Intent of Study

  • This study is an analysis of capacity vs projected enrollment
  • nly and includes Early Education through 12th grade.
  • It does not include the MISD Administration building or other

programs located at off campus locations (bus barn, etc).

  • MISD may want to pursue a more comprehensive study to

include all ISD programs and facilities in order to make sure the best solution is considered / implemented.

  • MISD may have the option to divest or re-purpose existing facilities

as they become costly to maintain and/or the program is better located at a different facility.

  • MISD will need to develop an interim/short-term plan to

accommodate the needs prior to new facilities opening.

MISD Facility Visioning Questions

  • General Questions:
  • What is the “classroom of the future” for each school (elementary, intermediate, middle,

high)?

  • What are some characteristics that would maximize the student experience and potential?
  • What are some characteristics that would diminish the student experience and potential?
  • What facilities/campuses need improvements regardless of enrollment / capacity issues?
  • Is there a desire to maintain an enrollment maximum cap at each campus?
  • What is the condition and long range plan of the off-campus building(s)?
  • Is there value to relocating MISD Administration on one of the campuses?
  • What other programs are located off-campus (Special Education at Bus Barn, other?)
slide-5
SLIDE 5

MISD Facility Visioning Questions

  • HME
  • Did the original plan of HME have a “future expansion phase” already designed?
  • Is the design of HME something that should be copied for future elementary schools?
  • How does HME’s classrooms/layout compare to the “classroom of the future” for elementary

school grades?

  • MRI & MMS
  • What is the condition of the infrastructure of the MRI & MMS buildings?
  • What are the deferred maintenance issues with the campus?
  • How does MRI and MMS’s classrooms/layout compare to the “classroom of the future” for

intermediate/middle school grades?

  • MHS
  • Did the original plan of MHS have a “future expansion phase” already designed?
  • How does MHS’s classrooms/layout compare to the “classroom of the future” for high school

grades? How does it compare to middle school grades?

Overall MISD Enrollment / Capacity

  • According to the capacity and

enrollment data received, MISD has approximately 620 desks vacant (excess capacity) in 2015

  • By 2020, MISD will be short 613 desks

for students

  • By 2025, MISD will be short 2,203 desks

for students

+620 (613) (2,203)

Campus Improvement Concepts

  • The following improvement concepts are for discussion purposes only.
  • These concept sketches are not recommendations, each campus needs to be

further studied including but not limited to the following:

  • Utility locations and capacities;
  • Engineering / infrastructure condition;
  • Building/architecture condition;
  • Hazardous material inspection (asbestos, etc);
  • Review of existing layout;
  • Other campus specific needs; and
  • Long-term vision of each campus.
slide-14
SLIDE 14

HME Concept for Discussion

  • Campus Improvement Ideas:
  • HME has a natural expansion zone to the north
  • f the existing 3rd grade hallway, across from the

gym.

  • This expansion zone would likely max-out the

campus as the support areas (cafeteria, gym, etc) will begin to be undersized.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

MRI & MMS Concepts for Discussion

  • Campus Improvement Ideas:
  • Expansion needs will need to be defined and

further investigation required to determine the appropriate size, location of any recommended activity on the existing campus

  • Potential additions between Competition Gym

and MRI and MMS

  • Consolidated Main Entrance for both MRI and

MMS from Cardinal Drive

  • Concept should be further developed once a

long-range vision for the campus is defined (ie. MRI/MMS campus will be utilized as a 5th and 6th grade campus).

  • Potential program of expansion zone (shown as

red and tan buildings on diagrams)

  • New Lobby
  • On Site Campus Security
  • Cameras
  • Lockers
  • Library
  • Music Department
  • Internal connectivity of campus
  • Improved playgrounds (shown as basketball

courts)

  • Potential additional classrooms
  • Special Education
  • Opportunities to bring off-campus programs to

campus
