Imagine ¡that ¡you ¡have ¡a ¡problem, ¡a ¡camera, ¡and ¡an ¡image ¡analysis ¡ algorithm ¡that ¡will ¡solve ¡the ¡problem ¡for ¡you. However, ¡the ¡analysis algorithm ¡is ¡computationally ¡expensive, ¡and ¡not ¡all ¡ data ¡contains ¡valuable ¡information. Given ¡limited ¡resources, ¡or ¡if ¡real-‑time ¡decisions ¡are ¡needed, ¡we ¡want ¡to ¡find ¡and ¡ prioritize ¡the ¡data ¡that ¡is ¡most ¡likely ¡to ¡help ¡us ¡solve ¡our ¡problem,to ¡reduce ¡costs. 1
Now, ¡imaging ¡that ¡the ¡problem ¡is ¡a ¡patient ¡for ¡which ¡no ¡current ¡cure ¡is ¡available. 2
Our ¡collaboration ¡partners ¡are ¡developing ¡a ¡new ¡type ¡of ¡drugs, ¡where ¡tiny ¡vesicles ¡ containing ¡the ¡‘blueprint’, ¡or ¡genetic ¡code, ¡for ¡a ¡drug ¡are ¡explored. ¡If ¡designed ¡ correctly, ¡the ¡vesicles ¡are ¡absorbed ¡by ¡the ¡cells, ¡and ¡the ¡drug ¡is ¡produced ¡inside ¡the ¡ patient. ¡ 3
Many ¡different ¡parameters ¡influence ¡the ¡transportation ¡of ¡uptake ¡of ¡the ¡vesicles, ¡and ¡ to ¡optimize ¡the ¡vesicle ¡design, ¡different ¡designs ¡of ¡vesicles ¡are ¡put ¡in ¡micro ¡wells ¡ together ¡with ¡cells. ¡We ¡image ¡the ¡cells ¡over ¡time, ¡and ¡use ¡image ¡analysis ¡to ¡ understand ¡the ¡production ¡of ¡the ¡drug, ¡here ¡represented ¡by ¡green ¡fluorescence. ¡ These ¡six ¡movies ¡represent ¡data ¡from ¡six ¡wells ¡in ¡a ¡plate ¡containing ¡384 ¡wells, ¡and ¡ our ¡robotic ¡imaging ¡system ¡can ¡handle ¡24 ¡times ¡9 ¡such ¡plates ¡in ¡parallel. ¡Now, ¡I ¡hope ¡ you ¡understand ¡that ¡we ¡need ¡to ¡be ¡smart ¡about ¡how ¡we ¡use ¡our ¡computational ¡ resources ¡to ¡prioritize ¡the ¡data ¡most ¡likely ¡to ¡contain ¡scientifically ¡relevant ¡ information. ¡ 4
By ¡comparably ¡simple ¡measurements ¡we ¡can ¡stream ¡collected ¡data ¡either ¡to ¡cheap ¡ storage ¡or ¡to ¡more ¡and ¡more ¡advanced ¡computational ¡hierarchies, ¡prioritizing ¡the ¡ data ¡that ¡is ¡most ¡likely ¡to ¡be ¡of ¡scientific ¡value. ¡ 5
Many data ¡streaming ¡tools ¡available ¡today ¡were ¡designed ¡to ¡be ¡flexible ¡to ¡varying sizes ¡of ¡information ¡carriers, ¡like ¡tweets ¡ forming ¡this ¡string ¡of ¡mixed ¡sized ¡pearls. ¡ We ¡focus ¡on ¡scientific ¡data, ¡where ¡the ¡size ¡per ¡bundle ¡(or ¡pearl) ¡is ¡well ¡known. ¡This ¡ means ¡that ¡we ¡can ¡be ¡smart ¡about ¡how ¡we ¡stream, ¡assign ¡features, ¡and ¡rank ¡data. 6
A hierarchical ¡approach ¡is ¡necessary ¡for ¡many ¡types ¡of ¡scientific ¡data. ¡Finding ¡a ¡90nm ¡ virus ¡on ¡an ¡3mm ¡electron ¡microscopy ¡grid ¡is ¡about ¡as ¡hard ¡as ¡finding ¡a ¡dog ¡in ¡the ¡ greater ¡Stockholm ¡region. ¡You ¡need ¡to ¡be ¡smart ¡about ¡where ¡you ¡search! 7
Working ¡with ¡tissue samples, ¡and ¡spatially ¡resolved ¡transcriptomics, ¡we ¡face ¡the ¡ same ¡issues, ¡and ¡need ¡to ¡prioritize ¡data. 8
Within ¡this SSF-‑funded project ¡on ¡Hierarchical ¡Analysis ¡of ¡Spatial ¡and ¡TEmporal data,HASTE, ¡we ¡mix ¡competences ¡ of ¡image ¡analysis, ¡conformal ¡prediction ¡and ¡cloud ¡ computing, ¡to ¡get ¡the ¡most ¡out ¡of ¡all ¡these ¡beautiful ¡images.
