  2. The Interdepartmental Program of Postgraduate Studies « Protection conservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments» founded and started functioning since 1998-99 academic year with the participation of the six Schools of the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki : : • School of Architecture • School of Civil Engineering • School of Rural and Surveying Engineering • School of Mechanical Engineering • School of Electrical and Computer Engineering • School of Chemical Engineering

  3. project for Chalki • From its inception in 1998 until 2004 the IPPS functioned within the framework of the Operational Program “Education and Initial Professional Training” (EPEAEK) under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education.\ • This initial EPEAK funding provided the opportunity for the Program to be equipped with high technology instruments and specialized books. These funds were also allocated for the completion of the Program’s building infrastructure.

  4. The Program was headed by the following AUTh Professors: • 1998-2005 Xanthippi Skarpia-Heupel • 2005-2007 Georgios Karadedos • 2007-2009 Kallirroi Palyvou • 2009-2012 Aimilia Stefanidou • 2012+ Alexandra Alexopoulou

  5. The Evaluation of the Program was designed to include two stages: • The first stage of the evaluation was conducted by Greek and foreign distinguished scholars and scientists, specialized on the subject of the program. The Program was awarded high grade and very positive comments. Avramidou Nina , Architect, Professor of Structural Systems Technology on the University of Florence, Faculty of Architecture., International Centre for the Preservation of the Architectural Heritage – Italy, President Aggelidis Sokratis , Dr Civil engineer, Emeritus Prof. of the National Technical University of Athens Veis Georgios, Dr. Rural and Surveying Engineer , Emeritus Prof. of the National Technical University of Athens Delivorias Aggelos , Dr. Archeologist, Prof National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Director of the Benaki Museum Lavvas Georgios , Architect, Archeologist, member of The Academy of Athens, Prof. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Matteini Mauro , Dr. Chemist, University of Florence , Italy Meitinger Otto , Dr.Achitect, Prof. for Design and Preservation at the Technical University of Munich, Germany Wehdorn Manfred , Dr. Architect, Prof. Technical University of Wien, Austria • The second evaluation stage is conducted biannually by the Program’s students who fill in written questionnaire, submitted upon the completion of their course.

  6. Aims and Objectives of the Program • The promotion of knowledge in the specific field. • The formation of a field of scientific interchange among disciplines • The development of research in related scientific fields. • To cover the needs at postgraduate level of trained administrative or technical members of production units and of new specialized scientists.

  7. There are two directions in the Program: Direction A: Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments Direction B: Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art and Mechanisms

Courses: Direction A : obligatory courses (11) elective courses (24) Direction B : obligatory courses (23) Theoretical and lab courses are thought by teaching stuff of Faculty of Engineering and other schools of AUTh and by visiting scientists working in various Institutes, and research centers in Greece and abroad. The Interdisciplinary Laboratory studies a particular topic related to the restoration and re use of historic building and building complexes. The study is conducted by groups of students of different scientific disciplines in an effort to forge an interdisciplinary spirit of cooperation. So far it has proved as key-element in the structure of the courses.
