  • Surveys repeatedly show that employers are dissatisfied with the

literacy and numeracy skills of school and college leavers, and many use these qualifications as a filter in their recruitment processes.

  • For young people leaving education without a good level of

English and Maths, their chances of finding employment are lower, they are likely to earn less, and they have limited

  • pportunities for progression into further education and training.

Why English and Maths are important

slide-6
SLIDE 6
  • Nearly all Level 3 courses list C in English as a requirement.
  • The majority of university courses look for at least Cs in GCSE English, Maths

and perhaps Science. Some university courses go further and ask for specific subjects at GCSE, with certain grades.

  • A management degree at the University of Leeds, for example, specifies that

you must have at least Bs in English Language and Maths while a Psychology degree at the University of Bristol asks for ‘Maths, English and Science at grade B, but grade A preferred
