  1. DAHR to MARC: Leveraging Existing Discographic David Seubert, UCSB Data to Expedite Jennifer Vaughn, SU/RFERL MOUG, Portland OR Cataloging 31 January, 2018 MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  2. History of DAHR Begun in 1966 as the Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings (EDVR) by private collectors Ted Fagan and William R. Moran ● Originally documented recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company from original documents in the Victor (now Sony) Archives ● Moved to UCSB in the 2003, became an online database in 2008 ● Added streaming audio in collaboration with the Library of Congress in 2011 ● Became American Discography Project (ADP) in 2013, expanding to other labels by incorporating data from published discographies. Data licensed from publishers keyed into DAHR database format and enhanced by ADP editors ● Added MARC Records in 2017 MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  3. Current scope of DAHR ● Discography of master recordings made by 5 (soon 6) American record labels ○ Berliner, Victor, Columbia, Zonophone, Okeh (soon Decca) ○ Includes recordings from 1892 through 1941 (soon 1971, with Decca) ○ 172,000 masters (soon 246,000 with Decca) ○ Representing 125,000+ disc recordings (soon 160,000 with Decca) ○ 35,000+ names in database, 25,000+ are from LCNAF ○ Over 6.5 million data points in database ● Authoritative data from original documents ○ Sources include recording ledgers, company card files, trade catalogs, disc labels (but not everything always) ○ Caveat: catalog of events, not objects (but data is substantially the same for both) ● Prismatic view ○ Matrix/Title, Talent (Names), Objects (Discs), Dates MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  4. Why DAHR to MARC (DtM) Tool? ● DAHR already contains nearly all data used in a MARC catalog record, just not in one place or in in the right syntax. People have been cutting and pasting DAHR data into catalog records for years ● DAHR has used LC name authorities (under the hood) since 2005, so much of the research part of cataloging has been done by UCSB editors already ● DAHR was always conceptualized as a potential cataloging tool ● There is now a critical mass of content to make the programming the DtM tool possible and economical ● There is a need for more cataloging of 78 rpm discs. Most collections are still under-described and not properly staffed MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  5. Development of DtM and how it works ● Wanted tool to leverage our existing data to integrate cataloging more closely into our other functions at UCSB (discography and digitization). Also wanted to share cataloging with other libraries ● Worked with UCSB cataloger Dain Lopez to create business rules for single sided discs and with DAHR programmer Michael Lashutka to program rules ● Data elements in DAHR are mapped to MARC and data is made (mostly) RDA compliant ● Single sided tool was released in Sep 2017 and Jennifer Vaughn at Syracuse volunteered to beta test and double sided development started ● Double sided tool added in Nov 2017 and tool announced publicly MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  12. Features and advantages of DtM tool ● RDA compliant MARC records ● Cataloger or technician can cut and paste MARC directly into OCLC Connexion client from DAHR website ● Names already contain LCNAF strings to control without editing ● Can double cataloging productivity Disadvantages ● Each record still needs to be hand edited from copy in hand (particularly titles) ● No subject headings MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018

  18. Use in Digital Projects at UCSB ● Program goal is to have every disc that is brought in to be cataloged and digitized as part of the same process ● New “Lightweight Data Entry” process facilitates this ○ Entry created from DAHR ○ Catalog record exported ○ Disc sent to lab for digitization MOUG, Portland OR, 31 January, 2018
