  2. A framework for all… • A Nature Framework for all – Not just for signatories Minister of Environment … For whole of governement, for all level of governments – For multilateral institutions – For indigenous Peoples and Local Communities – For Civil Society – For business – NGOs CBD Post 2020 Process • A Framework that sets goals for all – Not trying to define process set under existing and future conventions 2

  5. Vision 2050 “ Living in harmony with nature ” 2050 Vision “ By 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all CBD Post 2020 Process people.” 5

  6. 2050 Goals (Proposal!) 2050 Goals • Species Healthy – preventing extinctions, Resilient – increasing the abundance of species and/or on the desired Ecosystems & status of species in 2050. Healthy – improved status of threatened species or Species maintenance/prevention of risk for all species. – genetic diversity. – Indicators: Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN… Living Planet Index Human • Ecosystems Needs Are – change in the trends of ecosystem loss, degradation, Met fragmentation – desired future status of ecosystems in 2050. – Indicators: multiple indicators or a composite index CBD Post 2020 Process • Benefits – ensuring that the benefits provided by biodiversity, both for planetary integrity and for meeting communities and societal needs. – Indicators: refer to SDGs? 6

  7. 2030 Goals (Proposal!) C. 2030 Goals Conservation of Species & Ecosystems • Stepping down from 2050 Sustainable • Status oriented Use • 3 Aspects: Benefit – Species & Ecosystems Sharing • Genetic Diversity is embedded – Sustainable – People benefit from the exploitation CBD Post 2020 Process of Nature 7

  8. Existing 2020 Mission Statement • “Take effective and urgent action to halt the loss of biodiversity in order to ensure that by 2020 ecosystems are resilient and continue to provide essential services, thereby securing the planet’s variety of life, and contributing to human well-being, and poverty eradication. To ensure this, pressures on biodiversity are reduced, ecosystems are restored, biological resources are sustainably used and benefits arising out of utilization of genetic resources are shared in a fair and equitable manner; adequate financial resources are provided, capacities are enhanced, biodiversity CBD Post 2020 Process issues and values mainstreamed, appropriate policies are effectively implemented, and decision-making is based on sound science and the precautionary approach.” 8

  9. Defining the 2030 Mission F. 2030 Mission • A stepping stone towards the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity. • Actions Parties must take to achieve the result that Parties want by 2030, and beyond. • Be an inspirational and motivating statement – promotes action but which is also succinct and easy to communicate implies the need for conciseness and CBD Post 2020 Process breadth • Other short-medium-long term milestones? – For example: to 2040, to map out the entire pathway to 2050 more clearly and still reinforces the need for urgent action this decade 9

  10. Mission 2030 Statement proposals • Implement solutions across society to address biodiversity loss and enhance benefits contributing to the global development agenda and, by 2030, putting the world on a path to achieve the 2050 vision. • Reduce drivers of biodiversity loss across society and put the world to sustainable path to achieve the 2050 Vision CBD Post 2020 Process • Reduce drivers of biodiversity loss across society, enhance benefit sharing and put the world to sustainable path to achieve the 2050 Vision 10
