  • Sport England have traditionally been the biggest investor

in grassroots sports.

  • In 2016 their focus changed and is now about tackling

inactivity, and encouraging inactive people to become active.

  • A wider range of partners are now being funded to

achieve this, including the private sector and charities.

  • Generally speaking, Sport England no longer objectivises

National Governing Bodies to deliver large increases in participation.

  • Instead, their requirement of NGBs is now to ‘create

resilience in their core market’ - ie. to retain their existing participants and keep them active in their sports.

Sport England’s new direction

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Sport England require their investment in British Rowing to focus on the following:

  • Strengthening resilience in the Core Market by supporting these people to keep playing their sport,

specifically through…

  • Development of new competitions and event formats.
  • Continued coach and official education and training.
  • Development of an online system to support clubs in managing their members and membership.
  • Creation of a comprehensive suite of self-help content to support club volunteers and

administrators.

  • Supporting talented athletes and their progress through the England Talent Pathway.
  • Ensuring Children and Young People are able to enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity,

specifically through the continuation of the Henley Stewards Charitable Trust Coach programme.

  • Recruiting people from the Mass Market and helping them build a regular habit by developing an indoor

rowing programme, delivered through commercial gyms and rowing clubs.

New community support model

Self-help Assisted Bespoke Active Support Passive Support Rowing Community

Changes to our funding meant rethinking our approach to community support. Going forward, we would: 1. Centralise our community support team. 2. Create a new knowledge base of self-help content to support club administrators. 3. Provide a new online service to improve and streamline the process of clubs managing their members.

Benefits to clubs

ClubHub will… Save clubs time ClubHub will reduce the time clubs spend signing up, renewing and managing members by allowing members to do all this themselves, online. No more forms to be processed, emails to keep track of, spreadsheets to keep up to date

  • r people to chase. ClubHub will simplify and automate as many of these membership-related processes as possible,

with all personal data centralised and stored, safe and secure,in ClubHub's cloud based system. Streamline clubs’ financial processes ClubHub will provide clubs with a facility to move their club payments online. This could cover everything from membership and race entry fees to boat racking and training camp charges. No more storing cash in the clubhouse, banking cheques and checking statements, just secure online payments into a club’s account.

Benefits to clubs

ClubHub will… Provide easy access to club insights ClubHub will give clubs at-a-glance updates on their current membership levels, finance situation and more. As well as being instantly informative, over time these will let clubs track growth and identify trends and issues, and help them to be more efficient in the running of their club. Help clubs communicate with members ClubHub will capture all club members’ contact information and generate up to date mailing lists. No more separate lists to keep up to date, and less of a risk of them being shared with the wrong people. ClubHub will also help to easily identify specific groups or squads within clubs’ members, and provide them with the facility to create and send professional-looking targeted emails or club-wide communications.

Benefits to clubs

ClubHub will… Help clubs comply with new data regulations

The government’s new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into force in May 2018. All clubs that maintain personal data on their members will need to comply with GDPR - with potentially heavy fines for those that don’t. ClubHub will give clubs the security of knowing their members’ personal and payment information is safe and secure, and allow British Rowing to provide guidance to clubs on how to comply with GDPR in the context of their use of this system.

Provide up-to-date business knowledge and best practice ClubHub will provide administrators with all the knowledge they need to run their clubs as a successful small business, with content accessible 24/7. This will include expert advice on employment, tax, facilities management, tenure, and health and safety, right through to volunteer and community engagement and marketing. Whatever guidance clubs need, British Rowing will look to create it, for the benefit of all affiliated clubs.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

ClubHub pilots

  • 1. Discovery phase

We work with clubs to understand more about them and their requirements, including the following:

  • How their club works, and who manages the processes that support the running of the club and its

members.

  • How they currently store their club’s membership data (eg. through an existing system, on a spreadsheet,

etc.), and the processes they use to update this.

  • How the club structures its membership, the different tiers of membership they offer, and how and when

they take payment from members.

  • How and how often they currently communicate with your club members.
  • What data they use, or would like to have available, to keep them up to date with the status and health of

their club and its finances.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

ClubHub pilots

  • 2. Roll-out phase
  • We give clubs access to the ClubHub online system and work alongside them to set it up for their clubs.
  • May include migrating their existing membership database into the new ClubHub system, or building a

new database from scratch

  • Helps us refine the user experience and ensure it’s as intuitive and user-friendly as possible
  • Also helps create training documents and develop or plans to roll ClubHub out to the wider rowing

community.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

ClubHub pilots

  • 3. Advocacy phase
  • Based on their experiences of clubs so far, we start sharing their opinions with the wider rowing community
