manned by Levett, Cooper, Nicholls, Poulson, Mason, Heather and Smith provided the foundation for the team to play their football. Cup defeats before Christmas saw Rayleigh eliminated from the County and League cups so the league became the focus for the team. Notable performances early on were the comebacks against Rayleigh B and Basildon Boys. The only low point was losing the influential Ryan Weeks to inju- ry early on in the season. The teams’ midfielders, Bateman. Shadbolt, Cerson, Howe and Fry rose to the challenge and all five would score goals throughout the season. The team went top of the table in November following the standout game of the season, a 3-0 vic- tory against title rivals and previously unbeaten, Great Wakering. The game represented every thing good about the team, they stood up to a physically intimidating team and played their foot- ball, Sam Levett saved a penalty and Callum Shadbolt put in the performance of the season to score a magnificent hat trick from midfield. Goals were flowing throughout the side with Fuller, Mardell and Shadbolt each contesting the title

  • f leading scorer. Rayleigh were prolific and scored in every single game finishing the season as

the top scorers in the division. Despite a tricky period in February, Rayleigh remained top of the league until the end of the season and barring a freak result in the final Gt Wakering game, Ray- leigh will finish the season as U16 Division A Champions. Personal highlights of the season were the win against Gt Wakering, super goals from Jordan Fry, Alex Fuller and Conor Mason, Callum Shadbolt’s goals from midfield, Chris Quaey’s double against Basildon. Matt Mardell finishing top goal scorer in the entire division, James Bateman’s performance in the 6-0 win against Leigh Rockets. Ryan Weeks making a courageous return from injury when the team were in trouble, Jim Howe making his 100th appearance for the team. My thanks go to all the parents, families and friends that have supported the team, and in particu- lar to Graham Levett for his help and support. Most of all I’d like to thank my players; it has been an honour and privilege to coach you. You are a credit to Rayleigh Boys YFC. Congratulations to my U16 Division A Champions. Geoff Middleton.

After 10 years this is my last end of season report, don’t worry it will be the same as the rest short and to the point. Once again new players have joined this season to replace those who left during the summer. In came Thomas Watkins, Owen Mant, Zach Dunkley and Joe Peploe. This season started with a win but unfortunately Jake Smerdon broke his leg in the game and has not played all season. First half of the season we suffered with injuries to key players, as the in- jured players returned the squad became stronger and played some good football winning 7 out of the last 8 games. Thank you to everyone whether it be family or friends for there help and support for me and the team over the last 9 seasons (10 years). Finally I would like to wish the boys every success in what ever they do in the coming years. Having finished last season so well and with no changes to the squad, Lee and I were convinced we would be the team to watch this season. How wrong we were! Our entire season has been beset with injuries, most notably the long term losses of our goalkeep- er Declan Olley, who was injured in the first game of the season, and our captain Will Davis who was only fit for the first three games. We were fortunate to be able to sign Casum Tiffin and Bob- by Mills to strengthen the team but, from a squad of seventeen players we have often only man- aged to field eleven. With two key players missing the confidence of the team quickly diminished. Consequently, we struggled to get results against teams we would normally have expected to beat. However, we have a great team spirit and, despite the injury problems, the boys have played some magnificent attacking football and gained some impressive victories,

  • f which they should be extremely proud. Our expected mid-table finish is not a true representa-

tion of the quality of football we are capable of playing. When I took on the role of manager I was unsure whether I would enjoy the responsibility of man- aging a team. My fears have proved to be totally unfounded and for this I must primarily thank the

  • boys. There is a great camaraderie within the squad and whether we win or not, the boys never

lose sight of the fact that they are playing football for pleasure. They are true ambassadors of the club and it has been an honour and privilege to manage them for the past three years. I hope in future they can look back at their time with Rayleigh Boys and remember it with as much fond- ness as I will. As an U16 manager, this is usually the time to bid farewell to the boys as they move onto senior football or find other interests. This has always seemed such a shame when so many of the boys, who have been together from the age of seven, want to continue playing. This year we are fortu- nate to be offered the opportunity to do just that, so I hope the boys will stay together and we can continue to enjoy being part of a great team. My thanks to Lee Olley for his coaching support, to Debbie Chitty for helping with administrative duties, to Ray Price and Phil Wright for their assistance on the training ground and to our lines- man, Tim Mahoney, whose knowledge of the offside rule is far deeper than many of the referees! We look forward to the new season with the optimism that next year maybe, just maybe, our year. Russell Carter
