Mul&lingual ¡Student ¡and ¡ ¡ Faculty ¡Surveys ¡ ¡ FALL ¡2017 ¡ The ¡surveys ¡helped ¡us ¡to ¡iden&fy: ¡ • number ¡of ¡mul&lingual ¡students, ¡and ¡languages ¡ spoken ¡in ¡ECU ¡community ¡ • language ¡and ¡learning ¡challenges ¡ • strategies ¡to ¡support ¡mul&lingualism ¡in ¡the ¡ classroom ¡ • a ¡desire ¡for ¡teaching ¡support ¡& ¡pedagogical ¡change ¡

A ¡majority ¡of ¡ECU ¡students ¡were ¡ ¡ not ¡ born ¡in ¡Canada ¡ 32% ¡ have ¡lived ¡in ¡ Canada ¡less ¡ than ¡5 ¡years ¡

Mul&lingualism ¡is ¡not ¡only ¡a ¡ ¡ newcomer ¡student ¡issue ¡ Por&on ¡of ¡ ¡ mul&lingual-­‑iden&fied ¡ students ¡born ¡in ¡ Canada, ¡or ¡here ¡for ¡ over ¡10 ¡years ¡

¡ Mul&lingualism: ¡A ¡working ¡defini&on ¡ • ¡a ¡spectrum ¡of ¡language ¡fluency ¡ ¡ • ¡encompasses ¡the ¡linguis&c ¡and ¡cultural ¡ experience ¡of ¡living ¡between ¡mul&ple ¡ languages ¡ ¡ • ¡also ¡affects ¡students ¡born ¡in ¡Canada ¡in ¡ mul&lingual ¡contexts, ¡such ¡as ¡immigrant ¡or ¡ First ¡Na&ons ¡communi&es. ¡

The ¡overwhelming ¡sen&ment ¡among ¡ students ¡and ¡faculty ¡is ¡that ¡mul&lingualism ¡ is ¡an ¡advantage ¡to ¡learning ¡at ¡ECU. ¡

Understanding ¡the ¡mul&lingual ¡reality ¡of ¡the ¡ majority ¡of ¡our ¡students ¡could ¡help ¡us ¡to ¡build ¡a ¡ more ¡student-­‑focused ¡curriculum. ¡

Class ¡discussions ¡are ¡especially ¡challenging ¡for ¡ mul&lingual ¡students ¡who ¡are ¡ac&vely ¡transla&ng ¡ between ¡languages ¡ ¡

Faculty ¡strategies ¡to ¡deal ¡with ¡large ¡class ¡ discussions ¡(reported ¡in ¡the ¡survey): ¡ • Time ¡to ¡reflect ¡and ¡write ¡down ¡ideas ¡before ¡larger ¡ class ¡discussion ¡ • Wri&ng ¡discussion ¡ques&on ¡on ¡the ¡board ¡to ¡support ¡ understanding ¡ • Smaller ¡group ¡discussion ¡before ¡the ¡larger ¡one; ¡or ¡ replace ¡altogether ¡with ¡only ¡small ¡group ¡discussions ¡ • Online ¡forums ¡to ¡con&nue ¡the ¡class ¡discussion ¡

Our ¡Goals ¡ We ¡are ¡looking ¡at ¡ways ¡to ¡beaer ¡support ¡ mul&lingualism ¡on ¡our ¡campus ¡through: ¡ • Researching ¡ways ¡to ¡support ¡teaching ¡and ¡learning ¡in ¡a ¡ mul&lingual ¡environment ¡ • Developing ¡a ¡support ¡infrastructure ¡for ¡students ¡facing ¡ challenges ¡unique ¡to ¡mul&lingualism ¡ • Raising ¡awareness ¡of ¡mul&lingualism ¡at ¡ECUAD ¡ (discussions, ¡forums, ¡student-­‑led ¡events, ¡exhibi&ons) ¡ • Building ¡community ¡on ¡this ¡issue ¡through ¡educa&onal ¡ and ¡social ¡events. ¡
