MarcEdit! Quick Demo @ LACUNY Cataloging Roundtable Yoko Inagi Ferguson Chief of Cataloging @ The City College May 6, 2016
What is MarcEdit?
“MarcEdit is a free windows based MARC editing tool that provides methods for converting MARC to text, Text to MARC, MARC to XML and MARC to Dublin Core.” Created in 1999 & maintained by Terry Reese .
Will go over how to: ● Merge files (MarcJoin) ● Split files (MarcSplit) ● Convert mrc to mrk (& back to mrc) (MarcBreaker) ● Add/remove fields & subfields ● Count fields & identify problems ● Submit a batch upload request to OLS
A few things to remember Review Batch Load Request form via Support @ OLS! ● A file should include more than 50 and fewer than 20,000 records ● 1 file per request ● [946] $a OWN code + unique collection identifier ● Create a separate [946] $a nbl ● [856] $z Access for XXXX users ● [856] $x proxy ● Upload .mrc file.
MarcTool ● Merge files ( MarcJoin ) ○ Destination → name a new file ○ File(s) to → select files you want to merge ● Split files ( MarcSplit ) ○ Source file → select a file you want to split ○ Destination folder → name a new folder where split files will reside ○ Records per file → decide how many records each file should have
MarcBreaker ● Convert mrc to mrk to edit a file. ● Translate to UTF8 (for diacritic) Note: ● The original mrc file will be saved separately, so even if you make mistakes in the mrk file, you can always start over
Edit records ● Reports/field count ○ [006] , [007] (too low?) ○ [856] (too low? too many?) ○ [300] , [260] / [264] ● Add/remove fields ○ [946] $a##springer2016 ○ [946] $anbl ○ [6xx] _4, _5, _6, _7 ● Add subfields ○ [856] $z Access for ####### users. ○ [856] $x proxy ● Compile File into MARC ( Convert mrk back to mrc )
Records w/ problems ● [006] too low ○ “Add field only if not present” (ex. m\\\\\o\\d\\\\\\\\) ● [007] too low ○ “Add field only if not present” (ex. cr\cn|||||||||) ○ [007] repeatable, can be more than the total # of records ● [856] too many or too low ○ Use the “Find All” feature & excel sheet to locate records with multiple [856]s or missing the [856]
