  1. Multi Venue Exclusion (MVE): Helping Nelly Neove Christoforou Lisa Campbell Alison Penfold

  2. Nelly Nelly is a 32 year-old Maori/Samoan/Pakeha woman, recently separated from her partner. Nelly has used cannabis and alcohol from her early teens, but has started using ‘P’ over the past year. She was introduced to gambling at the same time, and enjoyed the buzz of winning while high. Her gambling escalated to the point where she used sex and on-selling P to have enough for high-stakes gambling. Her debts have become so great she has lost everything, has no place to live, no car and no job. She is desperate for change as she recently overdosed in a suicide attempt, and was found by her ex-partner who had been trying to contact her. Members of Nelly’s extended family/whanau have recently completed submissions to council on the Class 4 policy review and are volunteers at their local food bank. They have become increasingly interested in why there are so many opportunities to gamble and what can be done about it. While Nelly is aware that her family/whanau are concerned, she says she is currently AOD free, but does recognise that she is a bit ‘fragile’ .

  3. Quiz: True/False • MVE should be used on every occasion that it is asked for (by either the person who is gambling or a third party) • True for the person gambling, false for the 3 rd party • More is better! The more venues someone can be excluded from, the more successful an MVE will be • False • MVE should be issued for as long as it is possible under the regulations for the best result • False

  4. MVE Case Studies Break into 3 groups: • Further information about Nelly and her whanau has been provided on each of three extra scenarios • With this extra information how would your group use MVE to help Nelly and her whanau?

  5. Case Study 1: Nelly’s family • Nelly’s two sisters have arrived at your local problem gambling service without an appointment. One of her sisters is crying and says we have to stop her gambling – she just can’t stop herself, please help. • One of the counsellors/practitioners has had a cancellation and Nelly’s sisters are taken in to see her. • What happens next?

  6. Help for Nelly’s whanau • Where and how could Nelly’s whanau access information and support for self-exclusion or MVE? • What resources might be helpful for the whanau? • What other supports could be provided for Nelly’s whanau?

  7. Case Study 2: Nelly • Nelly makes an appointment with her local problem gambling service and comes in to meet with the counsellor/practitioner. • Nelly says that her whanau want to stop her going to to the bars in her area, and are angry with the these venues, saying that they are money-grabbing and just don’t care. Nelly says she just needs to learn how to control her gambling, and that the venue staff actually really look after her.

  8. Case Study 3: Nelly • Nelly comes to the local problem gambling service without an appointment and a counsellor/practitioner is able to see her then. • Nelly says that everything has got completely out of hand, all of her whanau are angry with her and she has just got to stop gambling. She says that someone told her that the gambling venues can be made to stop her going, and she wants every venue in Auckland to make sure that she doesn’t gamble.

  9. Help for Nelly • How could MVE help Nelly in this situation? • Is self-exclusion and MVE the right tool at the right time for Nelly?

  10. Helping Nelly and her whanau with MVE • What information would need to be discussed with Nelly if she decided to go ahead and complete the MVE request for exclusion form? • What information needs to be discussed with Nelly when completing the MVE venue identification form?

  11. What if it goes wrong?! What would you do if Nelly tells you she is breaching her exclusion, or the MVE Coordinator contacts you to let you know Nelly has been sighted at a venue where she has been excluded from? • Discuss with your client – client responsibilities and support needed • Inform your local MVE coordinator of any client breaches • MVE coordinator will liaise appropriately with all stakeholders and will keep you informed of any outcomes
