  1. Radioactive Dumping 1 Welsbach and General Gas Mantle were major US producers of gas mantles from 1880s to 1940s. Radioactive thorium was used to make the gas mantles glow brighter. Ooooh shiny! Waste thorium and radium were used as fill throughout Gloucester City and Camden, NJ.

  2. Radioactive Dumping 1 Subject Property in Gloucester City, NJ Fenced off area of debris observed during site visit, but no signage. Upon review of NJDEP and EPA files, found to be radiologically-impacted debris from off-site gas mantle manufacturing facility (Welsbach Superfund Site).

  3. Radioactive Dumping 1 EPA selected excavation for remediation of these sites, but had no timeframe for removal from subject property. RP stopped production in early 1940s so dump site sat for approximately 70 years! Owner required to maintain fence at all times. If EPA does not complete cleanup, then owner may be responsible.

  4. Radioactive “Recycling” 2 In 50’s and 60’s, radioactive uranium mill tailings were “recycled” into backfill and building materials. Approximately 65,000 sites in Grand Junction, CO were affected.

  5. Radioactive “Recycling” 2 Subject property in Grand Junction, CO Building built in 1954, had radioactive mill tailings used in backfill for foundation, and in mortar for CMU walls. 485 cubic yards in interior and 5,014 CY throughout exterior.

  6. Radioactive “Recycling” 2 Remedial action: all impacted materials and soil removed in 1992-93, subfloor ventilation systems installed (but not currently used). GW in 1994 had gross alpha radiation and uranium above CO standards, but after a 1995 Property Completion Report the DOE indicated that the site had met EPA cleanup requirements.
