the majority of the collection is not in open access - the only way to view its content - through subject metadata search therefore, the ETH-Bibliothek applies:

  • very detailed subject indexing and
  • advanced browsing and searching functionality

Three authoritative features of the UDC are particularly useful:

  • 1. UDC's synthetic feature
  • 2. Provision for extensions
  • Alphabetical extensions
  • Local extensions = local classification
  • 3. Common auxiliaries (place, time, form, person, etc.) for each UDC number

NEBIS: detailed subject index to classification UDC classmarks => placeholders for numerous search terms in German, English and French search terms: descriptors (UDC), synonyms, technical terms, specialist jargon, popular scientific terminology, abbreviations and related/associated terms, term inversions And especially: natural language terms “chemical reactions in the atmosphere” or “convection in earth mantle” The ultimate goal is to help users find subjects with ease, irrespective of whether they use jargon or a colloquialism or search in English, German or French

Although, over the period of thirty years, the NEBIS Subject Index has evolved and today it could be easily described as a descriptor system or subject heading system - its nature remains strongly classification-oriented. NEBIS subject terms, over 64,000 of them, are all conceptually closely linked to the UDC hierarchy and to the syntactically expressive nature of its notation

UDC class 549.211 is connected with its verbal components in three languages: MARC field 150 holds the descriptors in three languages MARC field 450 keeps synonyms, plural/ singular forms, acronyms, etc. >>> its main function is to help browsing in the NEBIS-OPAC index All these fields are linked to UDC class 549.211, in MARC field 072 Its hierarchical position is described in MARC field 550, which holds the notation of the broader class, in this case 549.21

in the large collections it serves
