  2. Conventional light sources vs. LED Light for the future? 2

  3. Inorganic LEDs and Retrofits LED T8 replacements may contain dozens of high power LEDs or hundreds of 5 mm SMD- LED‘s behind a clear or frosted lens, all in a bi- pin T8 lamp package. 3

  4. OLED (organic light emitting diode) 4

  5. LED Lighting for Hazardous Area Zone1 Zone 1 Div 2 & zone 2 Div 1 & zone 1 Div 2 & zone 2 Plant lighting Handlamps / torches Plant lighting Plant lighting Flood light But what about Linear LED ?? Div2 obstruction lighting Zone1 & Div2 Exit lighting Zone1 & Div2 Signalling 5

  6. Linear LED Retrofits At present linear LED solutions are mainly offered for non-hazardous applications. Widely known and offered are LED tubes as retrofit for existing fluorescent lamps very few with LED modules or LED stripes Both systems still do not offer light output levels equiv. to T8 fluorescent lamps. 6

  7. Linear LED Retrofits On the market there are many suppliers of LED tubes who want to replace T8 fluorescent lamps: LGN BS Ledlight Trophies Off Stage LED Lighting LedLight Europe LED Line Type Consumption Lumen output Lm/W T8 TL-D 36W 36 W 3350 93 LED tube Type A 15 W 975 65 LED tube Type B 9 W 700 77 LED tube Type C 25 W 2000 80 7

  8. Linear LED in hazardous area light fittings Points to observe for hazardous environment: Type of protection Temperature Blinding/glare Component life time/reliability Light output Light distribution /directionality Energy saving 8

  9. Linear LED in hazardous area light fittings LED retrofit tubes in light fittings of increased safety type Ex-e require an approved type of protection acc. IEC/EN ex-standards. Thus they require to be operated with components that do not spark, arc or create heat above T-ratings. LED´s are semi conductors and can only be operated in an Ex d - flameproof enclosure – without special protection. For use in Ex e light fittings a suitable type of protection has to be selected. Visible Light Heat 9

  10. Linear LED in hazardous area light fittings Temperature plays a vital role in explosion protection but also has a large influence on the life time of any LED. Why is temperature so critical? Lumen output is reduced as junction temperature increase. 5% reduction in light output for every 20º C increase Life-time dependant on junction temperature Varies by manufacturer and thermal resistance is crucial in selection process 90 ° -140 ° viewing angle (light) (light) (heat) 10

  11. Linear LED in hazardous area light fittings Blinding effect of LED dots 650 lm 1000 lm Equivalent lumen is distributed on LED on a fraction of the surface of a conventional light source 11

  12. Linear LED in hazardous area light fittings Light is not only important for safety but also for human wellness A light density > 30k cd/m² is inconvenient = disability glare Fluorescent tubes T8: 10..15k cd/m² T5: 15..35k cd/m² Incandescent bulb (100 W) : ~25k cd/m² LED Fortimo 2000: ~700k cd/m² (LLM 225k cd/m²) ~1…6.000k cd/m² Chip 1 W: ~3…6.000k cd/m² Arrays 10 W: Typical solution would be a diffuser or frosted glass: => >50% loss of light output and change of light distribution curve. ´ 12

  14. eLLK 92 LED linear / LED module Considering the b. m. details of the New Linear LED light fitting are based on the well-known, well proven eLLK 92 series  Heart piece is the LED Module replacing two 18 W or two 36 W fluorescent tubes  Includes optimized temperature management for excellent life time and reliability 14

  15. eLLK 92 LED linear / Light technology Learned from automobile industry (head light): Indirect Light output => LED via reflector  Prevent blinding effect of LED dots  > 70% efficiency of light  no multi shadowing 15

  16. eLLK 92 LED linear / Light technology  Usable light output comparable with 18W fluorescent lamps  Optimization of light distribution in range +/-45°. 2x tubesT8 LED module 16
