The Evolution of Academic Focus
In the beginning……. Atkinson County
Concern Solution
“Glorified homeroom” where students showed a lack of commitment
- Academic Focus was moved to later in the
day
- Received a grade and class credit for the
elective course “Study Skills” Standardized Test Scores
- Instructional content focused on math skills
and improving reading comprehension and Lexile Levels Teacher’s math content knowledge
- Senior peer tutors were assigned to the
math Academic Focus classes
Year One – Peach County High School 2015-2016 – 7 Periods
Grade Structure Classes were formed by… Content Concentration
9th & 10th Grades The student’s 7th grade CRCT score in Math
- 2 Days a Week – Math based on the students’ current knowledge level.
- 2 Days a Week – Informational extended reading passages about science
and math
11th Grade The student’s Lexile Reading Level Score based on the 9th grade EOC
- Informational extended reading passages about U.S. History events.
- The readings reinforced the studies of the U.S. History classes as well as
increased the students’ reading comprehension and Lexile Level.
- At the beginning of the year, students received passages within their
Lexile range. As the year progressed, readings increased in complexity/rigor to reach grade level.
12th Grade
- Economics, SAT/ACT Prep (USATestPrep)
The Evolution of Academic Focus
Year Two – Peach County High School 2016-2017 – Block
Grade Structure Classes were formed by… Content Concentration
9th Grade 9th-Grade ELA classes Algebra I classes Math Readiness Biology Each EOC content class traveled as a group to an Academic Focus class with a content teacher that matched their EOC. For example, Ms. McKenzie’s 2nd block Algebra I class traveled to another math teacher, Dr. Johnson, for Academic Focus. Students with NO EOC this semester were grouped by their Math Scores from first semester as well as their transcripts. They were placed as follows:
- Failed Foundations last semester → Remedial Foundations
- Taking Foundations this semester → Foundations Support
- Did well in Foundations last semester → Pre-Algebra
- Did well in Algebra I last semester → Pre-Geometry
- Taking Advanced Algebra or Pre-Calculus now → Split Schedule
Split Schedule → 2 groups that rotate 9 weeks Group 1 Example: Monday/Wednesday/Friday – Tutor Tuesday/Thursday – SAT/ACT/LEXILE Improvement 10th Grade Algebra I classes Geometry classes Math Readiness Physical Science Biology 11th Grade American Literature U.S. History 12th Grade Economics Capstone Project
