Carpenters Road Lock – HLF project

Welcome Joanna Steele Heritage Activities Officer Context The project will restore Carpenters Road Lock which is located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The lock has been hidden and dis-used for over 40

  • years. Its restoration will bring a forgotten

piece of local heritage out of the shadows and make it visible for people to experience, understand and celebrate. The lock was built in the 1930s depression as part of flood alleviation works and for navigation to access the waterside industries that thrived in this area of East London. A period of neglect since the lock ceased to be used in the 1970s ensued, until these waterways were revitalised under the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games preparation and Legacy.

Walking for Health

  • Walking project aimed at the isolated and those

that need gentle exercise for both mental and physical wellbeing

  • Advertised in doctor’s surgeries and through

MacMillan cancer trust

  • Walking for health is a nationwide charity in

association with the Ramblers and Macmillan

  • Walks are a gentle pace, over short distances

and are focused on social interaction rather than working up a sweat. A short 45min walk has to be included in the plan and routes should have good access to transport

  • Each walk requires a trained walk leader
  • London Volunteer Towpath Rangers will be

trained by walking for health as walk leaders

  • One walk per month planned for the next 4

months as a trial. The hope is to expand this number to include more areas of London

  • Potential to target a variety of groups for the

walks, many conditions can benefit from gentle exercise

  • Insurance is provided by Walking for Health
