What Is Blood Pressure?

• Pressure exerted on the walls of the artery as blood is pumped through the body
• Produced primarily by contraction of the left ventricle

How Is Blood Pressure Measured?

• Recorded as two numbers:

○ Systolic ○ Diastolic

• Systolic:

○ Pressure within the arteries when the heart beats ○ Top number, higher of the two

• Diastolic:

○ Pressure in arteries between heart beats when the heart is resting ○ The bottom number

What is Hypertension?

• Normal blood pressure: less than 120/80
• Prehypertension: 120-139/80-89
• Hypertension (stage 1): 140-159/90-99
• Hypertension (stage 2): 160/100 or higher

Causes of Hypertension

• Being overweight or obese
• Lack of exercise
• Genetics
• Stress
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Salt
• OLD AGE

Treatments

• Healthier diet/ less salt
• Exercise regularly
• Medication
• Stress management
