  1. Is there available IPv4 space in the LAC region? Sergio Rojas sergio@lacnic.net

  2. IPv4 • IPv4 space 4.294.967.296 IP addresses (not all of them are usable) • It seems a lot of space, right? • But the world population is almost 7 billion people • 87% use cell phone and 35% use Internet • There are people who use more than one IP • They don’t seem so much anymore, right?

  3. Growth of connected devices and users

  4. • Internet emerged as a network of universities • whos was going to think that 4 billion IP would not enough?

  5. HOW INTERNET NUMBER RESOURCES ARE DISTRIBUITED?

  6. Regional Internet Registry (RIRs)

  7. Internet Number Resources Distribution IANA AFRINIC APNIC ARIN LACNIC RIPE IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) End actualmente bajo la responsabilidad de ICANN ISP ( Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Users Numbers ) End End Users Users

  8. IPv4 Exhaustion Period Phase 2 Started June 10, 2014 /10 where reserved for this period. Additional allocation every 6 months Phase 3 Started February 15, 2017 Almost 5Millon IPs /10 + Available space is unly for new entrance Before exhaustion period: Allocation base on need Now: maximum allocation /22, mínimum /24

  9. HOW TO PROCEED?

  10. Three possible options • Carrier grade NAT / Large scale NAT • IPv4 market transfer • Deploy IPv6

  11. Network Address Translation (NAT) • Allow multiple devices sharing Internet connection with just one public IP. • It is not a sustainable solution.

  12. IPv4 market transfer • Policy 2.3.2.18 allow organizations to transfer IPv4 ranges without a merge / acquisition process. http://www.lacnic.net/en/web/lacnic/transferencia

  13. What are ISPs doing in LAC? • Most of ISPs are using CGNAT – Mobile network – Residential user (xDSL+HFC) – When customers complain they allocate them public IP. • Corporate customers usually receive public IP.

  14. Status of Phase 3 IPv4 reserved for the Phase 3: 4986368 • IPv4 allocated in this phase: 986112 • IPv4 available in this block: 4000256 • http://www.lacnic.net/en/web/lacnic/agotamiento-ipv4

  15. How to request an IPv4 block to LACNIC? Requirements Be legally established within the region and use the o resources in LACNIC's coverage area. Prove utilization or immediate necessity of 25% of the o requested space. Submit a detailed one-year plan of 50%. o Submit your application http://request.lacnic.net
