NBAF Mission Drivers • Construction of a BSL-4 large animal facility is critical to protecting the nations food supply, agriculture and public safety. • U.S. currently has no such capacity for large livestock research and is dependent upon the limited use of facilities in Canada and Australia. • The National Academies of Science has unequivocally stated in two recent reports that it is “imperative” that the U.S. have BSL-4 capability. • Current facility, Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) is 58 years old and at the end of its life cycle. – Limited research capability and no BSL-4 capability – Recapitalization would exceed $620M and still not provide BSL-4 capability
