  20. MY NRP jr SUPERVISOR  Do remember that not all Supervisors are local / native to Singapore – many of our Professors are foreigners and some are new to Singapore.  What does this mean? o They may not have an understanding of the Singapore educational landscape. o They may not know what our school hours are like. o They may not understand how demanding education can be in Singapore. o You will have to communicate clearly and not take things for granted or assume that your Supervisor necessarily knows / understands the challenges / demands you might be facing in school.

  21. NTU OFFICE HOURS  Mondays to Thursdays: 8.30am to 5.45pm Fridays: 8.30am to 5.15pm Saturdays / Sundays & Public Holidays: Closed  DO NOT assume that your Supervisor will always be at his / her desk or in the office – he / she may be away at class, meetings or in the lab doing research. Always make prior arrangements with your Supervisor before heading to NTU to meet with him/her.

  22. DOCUMENTS TO HAND MY SUPERVISOR  MOE School Calendar o The NTU Academic Calendar differs quite significantly from the MOE School Calendar. o Your vacation periods DO NOT MATCH those of your Supervisor’s. Period MOE School NTU May/Jun 27 May to 25 Jun 2017 8 May to 4 Aug 2017 Sept 2 Sept to 10 Sept 2017 2 Oct to 6 Oct 2017 Nov/Dec 25 Nov to 31 Dec 2017 11 Dec 2017 to 12 Jan 2018  DO NOT assume that your Supervisor will be in Singapore during the NTU Semestral vacation periods.

  23. DOCUMENTS TO HAND MY SUPERVISOR  School Timetable & CCA Days o You should give a copy of your school timetable to your Supervisor. o You should also alert your Supervisor of your expected CCA days or any other days in the week you may have other commitments to attend to and therefore will not be able to head down to NTU to work on your NRP jr project.  Travel Time to NTU o You may also want to alert your Supervisor of the time it would take for you to travel from your home / school to NTU. o Distance must NEVER be an excuse for your unwillingness to head to NTU – you should have factored NTU’s location into your decision when you decided to accept our offer.

  24. DOCUMENTS TO HAND MY SUPERVISOR  Your School’s Event Calendar o You should inform your Supervisor of the dates / periods you will not be able to work on your project because of: ¤ Common tests ¤ Mid-year and end-of-year examinations ¤ Competitions  Holiday / Home Leave Periods o It is also your responsibility to communicate clearly to your Supervisor the periods you expect to go on holiday, and also the dates of your home leave and the duration you expect to be away.

  25. DOCUMENTS TO HAND MY SUPERVISOR  Contact Details o Give your Supervisor your ¤ Home number ¤ Mobile number ¤ Preferred email address o Get from your Supervisor his/her ¤ Office address ¤ Office telephone number ¤ Mobile number (don’t insist, some Profs are not comfortable sharing this number with students) ¤ Email address

  26. CONTACTING MY SUPERVISOR  Remember to tell your Supervisor the best time for him / her to contact you. Similarly, you should also find out from your Supervisor the best time for you to contact him / her as well as his / her preferred mode of communication.  Some Supervisors may ask one of their Graduate / PhD students or a Research Officer in their laboratory to mentor you – do check with your Supervisor. Find out who your immediate mentor will be and make sure that you have the contact details of this person.  ALWAYS copy your NRP jr Teacher Co-ordinator in all emails that you send to your Supervisor.

  27. GANTT CHART • A Gantt chart is one of the most popular and useful ways of showing activities / tasks / events displayed against time. o The vertical axis lists the activities / tasks you need to complete; the horizontal axis shows the time / duration needed for each activity. o Each activity is represented by a bar; the position and length of the bar reflects the start date, duration and end date of the activity. o This allows you to see at a glance: ¤ What the various activities are ¤ When each activity begins and ends ¤ How long each activity is scheduled to last ¤ Where activities overlap with other activities, and by how much ¤ The start and end date of the whole project

  28. DRAWING A SIMPLE GANTT CHART  List your activities / tasks  Estimate / Anticipate the expected start time for each activity  Estimate the time / duration required per activity  Arrange activities in sequential order
