What is the Princeton Plan?

“The Princeton Plan eliminates the use of geographic district lines to assign students to schools and instead puts all same-age kids

  • together. The result is more balanced groups that have to

physically change schools more often. For example, a child goes to one school building for K-1, then another for grades 2-3, and another for 4-5.”

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Patchogue-Medford’s “Princeton Plan”- The Patchogue Medford Plan for Personalized Education

  • Not a traditional Princeton Plan.
  • Does not eliminate the use of geographic lines.
  • Enhances current lines.
  • Students will only have to transition one more time.
  • K-5 -> K-2, 3-5.
  • Many students will also remain in their current home school for

3 years.

Mission: Solve the Structural Roadblocks for:

  • I. Class Size
  • II. Special Education Programs
  • III. Traveling Teachers
  • IV. Bilingual Programs
slide-7
SLIDE 7

I - Class Size

  • Class sizes would be much more equitable across schools.
  • Depending on the grade, elementary classes would

average 21, 22, or 23 students, instead of having ranges from 18-28 students.

  • Middle schools enrollment would be equitable.

PM Plan for Personalized Education: Equity in class sizes in the entire district.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

II – Special Education Programs

  • Students currently displaced due to program restrictions.
  • Examples:
  • All MS self-contained students attend Saxton.
  • Elementary inclusion offered only at River, Barton, Eagle.
  • Elementary self-contained offered only at River, Tremont, Canaan.
  • At many schools, special education classes cannot be mixed – if it

would be best for a self-contained student to take an inclusion class. PM Plan for Personalized Education: Students would be able to stay in their new ly designated home school and receive the proper services.

SLIDE 9

III – Traveling Teachers

Middle Schools Elementary Schools

  • South Ocean – 28%
  • Range from 10-26%
  • Saxton – 33.8%
  • Oregon – 33.3%

PM Plan for Personalized Education: The need for traveling teachers would be greatly reduced in the middle and elementary schools.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

IV – English as a New Language (ENL) & Bilingual Programs

  • Dual Language offered to all Spanish-native speakers – some travel to other schools.
  • Dual Language offered to only English-native speakers in 3/7 elementary schools.
  • ENL – Interrupted Learners – aren’t being provided services – condensation of middle

schools would allow this (Oregon – 4, South Ocean – 5, Saxton – 6).

  • With more full-time employees, our ENL students receive more comprehensive services.
  • For the vast majority of students, foreign language is not available until 7th grade in

middle school – and in some cases not until high school.

  • At the conclusion of 6th grade, high school credit is available for students in the bilingual

program.

PM Plan for Personalized Education: Students would be able to stay in their new ly designated home school and receive the proper services – and English speaking students can take dual language. Foreign language

  • ption begins in Kindergarten.

Items for Consideration

  • Under a typical Princeton plan, there
  • Under our plan, MOST students would remain in

are many displaced students. their home school for 3 years.

  • Under a typical Princeton plan,
  • Under our plan, there is only 1 additional

numerous transitions are added.

  • transition. We have also thought of ways to ease

the transition – looping of administrators and

  • Sibling Separation.

support staff.

  • Calendar of events – PTA, concerts,

Meet the Teacher night.

  • Bell Schedule
  • Extra-curricular & sports at middle
