Kelly Road Elementary, a two-room school, opened in September 1957 on Kelly Road near the Hart Highway. A former sawmill site, the road and school were named for John Kelly, a land surveyor, timber buyer and jeweler, recognized for the Kelly Cup men's curling tournament and the Northern BC Exhibition. In 1960, a portable was moved alongside the school, and named Kelly Road Elementary Junior High School. The school name changed in 1962 to become Kelly Road Elementary Junior Secondary School. June 1967 saw the close of the elementary school as students attended the new Austin Road School. Construction began on an expansion in 1964 and progressed into 1967. The original building was called the Annex and would house overflow students from the growing area from 1968-72. A suspicious fire destroyed part of the Annex in 1979. The site of the original school was demolished, and paved over for parking and outdoor sports courts. In 1975-76, grade 11 and 12 were added--completing the transition to a secondary school, now located on Handlen Road. The first graduates were in May of 1977 after two years of shift-schooling with Duchess Park (at the time called PGSS). 1993-4 brought a block of six new classrooms, an office area, computer, art, special education and band room upgrades. September 1994 added five portables to accommodate the expanding population of students, and Heather Park Middle School was built in 2000, leaving Kelly Road with grades 9-12. In 2010, grade 8 students were back at KRSS as enrollment in the district declined. In 2017, the provincial government gave SD57 $44.3 million for a replacement school. It will hold 900 students and be built to L.E.E.D. gold standards, opening in September 2020.

The area now known as the Hart Highway was, at one time, a populous grizzly bear habitat. Lheidli T'enneh ancestors hunted grizzly bears in this area to sustain families, Elders and community. Shas Ti means 'grizzly bear trail' or 'path.' '"I remember vividly as a young girl, my father telling us stories of his hunting journey...and how the berries and vegetation attracted bears, including grizzlies," said Stewart. "He would tell about how grizzlies would roam through what is now the Hart Highlands and UNBC looking for food and berries to withstand the winter."'* 'As [Dayi (Chief)] Pountney points out, there are two histories in that
and there is a newer history...so we're trying to find a way to collaborate to put them both together,"'**
